Dustin Martin in talks with Gold Coast over continuing his AFL career

Dustin Martin has met Gold Coast coach Damien Hardwick in the post-season, intensifying speculation one of the game’s greats is set to join the Suns for the 2025 season.

Martin, 32, would become a Suns player as a free agent.

The shock development that Martin is leaning towards continuing his AFL career has grown substance in recent weeks.

The cost for the Suns would be a list spot and Martin’s wage – estimated to be $500,000-$700,000 – and the Tigers would receive nothing.

Martin, 33, played his final game for the Tigers on August 3 and announced his retirement two days later.

It’s believed Martin has spent recent weeks weighing up whether he has the motivation to continue playing.

It’s also believed Martin has dropped several kilograms in weight in preparation for pre-season training.

The AFL would welcome the three-time Norm Smith medallist to Suns but Martin would likely miss out on any AFL ambassador money.

Despite his national profile and popularity with kids, it’s believed the AFL would be reluctant to pay Martin a Gary Ablett-type salary to promote the game in Queensland.

An ambassadorial package would require Martin to be available to all media to help promote the game and be open to various school and promotional visits.

His refusal to speak to the AFL media for the past decade would count against Martin if he was to pursue an ambassador’s role.

Martin played 302 games for the Tigers, including the 2017, 2019-20 premierships.

Am I right that it wouldn't make a difference for Richmond because he would have been an unrestricted free agent anyway, and his age/contract wouldn't trigger compo?

THE CHASE for Dan Houston has narrowed, with St Kilda drawing back its interest in the dual All-Australian Power defender.

The Saints were among four clubs to recently meet with Houston, who is keen to return to Melbourne where he has strong personal pull, but are understood to have cooled their pursuit in attracting him to the club.

Port Adelaide is chasing an early draft selection and another strong draft pick for the 27-year-old playmaker, and St Kilda loomed as a club that could strike a deal given it will be hoping to land a band one compensation pick for free agent Josh Battle's move to Hawthorn. That would give the club picks seven and eight, with the second a potential chip to land Houston.

However the Saints are believed to have pulled away from the Houston race, leaving Carlton, Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs in the hunt. North Melbourne, too, has held interest in Houston and put forward its 2025 first-round pick for him but the Roos weren't part of the clubs he spoke with recently.

May as well chuck some cash his way. If we're offloading Macrae, Smith is leaving and Barass isn't coming we can at least offer a more financially attractive package. Picks from next year and trade outs might be enough to make Power happy.

All he’s saying (that I can tell) is Saints will throw him a stupid offer to try to get a trade request. But Essendon will say no. But it will be a silly figure.
