Re: ASADA issues show-cause notices to Essendon players

Club statement: Employment of Brent Prismall

The Western Bulldogs Football Club wishes to clarify the position following reports today relating to Brent Prismall.

Brent Prismall returned to his employment with the Club after the Club had clarified with the AFL that his duties and job description did not conflict with the Arbitral Award of the Court of Arbitration for Sport and the penalties contained in it.

The AFL confirmed in writing its consent to and authorisation of Brent’s return. The AFL also informed the Club at this time that it provided such consent and authorisation on the basis of advice received from ASADA.

If the Club is informed by the AFL that its position has changed, it will of course act in conformity with the AFL’s direction.

        That should make everyone happy.

Why so many believed we'd "defy" any sanctions that were put in place is beyond me. I'd like to think most of our supporters would think we're smarter than that.

I do have queries over the advice provided by ASADA and if in the position of the club would have insisted this advice be in writing - which you'd assume it would be.

From the above article, it would appear that we are communicating through the AFL and taking ASADA advice through them also.

From the final sentence "If the Club is informed by the AFL that it's position has changed, it will of course act in conformity with the AFL's direction." it would seem that the discussion is ongoing.

All in all, I still think it would've been wiser to have Prismall away from the club on full pay (reimbursed by Essendon) over this period, rather than all this fuss. Is it really in his best interests, or anyones, other than to make some esoteric point?

We are bound by AFL rules, which are subject to ASADA/WADA provisions. We have to work through the AFL and seek their permission.

And that's why it's a murky scenario we are choosing to involve ourselves in. ASADA are now claiming they gave clear advice not to employ Prismall and that they are unaware of any communications between the AFL and us.

This is going to be a circus we have volunteered for. Unnecessary distraction.

He should be stood down immediately now ASADA has confirmed via a statement he should not be operating in the role.

Until they confirm via statement he is clear to resume his role the club needs to be sensible and not take the risk.

                            Prismall now stood down.

ASADA claim they clearly told AFL that Prismall was not to be employed.

We claim AFL clearly said Prismall could be employed.

Someone has stuffed up badly. Hope it's not us.

Looks like this might have been an option but we'll miss out if we continue with our current approach.
