Deep Heat Medical Room: Round 5
The latest injury updates ahead of our Gather Round clash with Brisbane.
Western Bulldogs forward Laith Vandermeer will be monitored across the week after being subbed out Sunday’s match against Fremantle.
Vandermeer was removed from the game in the second quarter, after developing knee soreness in the opening term.
“In the first quarter, Laith had the onset of some pain behind his knee,” Head of Sports Medicine Chris Bell said.
“This did inhibit his ability to hit top-end speed, which is obviously one of his weapons, so he was subbed out of the game.
“Scans have confirmed that he does have some low-grade cartilage damage in his knee.
“At this stage we have a conservative management plan around Laith, with a level of optimism that his symptoms will settle quickly. We will confirm his return-to-play plan in the coming days."
Anthony Scott will be placed in concussion protocols after a collision in the VFL, while Marcus Bontempelli (calf) and Jason Johannisen (hamstring) are on track.
“In the VFL, Anthony was involved in a tackle where he hit his head on the ground,” Bell said.
“This mechanism caused Anthony to become concussed.
“He has entered our concussion management framework and will work closely with our doctors to confirm his return-to-play plan.
“In some great news, JJ has built some great continuity in his training following his high-grade hamstring injury. He has pretty much fully trained the last 2-3 weeks and has completed multiple match simulation type training sessions. He will be in good stead to return to availability this weekend.
“Marcus has continued to progress really well following his complex calf injury. He will re-integrate into team training this week.
“He is on track to complete a controlled game-parameters training session this Saturday, which should set him up to return to availability in Round 6 against the Saints.”👍 2Comment

I'm no doctor but I wonder if being restricted for so long means that when you ramp up movement again, your body is more susceptible to injury.Comment

Yeah it’s hard to see how, when you’re still 8+ weeks off, you could possibly do a 4+ month quad. Sounds like a pretty nasty situation, hopefully he can get it right with the extra time off, he misses so many games every year through injury unfortunately👍 1Comment

Even so, hard to imagine he is doing anything explosive enough to casue that. Maybe he slipped or something and it was an unintended movement.Comment

Where is the Weightman news coming from?
This is from earlier this year, I googled because I couldn't remember what his issue was...
"The 24-year-old has the rare congenital condition called bipartite patella, which involves a false joint that sits within his kneecap bone.
“I had to get a bit of my hip actually put into my knee in the end. It was a bit of a bone graft...there was a bit of missing bone in the knee where the gap was. (I also got) two pins through the parts of the knee to connect them back up.
“I think eventually I get those pins out when the bone has grown back to one.”
Link
The quad muscle connects directly to the patella/kneecap, so given his initial surgery (and then revision surgery!) were focussed on the patella it would not take large forces for him to reinjure the quad muscle or tendon. Getting strength and control back in his quad will be the focus of his rehab - I would think he has presented with pain while doing some 'simple' exercises and we have stepped things back cautiously.
This wasn't just an arthroscope to cut out some loose cartilage - it was major orthopaedic surgery.

Cody was in a big knee brace type thing today, limping around given it forced his leg to stay straight. Didn’t seem like something you would have on for a quad injury, I assumed it was due to his follow up knee surgery that was reported?👍 1Comment

From the AFL website
WESTERN Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli is on track to return for the new Easter Sunday night clash against St Kilda, while James Harmes has been cleared of a serious foot injury.
Bontempelli has missed the first five rounds of the season after suffering a complex calf injury in the AAMI Community Series match against Hawthorn at the end of February.
The six-time All-Australian remained in Melbourne while the club travelled to Adelaide for Gather Round and completed an extensive training session at the Whitten Oval on Saturday morning
Bontempelli will need to prove his fitness at Thursday's main session to be given the green light to return in round six, while the club will keep monitoring how he recovers from each session.
Luke Beveridge’s side have won two of five games to start the year and led at half-time in losses against Collingwood in round two and Brisbane on Saturday.
Harmes was substituted out of Saturday's 21-point loss to the Lions at Norwood Oval in the opening minutes after injuring his foot.
The club initially feared the former Melbourne midfielder-forward had suffered a serious foot injury, but scans on Sunday cleared Harmes of a long-term setback.
The club initially feared the former Melbourne midfielder-forward had suffered a serious foot injury, but scans on Monday cleared Harmes of bone damage.
The 29-year-old has played the first five games of 2025 and is expected to miss in the short-term. The club will have a clearer timeline later in the week.
All-Australian midfielder Adam Treloar is at least a few weeks away while he builds up his conditioning after a series of calf strains over the past four months.

Deep Heat Medical Room: Round 6
The latest on Marcus Bontempelli, James Harmes and Anthony Scott ahead of Sunday's clash with St Kilda.
Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli is firming to return this Easter Sunday night against the Saints, pending he gets through Thursday’s main training unscathed.
Bontempelli has not yet lined up this season, following a complex calf injury he sustained in the AAMI Community Series match against Hawthorn in February.
“Marcus has continued to progress really nicely and build a great volume of work following his complex calf injury,” Bulldogs Head of Sports Medicine Chris Bell said.
“He completed a match parameters training session on Saturday and came through really well.
“His plan is to fully train this week, and if he gets through training like I expect, he’ll return to availability.”
James Harmes will be monitored throughout the week after being subbed out of Saturday’s Gather Round defeat to Brisbane, while Anthony Scott is progressing well following a concussion he suffered a fortnight ago.
“In the first few minutes of the game on the weekend, James went to accelerate and felt some acute pain in his foot,” Bell said.
“We weren't able to exclude any serious injuries, so we subbed him out of the game.
“Scans have cleared him of any serious bone damage, but confirmed that he does have some damage in a joint in his foot.
“We’ll have to wait for these symptoms to settle down in the next couple of days before we can confirm his return-to-play plan.
“Anthony has continued to progress really well through our concussion protocols, but he still has some boxes to tick for us this week before we can confirm his return-to-play plan.”
