Disappointed - Melbourne now likely to snare Hogan with pick #4.

5 & 6 should give us something decent

And seemingly not for the player we really wanted all along. So I fail to see how this is a good position compared to 30 minutes ago.

Just on Melbourne, they have picks 3 and 4 in the ND as well as pick 13 as part of the Scully compo, and they get Viney for pick 26. Part with pick 4 for Hogan (we can better that unless we pay ridiculous overs), which means Melbourne get pick 3, Hogan, pick 13 and Viney. They also have the flexibility to package up pick 3 and 13 to try and secure get a superstar of the competition if they wanted to go down that path instead (and I'm not talking about a Dawes type either).
Still think we are in a good position with the draft you would have to be super negative not to think so. Even though we miss out on the MD we have two early picks that will net us two highly qualified players that can play next year. What is not to like about that.

May I just say... MOTHER*!*!*!*!ERS. Undoubtedly, the worst case scenario for us. Not only do we miss out on Martin, but GC don't bid for Viney. I'm pretty damn disappointed right now.

No guarantees with these picks (as evidenced by our own experiences in the past with Williams and Grant) and clearly the club does not rate the players available at these picks anywhere near the level that they rated Martin. They could turn out to be guns but I wouild suspect the club is shattered at being trumped by both GC and Melbourne this morning.

Re: Dogs Keen on Jack Martin in Mini Draft

I think we played our cards far too early in this mini draft saga.

All GC had to do was throw down their wild card at the last minute, we had already gone all in days ago.

Pretty amateurish from the dogs i must say.

GC played us and beautifully, pretending they were interested in Viney.
Perhaps Melbourne knew better with this Viney rouge, and knew they wanted Martin all along.

I fail to see how we were outplayed. What could we have done to prevent Viney going in the second round? What could we have done to prevent Gold Coast bidding #2 for Martin?

I agree, don't think there is much the club could have done but it's still disappointing.

Agree, it was reported months ago GC may bid pick 2.

Our guys rated Martin as a once in a generation talent and we have missed out on him. The work we've put into this would suggest that any of the players available at 5 and 6 were seen as inferior to securing Martin, and many woof posters who intently watch U-18 and colts matches would agree with our club's assessment of Martin.

It's understandable that we are disappointed, but again this is turning into a bag the club exercise. I don't understand the mentality at all.

Very disappointing but I guess if we could see how great Martin was, so could everyone else. Don't really see how this result could have been prevented.

Agree. It was spoken about on this forum as a scenario. They had the picks before us. There was nothing we could do if GC wanted Martin. Unless the thinking is that GC picked Martin only because we wanted him and if anyone thinks that way they are crackers!

Ultimately nothing, but we have been very public about our intentions with Martin compared to other clubs.
