Henderson was probably overs (not by miles though), but have you guys SEEN Dangerfield play? That is an incredibly good piece of recruiting that need not be analysed. This is not Brad Scott style topping up, these guys can all play and are in their primes. On paper at least they look fantastic.
I don't think anyone is doubting the Dangerfield trade. He is outstanding and at 25 still has many years left in him. Would happily trade a top 10 pick for a player of his calibre. The other trades are huge gambles for a team not challenging for a flag (even if they were they are still very average).

      I'll bite - yes.

Genuine good AFL backmen are rare, especially at trade time. Take away the years spent on a list with development and Geelong are getting a guy being played out of position for a pick in next years' draft, which given their list improvements (they should make finals now) is a pick in the teens.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush - I actually think Geelong have done well here, especially considering it doesn't actually cost them anything until next year.

I know AFL fans often prefer someone "young" because "hope" - but actual developed ability is important. It's one reason ruckmen are rarely drafted anyone - too many variables between drafting and becoming AFL standard. Stefan Martin has overtaken a pick 4 ND ruckman!

If you compare our picks in the teens with Henderson - I'm certain Henderson comes out ahead in almost every comparison bar Ward (who we stuffed up by not re-signing earlier anyway)

Mackie and Lonergan have more poor games than good ones these days - likewise Taylor was really poor in 2015 compared to his elite level. And all 3 aren't getting any younger - Taylor was a mature age draftee in 2007. Henderson is a good solid key defender - he may not be quite worth a first rounder but he's not far off, and he'll be there in 3 years time when the other 3 might all be already finished. People aren't blinking at rating Carlisle as being worth a pick 9 or 13 - I would have Henderson at least in the same conversation as Carlisle in terms of ability as a key defender if he's not quite at that level.

Scott Selwood is a bit of a dime a dozen but Geelong need those workhorse types in the coalface so that Danger and Joel Selwood can actually get more dangerous. Geelong's midfield looks a hell of a lot better with those two additions to compliment the current core of Joel Selwood, Duncan, Caddie and Guthrie.

The chase for Zac Smith puzzles me - as TBB mentioned, he is slow and one-dimensional not to mention soft as butter. Hawthorn just won 3 flags with unremarkable tap ruckmen who happen to be very versatile. Ruckmen are seriously over-rated if someone like a Zac Smith is considered elite.

Ok. Fair enough. We certainly have a different view on Henderson's performance as an AFL player - but your reasoning above is perfectly valid.

Scott Selwood needs a third ankle operation...a reconstruction... from the injury he got in 2014. Must be a doubt on him at least.

If everyone agreed on a player's worth everyone would offer deals for every player and trade week would be boring.

I can understand Geelong's strategy. I don't think Lonergan and Taylor will be around after this year and Kolo isn't a sole KPD - he needs the support Henderson will provide.

I can understand the Selwood FA signing too - he had a very good 2013 and has had two years ruined by injury (he wasn't made VC for nothing).
I'm not sure Geelong have the base of solid kids that justifies going so hard right now but they won't bottom out on current list management practices and there is a chance that they'll continue to bring players in that will help them rise up the ladder (the Swans largely built a list this way too).

We showed solid balls with the Boyd trade last year, and smarts bringing in Hamling and Biggs. I hope we've got something else this year, Suckling as a FA is a positive for mine so we are actively looking by all accounts.

The 1999 draft practically no one could have got wrong. Geelong ended up with Ling, Corey, Enright, and Chapman. Then they had the luck with the father sons before the AFL changed the rules. Maybe their recruitment has been over rated but we never saw it.

Over the past 4 National drafts they have had only 5 players play more than 20 games and of those, one has played 60 but the rest have played less than 30.

                            Another big price to pay.

Nice player but not worth that IMO.
