Re: ASADA issues show-cause notices to Essendon players

The Prismall article for those that haven't read it:

Western Bulldogs says banned player Brent Prismall is working at the club after AFL approval, despite ASADA advice

BANNED former Bomber Brent Prismall is working at the Western Bulldogs in defiance of advice from the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority.

Prismall is the only member of the Essendon 34 who *!remains in the AFL system.

The Herald Sun can reveal ASADA provided advice to the AFL after the January 12 Court of Arbitration for Sport verdict indicating that Prismall should be stood down from his position as the Bulldogs’ player welfare manager while serving his suspension.

Twelve current Essendon players and five now at other clubs will sit out the AFL *!season, along with Greater Western Sydney assistant coach Mark McVeigh.

The drugs bans apply to all levels of football and have cost former Bombers such as Nathan Lovett-Murray, Sam Lon-ergan and Henry Slattery country coaching jobs.

Bulldogs president Peter Gordon said the AFL had approved Prismall’s employment at the club.

“The AFL have indicated to us in writing their comfort with the arrangement,” Gordon told the Herald Sun.

“We are fully satisfied that the terms of engagement fit within the *!parameters of all relevant *!regulations and we are pleased that he is able to continue.”

But an AFL spokesperson said talks with ASADA about Prismall’s job were continuing.

“The AFL has been in discussions with ASADA with respect to the implications of the suspensions for all 34 players on a case-by-case basis,” she said.

“These discussions with ASADA are continuing.”

Section 22.1 of the AFL anti-doping code states that “no player or other person who has been declared ineligible may, during the period of ineligibility, participate in any *!capacity in an AFL competition or activity”.

Asked about the job of Prismall (pictured) at the Bulldogs, an ASADA spokesman said: “As the AFL have responsibility for enforcing their anti-doping policy in the first instance, we suggest you contact them.”

The Herald Sun has been told at least one senior AFL *!figure agrees with ASADA’s position on Prismall’s employment.

Others believe that unlike the circumstances facing McVeigh at GWS, Prismall’s work in player welfare is not directly connected to the Dogs’ on-field performance, therefore not in breach of the code.

It also emerged that Lonergan, who has lost his job as playing coach of Launceston Football Club, was *!exploring options to remain employed by the club in *!another capacity.

    THE CODE SAYS NO

Status during ineligibility according to the AFL anti-doping code.

    * 22.1 Prohibition Against Participation During Ineligibility

    (a) No Player or other Person who has been declared Ineligible may, during the period of Ineligibility, participate in any capacity in an AFL Competition or activity (other than authorised Anti-Doping education or rehabilitation programs) authorised by the AFL, Affiliated State or Territory Body or AFL Clubs, any Signatory or Signatory’s member organisation or a club or other member organisation of a Signatory’s member organisation, or in competitions authorised or organised by any professional league or any international or national level event organisation or any elite or national-level sporting activity funded by a government agency.

How does a banned player taking it upon himself to train away from the club, with others in the same situation, whith no input from the club, suddenly become provocative.

I really feel for Stu, and all the other players regarding this. Good on them for getting themselves organised and motivated enough to get something completely within the rules happening.

The provocative part is to get a former Hird assistant to co-ordinate the whole thing, when many others could do the job - Mick Malthouse had already put his hand up. Having Sean Wellman as the trainer/leader is a clear and needlessly provocative, even petulant, act.

Re: ASADA issues show-cause notices to Essendon players

The Prismall situation is a reminder that the entire AFL community is not taking the issue of doping seriously. When you are a big fish in a small pond, you struggle with the concept of ceding to a higher authority.

I think the arrogance of our actions in this instance (with the AFL's blessing) are an indictment on both the club and the overall code. Irrespective of whether or not there is a contravention of the rules at play (I'll let the experts decide), it just reinforces the sheer arrogance of our code to think that we are above every other world sport.

I've been racking my brains for the last 3 years trying to understand why all the other clubs (and city hall) are not disgusted with the actions and behaviour of the EFC and their doping regime. The reality is that we don't really give a shit about having a clean sport, and especially being held to account to a higher authority to ensure we do have a clean sport. It's all about the cash, the gate receipts, the ratings, the crowds...

I listened to Ings on radio today, he was astonished to think Prismall was still involved in any official capacity.

Why are we bothering? Why not just put someone else on a short term contract in Prismall's position? This seems proud and stupid of us.

Personally I see no harm in him doing the role. He is not playing or training players, he is a welfare officer.

We actually have a duty to keep him employed if we believe he is entitled to be employed. It's a matter of principle, and probably doesn't have anything to do with him being replaceable or otherwise.

Fair enough, but I reckon there must've been someone outside of the Hird inner sanctum that could've organised a bit of training. Why bring that heat on themselves, other than to just thumb their noses at the authorities? If EFC want to go down that path good luck to them, I couldn't care less, but I really don't like that our people seem to always be the other party buying into this nonsense.

Seriously, if any other club had a currently serving time doper as their Player Welfare Officer, we would hurl no end of derision at them. I don't like us putting ourselves in that position.

Not impressed by the Prismall decision. Seems an unnecessarily risky move.

If the club wants to stand by the affected players then that's fine even if I do disagree with it, but I think it is irresponsible to risk both the club and Prismall being punished when we could at the very least wait until there has been an appropriate verdict made by WADA or whoever is the authority.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

The harm I see is that if breaches the code.

We should not be trusting the AFL on this.

I can only think that he is deeply involved in a therapeutic/therapy/rehab program and it is entirely impractical to replace him. That's the only reason that another welfare officer can't be employed. At least for a while until we get the assurance of somebody more qualified and capable than the AFL that it's OK. Like WADA maybe.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Please do not let him be involved in any way with rehab. If that's the case, and we have a sentenced doper who was under the Dank/Hird programme involved in our rehab programmes whilst still serving time, then we'll deserve everything that comes our way.
