I'm not too bothered by our lack of trading in general, but either a ruck (allowing Roughy to play FB) or a key defender (allowing Roughy/TC to ruck) would be ideal and give us an opportunity to finish top four next year IMO.

Our list looks pretty good, no need for sideway trades.

Spot on. We've replaced Fuller with Suckling, we have picks 11 & 30 at the moment. We have 3 rookie spots open. The big issue is trading Talia for something reasonable (late 2nd round?) and resigning Grant if there is no RFA deal or the best RFA compensation pick available is 3rd round.

Pies backed into a corner there, might be looked back on as a shrewd piece of work by the Saints

I actually think the pies have done well there.
Second round pick in a reportedly strong draft, and a guy who has hamstring issues and hasn't played a game.
Clubs giving up future picks, hmmm the teen with a credit card springs to mind .

High draft picks are like new cars these days.
As soon as you drive them off the lot, they drop their value by about 30%

But everyone is attracted to that new car smell.

Exactly. In the past 2 years GWS has managed to turn pick 2 in 2012 into pick 18, and pick 3 in 2012 into a pick in the 20's with a package of others thrown in. Good business that, but teams won't give up a "guaranteed gun" in the form a top 5 pick for anyone other than a superstar. Melbourne turned pick 4 into a rotation of fringe players.

That's an atrocious trade. Menzel is one of the few players at Carlton that are both young and talented.

Menzel is overrated.

Not particularly quick, doesn't win his own ball, no tank.

He's smart with good skills but nowhere near what many predicted he'd become.

Possibly, but he's still a genuinely talented 21yo and genuine talent is very much in painfully short supply at Carlton. Surprised the new coach hasn't backed himself in to address Menzel's deficiencies and make him a more rounded quality player.

Kerridge is very much a meh type player that is no upgrade at all on the likes of Mitch Robinson and Tom Bell. This trade makes Carlton even more blue-collar than they currently are. If Carlton are playing the long game as they are suggesting to the media, surely Menzel has more long-term improvement than Kerridge.
