A gamble indeed, but so is the draft...

There'll be suggestions they're pulling a Norf but reckon the Cats have lured better calibre talent in smarter age range.

Fully agree. I'm not sure they needed Henderson that badly though.

Geelong are really trying to win another flag in the short term. Poor long term vision if you ask me. Obviously Dangerfield is A-grade but both Selwood and Henderson, whilst good players, are nothing special. Henderson for their round 1 pick - unbelievable. Glad we haven't gone down the path of trading away future draft picks (as yet).

I think Geelong will still finish around 10th next year, with an anchor dragging them down for the next few years after that. They obviously have no faith in their ability to recruit and develop young talent. The early 2000's is beginning to look like a one off fluke.

A round one pick for a player at their 3rd club. That to me is poor list management.

Henderson has shown glimpses but certainly is a long way from trading a 1st round pick. Think I would rather take the chance on a 1st rounder who has potentially 12 to 14 years on a playing list than a player who has maybe 5 to 6 years.

Perhaps one of the selling points to Dangerfield on top of him going back home was a commitment to load up and give him the best chance of a deep run in the finals. They have at least given themselves the best chance and landed all bar Smith from GCS so far.

As it stands, I don't think Geelong can trade away their pick in the 2017 next year.
Yes when a Club trades away the first pick next year they cannot do it again the year after.

In the short term maybe so - but I would still doubt that even considering the state of their list. Will they improve considerably in the next couple of years with the addition of these players? I would expect them to finish top 8 but really can't see them challenging for a flag. Really think that they are panicking and this will bite them in backside in 4 to 5 years time.

Geelong need an established key defender and they desperately needed some quality additions to the midfield to give Selwood a chop-out. They have addressed these glaring weaknesses with players who still have 5-8 years left at the top of their game. It may not come off but there is a clear method to the madness - it is certainly far more methodical and structured than Crazy Vossy's strategy from a few years ago.

It must be in the Scott brothers blood Both are into recycled players instead of the draft.

Did they really need Henderson that badly? Lonergan and Taylor aren't spent forces and Mackie still has a bit to offer. There was also talk that if they land Smith then Stanley might at times also play as a key defender.

I genuinely hope Geelong fall in a hole as a result of this.

In theory it sounds OK but:

Selwood: He's an average footballer. No pace, limited skill, no flexibility in his game. What's his price tag? I'm assuming Geelong are paying around 400 hence WCE not matching? Way overs. His caliber is dime a dozen.

Smith: Lucky to be on an AFL list, still living off the hype of one good year which masks the fact that he's physically inept, slow and merely an upgrade on our own A Cordy.

Henderson: I don't mind him as a player, but a first round pick!? That's ridiculous. As GVGjr said he's worth about Pick 25, it smacks of desperation by Geelong to piss away their first rounder next year on him given they don't have one this year either. I'm sure he'll be solid value for them, but they're not winning the flag, and he's not therefore not worth Pick 10-15ish.

They are clearly loading up to win one whilst they still have Taylor, Lonergan, Enright and a couple of the other veterans still on board. Agree with GVG again that in all likelihood part of convincing Danger had to do with them targeting senior players to have another serious tilt as soon as possible, but straight up sacrificing your future for average to good footballers in Selwood, Smith and Henderson is stupid.

They'll make finals IMO but will be nowhere near top 4.

I think they're cooling on Smith - Wells said it "might be too hard" to get them all in.

Henderson was probably overs (not by miles though), but have you guys SEEN Dangerfield play? That is an incredibly good piece of recruiting that need not be analysed. This is not Brad Scott style topping up, these guys can all play and are in their primes. On paper at least they look fantastic.

Henderson was originally a pick 7 or 8 in the draft. Do people think he has proven himself to be a top 10 or 12 pick (what he's likely to have been traded in for) at this point in his career.

I'd suggest not. I think he is a middle of the range tall - with no real certainty around whether he is a better forward, or defender.

He isn't better than Taylor or Lonergan.

No doubt Dangerfield's a star and makes them legitimate again and I think S.Selwood adds a bit to their midfield just in a negating way. The question for me is more about why they were so keen to land Henderson but he does make them a better side.
