Plenty to play out still this year.
We do need a replacement for Jones, he is not getting any younger, and the body will break down more

Let?s assume we get at least one more high quality year from Jones, but he?s demonstrated he won?t play every week and maybe he plays 15 games next year (plus finals!).

Keath maybe retires? Maybe he gets one more year - let?s see how his season pans out and what the motivation levels are like. Could be a sensible insurance and VFL level defender at worst I suppose if happy to take a minimum deal.

Gardner is a good backstop if we need.

Lobb continues to develop and has at least one more year but potentially a few if he embraces the role and re-signs, as a key defender.

Busslinger seems he could be a Jones replacement longer term? Maybe not the same athletic traits but similar style.

JOD is a different style to Jones, and may not end up a key defender, but can play those roles for us.

While I suspect Croft is still earmarked for a forward role, we could see him shifted back perhaps?

Buku and Coffield can play as third tall options.

Barrass is a very solid key defender and has a few more years than Jones, but is he a difference maker? Maybe he is and we recruit him and win 3 flags in a row. I?m just not quite as big on him as others and while we?ve got a lot of unknowns if one or two things go directionally right with our existing group, could that capital we?d pay for Barrass be better spent on drafting or recruiting a productive midfielder? Especially if we?re losing Baz to facilitate whatever deal we end up doing.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

They'll eventually play Croft back, once Busslinger clears the twos.
        TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

I'd like us to get another key defender and Barrass is a good player but to give up a first rounder to secure him given we seem to be in a bit of a transition period with the list is a bit of a hit. To get a deal done with WC it's probably something like B.Smith for Barrass and given some decline in output from Macrae and Daniel as midfielders it's a big hit to our midfield options. I'd prefer to keep Smith if that is in anyway possible.

Depend on the first rounder doesn’t it?

I mean, say Smith goes to Geelong as expected. Say the have Pick 15 (+ F2 we keep). Say there’s a couple of compo picks before it = Pick 17

Say there’s three matches bids = Pick 20

If WCE were to demand and accept that first rounder (Pick 20 by use) for Barass I think that’s too good to refuse. Even if it notionally is a first rounder.

God we are going to get rolled with Baz aren't we.

I'm never been an advocate for walking a guy to the PSD.

However..... Baz hmmm wouldn't that be a classic.

Geelong will abuse us worse than Brisbane. Sorry to say. Unless we can get a fair deal I’d threaten the PSD. I advocated threatening Dunkley with it but Brisbane just laughed at us. So Geelong know this and I doubt anyone will believe a PSD threat.

It’s a matter of if we can turn the scraps into something worth our while. Hence, I’d look at Barass as he’s a good player and we have a first rounder for them potentially, just not a great one.

Was reading about Mackie playing hardball for a pick in the 70s ? last year and he's turned it into Lawson Humphries (whom I know nothing about but apparently is good..... MJP?)

You will likely see Humphries get BOG Saturday night as he is currently in the GeeLong team.

If the pick in the 70s is so worthless then why didn’t Port just agree to it immediately

If I remember right that was basically their first pick in the draft cause they were trading everything else

Very good players rarely come to us, in fact they more often than not go the other way. The media is still bandying about us as a top 4 team at our best. If we can match it with the best then we're thereabouts in the window.

We'd be mad not to get Barrass for three years. He's more than just a 'good' player.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

Yeah to be clear Barrass is a stud and we should get him if he wants to move.

He's a nice player. Played some good footy for Swan Districts in the seniors over here...not a heap of exposed form at senior level so it was a pretty brave pick but I guess the sort of player who is worth taking a flyer on...

Big relocation project though and I'm not sure that's something our club takes on.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.
