Re: 2017 Draft Watch
I'd be very surprised if Adelaide weren't into Brander.Cal Twomey is indicating that Jarrod Brander could be a big slider so we might have a new candidate at pick 16.
From other things I've read, Adelaide isn't interested and neither are the Swans. West Coast should prefer the local boy in Allen if they are considering a tall forward. If Brisbane is considering Lachlan Fogarty at pick 15 to be paired with Rayner then we could be in a great spot to land Brander.
It's a giant jigsaw and a lot of pieces aren't fitting but it's strange that so much is open at the moment.Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?Comment

I'd like to not pass on Cerra at 9. If he's the slider from the top group, if have him in a heart beat. Re: 2017 Draft Watch
Brett Anderson from SEN has us with Naughton (9), and Higgins (16) - see full list here
9. Western Bulldogs
Aaron NAUGHTON
30-Nov-99 | 194.0cm | 85.0kg | Peel Thunder
The Dogs already have a few young tall defenders – and recruited Jackson Trengove – but some scouts think Lewis Young will eventually settle as a forward, while Kieran Collins is still a work in progress. Naughton steps in from day one and plays straight away.
Who else? Nick Coffield, Hunter Clark
16. Western Bulldogs
Jack HIGGINS
19-Mar-99 | 177.8cm | 77.0kg | Oakleigh Chargers
Higgins and Fogarty could easily flip spots given that the Bulldogs were big fans of the latter when he trained there pre-season with the AFL Academy. Higgins will provide the Dogs with a smart little forward who can go through midfield. Murphy is another that they could look at.

Re: 2017 Draft Watch
Nothing new but this is TheAge take on our list and needs:
http://www.theage.com.au/afl/trading...0171118-gzo2he
WESTERN BULLDOGS
Draft picks: 9, 16, 79
DEPTH CHART
KEY DEFENDERS: Marcus Adams, Jackson Trengove, Zaine Cordy, Fletcher Roberts, Lewis Young, Kieran Collins
SMALL/MEDIUM DEFENDERS: Jason Johannisen, Easton Wood, Dale Morris, Shane Biggs, Matt Suckling, Hayden Crozier, Bailey Williams, Brad Lynch
MIDFIELDERS: Marcus Bontempelli, Jack Macrae, Luke Dahlhaus, Lachie Hunter, Caleb Daniel, Toby McLean, Mitch Wallis, Liam Picken, Tom Liberatore, Lin Jong, Patrick Lipinski
KEY FORWARDS: Tom Boyd, Jack Redpath, Josh Schache
SMALL/MEDIUM FORWARDS: Bailey Dale, Josh Dunkley, Lukas Webb, Tory Dickson, Clay Smith, Mitch Honeychurch, Fergus Greene
RUCKS: Jordan Roughead, Tim English, Tom Campbell, Nathan Mullenger-McHugh
They had their critics during the trade period but credit to the Bulldogs, who eventually procured pick 16 to offset the turbulent departure of Jake Stringer. They also landed Josh Schache – a No. 2 draft pick only two years ago – on the cheap as well as filling holes with Jackson Trengove and Hayden Crozier. Both of these players are versatile, which is in fitting with the Dogs' mantra under Luke Beveridge and it will be interesting to see what they do with the pair. With Bob Murphy and Matthew Boyd having retired, the Dogs have a bit of a hole at half-back. Some have them linked to Hunter Clark, who uses the ball well and has developed a midfield string to his bow, while there's considerable talk they are keen on Ed Richards, whose speed and skill are attractive to recruiters. The Dogs won a premiership 14 months ago with a relatively small forward line but, with Stringer gone, Tory Dickson coming to the end and Clay Smith struggling to recapture his form of last year's finals, they look a bit shallow in that area of the ground too. Jack Higgins has long been identified as a leading candidate for GWS at pick 11, but with other small forwards available for the Giants at later picks he could get through to the Dogs at pick 16. They have been considered as a possible early bidder for Richmond father-son nominee Patrick Naish, although that talk has cooled. Nathan Murphy would be another forward option, but if they don't take him at pick nine it looks likely they will get pipped for his services. It always seems impossible until it's done. Re: 2017 Draft Watch
Its an interesting one with Naughton, we obviously missed out on Lever so the club was keen to get another defender in but at the same time would have been surprised at the late season development of Young. After looking closer at him he did finish top 10 for agility and endurance two traits Daly rates highly and judging by his selections so far he wouldn't be put of by his kicking/technique. He isn't going to be a so called sexy selection but I wouldn't be surprised if we went this way.Last edited by kruder; 20-11-2017, 07:55 PM.Comment

