      Re: 2017 Draft Watch

This could be a very good draft for us if a few things fall out way. I think Freo's pick 5 is the most interesting one and of course what the Saints do with consecutive picks.

        Re: 2017 Draft Watch

With our trading last month we were clearly looking at using 9 and 11 (when that was on the table) to get something in the top 5. I wonder who we were hoping to get with that pick.

With all those players still in play at 9, we probably end up with 2 of them (as some must b left at 16).

Well who would we pick from that list then? Somehow I am thinking we will go for Bonar, just for his size and ability.

Likely to walk at very happy in such circumstances with the club's message about we got a gun player after slipping to us bigly. If we could walk away with two polished midfielders and a 'Dal Late Pick Special' at 82, forward pocket maybe, then we've addressed mids, talls (Schache, Trengove) and smalls. Very balanced outcome if we can do it.

If Fremantle don't go for Hayes or land a ruckman I wonder if English would be on their radar in in the short term?

I know contracts mean nothing, but we have Timmy for 3 more years. So I hope not.

                      Re: 2017 Draft Watch

SEN have posted something on Jordan Houlahan

Comparisons to highlight reel Collingwood star Jeremy Howe have become par for the course for Sturt teenager Jordan Houlahan.

A high-leaping half forward capable of standing on opponent’s heads, the 19-year-old half forward enters this year’s draft as arguably the most exciting pure football talent on draft boards.

Sturt general manager David Oatey said while the entire football package was still coming together, Houlahan’s capacity to excite was unquestionable.

“Jordan is a spectacular player,” he said.

“He has an outrageously good vertical jump but also reads the flight of the ball really well, so every week he will take a couple of Jeremy Howe-type hangers.

“While he’s played up forward, like Howe, he potentially could end up playing across half-back.”

Howe joined Collingwood under the assumption he would reprise his role as a high-flying forward, but as the injury toll hit, he was forced to move to defence and hasn’t looked back. After finishing fifth in last year’s best and fairest the 27-year-old former Demon placed fourth in 2017 behind runner away winner Steele Sidebottom.

With a similar skill set, the Sturt teenager shapes as a player with untapped X-factor heading into this year’s draft.

After undergoing a shoulder reconstruction last October the young forward took some time to find his feet after a limited pre-season.

Having left school last year, he spent this season living and working on a family orchard five days a week.

He played every game for South Australia at the national championships and made a reserves debut. Given the varied schedules he played in both the Under-18 and reserve grade Grand Finals.

A Carlton supporter growing up, Houlahan has had his worth ethic questioned by some and acknowledges it’s an area for improvement.

“It’s an area I’ve got to work on,” he said.

“I only did about four weeks of pre-season and started the year off a bit slow, but the second half of the year was solid. After the shoulder injury I’ve done as much as I could to try and catch up.

“My running is getting better but it has to keep improving.

“If I get to a club then that system should help me with the areas I need to.”

Rated a second or third round prospect, a host of clubs are interested in securing a player who has areas to work on but can do things few can’t.

I know there’s an unhealthy obsession with players needing to (in time) take a turn in the midfield. Do you think Murphy can do that Doc?

His lead up and strength in the air is good which means he can read the play and should be strong in the contest at ground level but I haven’t seen a huge amount of being able to win his own ball in congestion. He does keep his time in possession low, always looking to move the ball quickly which bodes well and seems to move the ball to good areas.

Does getting West next year sway our thinking in terms of player type? Sounds like Brayshaw is a fairly similar player so we may be inclined to look at someone more 'outside' with 9

                              Tim Kelly article on AFL.com

WEST Australian midfielder Tim Kelly shapes as the first mature-age player to be picked at this year's NAB AFL Draft after an impressive season at WAFL level.

The 23-year-old had a brilliant year for South Fremantle and finished second in the competition's Sandover Medal to win an invitation to the NAB AFL Draft Combine.

A knee injury ruled him out of testing at the Combine at Etihad Stadium, but he remains in the mix as a top-30 pick on November 24.

West Coast has a bevy of second-round selections (No.21, 26, 32, 37) and has been linked to the local product, while Geelong is another club who could look at the 183cm prospect who kicked 26 goals from the midfield this season. The Cats hold three second-round picks (No.22, 24, 35).

Kelly first nominated for the draft in 2012 but enjoyed the best season of his career this year to place himself with a genuine shot at being listed by an AFL club.

Hard to say GD, most of his play is forward or back where he can see play unfolding upfield. Maybe thats his go. My query is he hasn't been tested against his peers all that much at the very elite level, ie national u/18's. His performance in the all stars game was underwhelming although he went off injured. But did little.
