Wasn’t he at an AFL club as an assistant or something a year or two ago ?
To be honest just shows how he isn’t up to it if he is going as an assistant of some sort under MCartney.

        Yeah, that's not what happened.

James Hird joins Port Melbourne as director of coaching after turning down senior role

James Hird turned down the senior coaching position at historic VFL club Port Melbourne, but he has joined the Borough as director of coaching.

The role will reunite the former Essendon champion with his Bombers assistant Brendan McCartney, who will be senior coach.

When Hird declined Port?s approach to replace Adam Skrobalak, he suggested McCartney would be an excellent candidate and they could work together.

McCartney?s arrival was signed off on Friday night, agreeing to a two-year deal.

Hird will sit alongside him in the coaching box in what one Port official called a ?sort of chairman of selectors role??.

He will also regularly attend training.

Hird ? whose son Tom plays at Port Melbourne - declined the senior position because of his work commitments.

McCartney, 63, coached the Western Bulldogs from 2012-14 and more recently has been at country club North Ballarat.

He also worked at Collingwood this year.

Late last week McCartney announced he would be leaving the Roosters after four years.

?We have always known that a coach of Macca?s calibre would have opportunities beyond North Ballarat and, while we are sad to lose him, we are very supportive of him exploring full- time options to coach at a higher level,? North Ballarat president Richard Start said.

Port Melbourne finished the season with a win over the Northern Bullants yesterday, closing at a disappointing 6-12.

Do we know if he can actually coach though? Plenty of champions don't quite make it as coaches
His record is obviously overshadowed by the saga

Good q. I think he was thrown in too early and needed Thompson to guide him.
He would certainly need to prove himself.

Do you support letting rehabilitated bank robbers work at the bank? Or would you encourage them to find employment in another industry.

His mateship with Shane Charter during his playing days is enough of a red flag for me before the drug saga hit.

                          That was a ripper.

I know people went for his head and don’t rate BMAC, which was their right based on results and what they saw as fans, but there is no doubt in my mind he is a terrific person and really did value and respect the opportunity to lead our Club. He mentions his uncle Doc there, my father spoke after BMAC at Doc’s funeral and I had the pleasure of talking footy most weeks with Doc on the phone, or having him over to watch on telly when we played interstate. He was incredibly proud of Brendan and Brendan certainly honoured that connection as best he could.

There is no question in my mind that he has a brilliant football mind but until he admits he stuffed up with the supplements saga rather than questioning the findings and saying he did nothing wrong I find his lack of honesty and integrity to be a massive hurdle for a return to the AFL.

The issue with BMac that I can't ever understand is that a lot of people believe the moment he left was the moment our club pivoted and all the players just forgot everything and sucked on the Bevo Kool Aide on the way to greatness, as if a continuum didn't exist.

BMac put in a lot of good work for our club and anyone who disagrees that he has some hand in our premiership in 2016 is not seeing the bigger picture.

He was also a bit of a dick at times. His disrespect over what Eade did when he came in was a lot to stomach (but that was at the absolute height of the media love for Geelong, which still makes me want to vomit to this day).
                              TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.
