It was a ban, but I think it was to be served primarily over an off season depending on whom in the media you trust more. The bigger issue was the second point, admitting to guilt and tipping the others in.

    Will be interesting.

Cronulla players were found guilty under the ASADA prosecution and given a 12 month ban but, after deductions, missed 3 weeks.

The scenarios are not identical, but I just can't see a full 2 years, no deductions, happening.
Could very well be 6 months having players back before the end of the season.

Players free to play but not with Essendon as they will be deregistered as a club entity from the AFL for 1 or 2 years.

Whoa, that would be some serious shiraz. I didn't even consider that there may be ramifications on Essendon's licence but that makes a whole lot of sense.

This would also beautifully alleviate the dilemma of 1. Wanting to see Essendon get their comeuppance but 2. Not wanting Crameri to get rubbed out.

With TV contracts and whatnot, the AFL needs 18 teams and 9 games per week, come what may. The idea of the licence being in jeopardy, however meritorious in terms of natural justice, just ain't gonna happen.

Yeah, I looked into it a little and it doesn't seem that Wada/Asada/Cas impose any bans on the clubs, just the personnel/athletes. Incidentally, I read a few of the reports from the "recent decisions" section of the CAS website and there seems to be a tendency to backdate where there have been lengthy delays or provisional suspensions involved. We will know in a few short hours, but I now have a feeling that they will be guilty but with very little time to serve.

These are the specific points it references in some of the Wada versus ... cases:

“[w]here there have been substantial delays in the hearing process or other aspects of Doping Control not attributable to the Rider or other Person, the FIM or Anti-Doping Organisation imposing the sanction may start the period of Ineligibility at an earlier date commencing as early as the date of Sample collection or the date which another anti-doing rule violation last occurred.”
              74. It must also be noted that Article 10.9.3 of the FIM ADR provides that “[i]f a Provisional Suspension is imposed and respected by the Rider, then the Rider shall receive a credit for such period of Provisional Suspension against any period of Ineligibility which may ultimately be imposed.”

From what I can gather, sentences will be served from the first serving of notices (November 2014), which would mean even a full penalty would see them miss this full season max.

Outrageous decision. So far away from any sort of justice at all. CAS and WADA ought to be ashamed of themselves.

                        This isn't justice. It's vengeance.

Hopefully the feeding frenzy starts now and leaves EFC an empty, decayed carcass on the sporting landscape in Australia.

I reckon it's only a matter of time now. One already has.

Essendon still has Workcover, Hal Hunter to deal with before any of that (let alone finding a heap of players for a full season).

They've still got years of this to come.

In a weird way I reckon this decision is ultimately good for them. They need a proper purging of the soul.

If the AFL and ASADA (and themselves) had've presided over this decisively and properly 3 years ago, this whole thing would've been dealt with now and the club could've dealt with matters conclusively and progressed.

Can't agree with you on this one TD. Although the evidence within the public domain is not conclusive, it's pretty overwhelming for mine (besides, we don't know what else CAS had, we do know they interviewed several parties extensively and damning text messages between players were reported to have been found).

Once the court had established to their reasonable satisfaction that banned substances were taken systematically and extensively and that officials and players had taken steps to withhold what they knew, I can't see how they weren't going down?

Within the WADA world, full bans have been given for a lot less.

I'm really interested in your opinion.