I mentioned on the other thread that even though we probably need run and carry more, if Naughton is clearly the best player then we should take him. AflDraftCentral: Matt Balmer’s 2017 Final AFL Draft Power Rankings Part 2
November 20, 2017 by Matt Balmer
#16 Aaron Naughton
Key Position Defender (Peel/Western Australia)
30/11/19999 | 194.0cm | 85.0kg
Scouting notes: Played as a bottom-ager in two of Western Australia’s NAB AFL Under 18 Championship games in 2016, and was named as a co-captain for the 2017 carnival where he impressed in defence. He marks well overhead and is a good reader of the play. Has an awkward ball drop which can affect his left foot kicking efficiency at times, but mostly it gets where it needs to go. Made his League debut in the WAFL and didn’t looked out of place.
Strengths: Intercept marking, reading the play, mature body, agile
Improvements: Kicking technique
Combine test results: 20m Sprint (secs) – 3.09 | Agility (secs) – 8.22 | Yo-Yo Test (level) – 21.8
#9 Jarrod Brander
Key Position Forward/Defender (Bendigo Pioneers/Allies)
11/02/1999 | 194.6cm | 92.3kg
Scouting notes: Key Position tall that can play at either end where he reads the flight of the ball well. Is mobile up forward which allows him to make multiple leads. Missed most of 2016 through knee injury, but jumped on the scene booting over 20 goals for Geelong Grammar in the 1st XVIII competition as a Year 10 in 2015. Doesn’t look out of place in defence after playing there for the AFL Academy – as well as collecting 26 disposals in defence in the APS v AGSV school boy game last year. Was originally zoned to GWS but it is now ineligible for GWS to select him under changes to their Academy zone. Best swingman in the draft – with healthy debate which end he best plays his football.
Strengths: Mobility, set shot goalkicking, versatile
Improvements: Consistency
Combine test results: 20m Sprint (secs) – 3.11 | Agility (secs) – 8.40 | Yo-Yo Test (level) – 21.1

Re: 2017 Draft Watch
I think there needs to be a longer term view. First, my assumption. West, Khamis, Kellett & Ollie Liberatore take up a huge chunk of points and we have little up the pointy end of the draft. That's three midfielders and a mid size fwd/def.I mentioned on the other thread that even though we probably need run and carry more, if Naughton is clearly the best player then we should take him. Had we traded pick 9 for Lever would the same objections still be as strong?
So I think the consensus is that we only have too many back man if we draft Naughton not if we traded for Lever
If that's the assumption we are working on, we won't be drafting top end KPPs for a few years. So an argument can be made for Naughton on that basis. But the flip side is Morris and probably Roberts both have to go next year leaving 5 KPDs (Cordy, JT, Adams, Collins & Naughton) and 4 KPFs (Boyd, Schache, Young, Redders). And if Roughy can't nail down the ruck position, he can't add to the KPP numbers front or back, so he plays VFL or explores his free agency status.
So the core of the post is the opening assumption, but a genuine argument can be made for it as long as we genuinely believe the assumption and JMac irons out the over balance next year. But from that WA news article he wants to play for Collingwood apparently.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment
