I'd think they'd have a best available player in mind. We traded for needs really well this year, taking the best available at our pick is probably a good place to start, but I don't think the club has called out any type of player we might need but happy to be corrected on that.

If we end up getting someone who plays in a position we already have cover in it's not a big deal. The reality is that not every top draftee is a freak like Smith and can play a full season after a half a preseason, which is why I wouldn't be too worried if we picked up Gould. Such is the profile of our list that anyone we pick can pretty much develop in the twos and not have a great deal of pressure placed on them to immediately step up. But, if they do step up then it's a bonus and we worry about having a glut of players who are talented at the end of next year and the year after.

Exciting times, I don't see how our list couldn't be considered as one of the most promising for 2020.

I watched his vid and immediately thought of Daniel Rich, who was considered ready made and as such slipped to Brisbane's pick when all thought he'd go to Freo (Hill was taken instead) a few picks earlier.

If we end up with a player who can use it well and play multiple roles in defence, but not be as prolific as he was in the juniors then I don't think it's a bad result for a pick in the mid teens. Apart from a couple of examples Gould actually seems to get the footy and pick out a quick option by foot and hit a target with really quick thinking and decisiveness, which eases my mind when it comes to his combine testing results. He also seems to hit the ball and use it at his top pace which is a good trait for a player of his type.

I just think that the available evidence of what can do versus what he might not be able to do is positively skewed.

        ESPN Phantom Draft picks 1-40

With the free agency and trade periods over, attention now turns to the draft. Chris Doerre has analysed all the possibilities to expand his phantom draft into the first two rounds.

Kemp is the one I'm keen on.

I don't mind the sound of Sharp either - we don't have too many skinny, tall outside players anymore - is he allergic to winning the ball or receiving possession in congestion?

mJP - what's your take on Rivers?
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

I'm a firm no for Sharp and Rivers. When you play selfish footy you are a selfish footballer.

                Re: 2019 Draft Watch

From the Roar as of yesterday. Here

Pick 14 – Western Bulldogs – Fisher McAsey
                195cm, 86kg
The Dogs made significant effort to address their key position shortcomings in the trade period by adding Alex Keath and Josh Bruce, but could also have an opportunity to add to those stocks in the draft.
McAsey is the best genuine key position player in the draft, a tall defender who has also shown the ability to go forward.

We may not get a chance to choose BT as they could well be gone before our 1st pick.

I'd be happy with either player but if forced to choose would go with Gould. He's a big powerful lad with good acceleration which helps him burst through packs and shrug off opponents. He charges forward with purpose. Just give him a horse and a flag and he will lead the charge from the back half for you! He's a terrific kick as well. Weightman has a lot of what many would see as a need in that he is a small forward who can kick goals, is creative can tackle and is a clever user of the ball. I like how he roves around stoppages close to goal. He looks to take it on the move rather than flat footed.

Gould also looks to have leadership qualities on field. He seems to want/demand the ball and uses his physicality to advantage. There is lots of talk about his weight/height ratio being an issue and fair enough I suppose. It was mentioned he blew out to 108kg. I'm surprised if that is the case but in any case he is a kid with a strong physique in the upper body. Built more like a rugby league player I suppose. If he has good discipline towards his diet and training he will be a gun.

In terms of list management here is some food for thought

Weightman/Small Forward - at the moment the Dogs have Dickson & Lloyd who are near the end of their careers, the untried Cavarra and West as our main options. The latter 2 have shown capability at VFL level in the role but not at senior level as yet but I think both have the ability. Weightman might need a little time to be ready for AFL footy but like West did in 2019 he could play a few games in 2020 in our set up. With our big forward set up we will need little blokes running off them who can hit the scoreboard.

Gould/General defender - would most likely slot in as a 3rd tall. I wouldn't want to see him used as a lock down defender, I think Bevo would like his connections from the back. Whilst we've added Keath to our KD stocks we have lost Morris and may lose Roberts & Gardner from the list soon we will need an extra big man. Further we also have other defenders like Wood, Duryea and Suckling in the veteran years. Gould could play round 1.

                      Re: 2019 Draft Watch

Draft watchers seem to think the Demons will target a 'need' at pick 8 and take Weightman.

I'm happy to just take the best available. We're stacked for back half talent but if that's Gould, so be it. Player comparison discussion tends to compare him to Shannon Hurn more than any KPD. Huge body who kicks well.

We should target a need with later picks though (we may only have one live one). Quick small forward if we don't get one at the pointy end.

The two players that catch my eye are Dylan Stephens and Deven Robertson but there another 4 or so I'd happily consider

It's a very even draft in terms of talent. Picks in the top 25 could all be productive players

For no particular reason here are previous years' pick 13:

                          2018: Isaac Quaynor
                          2017: Jarrad Brander
                          2016: Daniel Venables
                          2015: Matthew Kennedy
                          2014: Lachie Weller
                          2013: Patrick Cripps
                          2012: Jesse Lonergan
                          2011: Taylor Adams

And Pick 14, as there will probably be a Green bid before us:

                          2018: Jackson Hately
                          2017: Matthew Ling
                          2016: Harry Perryman
                          2015: Eric Hipwood
                          2014: Jake Lever
                          2013: Cam McCarthy
                          2012: Aiden Corr
                          2011: Devon Smith

More than a few handy names among the bunch.
