BT, what are the implications for our chances of getting pick four if that is the case?
Say they have Pick 3 too.

    Us: 11 & 18-19

    Them: 15 & 20

    Our Points: 250-300 better off.

Plus GCS can re-sell our Pick 11 for a lot more than 15.

This is much better news. If true we are maybe back in pole position. The question is only the media comments about our F1 going out with something coming back. And the seperate and parallel comments about Hollands being on the trade table.

I could see WCE liking it.

            SEN:

            Gold Coast’s pick 4

“There’s a clear front-runner now and it’s the Western Bulldogs. They’ve got picks 10, 17 and 36, which gives the Gold Coast Suns what they want.

“This doesn’t mean that Melbourne or Adelaide or any other club is completely out of it, but I do think it is the Dogs’ to lose now and I think there’s an acknowledgement from the Suns that the Dogs are the frontrunners, too.”

              ANOTHER YEAR FOR BULLDOG

OUT-of-contract Western Bulldogs veteran Taylor Duryea is set to play on for a 15th season.

The 32-year-old is yet to sign a new deal but is understood to have been given the indication an extension will be finalised in the coming weeks.

Duryea has played 74 games in red, white and blue since moving from Hawthorn at the end of 2018, including 20 in 2023

The small defender won two premierships at the Hawks during his 118-game career at Waverley Park and needed only eight more appearances to reach 200 games.

Hayden Crozier is also yet to secure a contract for 2024 but the former Docker might remain at the Whitten Oval.

The 29-year-old was limited to just four senior games this year due to injury but is keen to play on.

Carlton is understood to have had some interest in the event Crozier is delisted, while other clubs are monitoring his contract status.

Toby McLean also remains unsigned for next season after playing 11 games across the past three seasons. ? Josh Gabelich

Not surprised that Duryea will get a deal. We don't have a lot of options to cover him at the moment.

Awesome. Duryea, Keath & Croz in the back half. Bring on 2024!

Re-signing Doc wouldn't be nearly as concerning if we actually had an understudy for his role.

We are going to have to need it. It’s one thing to say let’s have depth (Keath) or there’s no one else (Duryea). But their age isn’t a surprise, how have we allowed ourselves to get the point where the best option is keeping clearly cooked footballers for longer than they should be?

If Keath is going to keep being the outlet kicker from defence, we are screwed. If Duryea wants to keep breaking tackles that he can’t anymore, then we are in trouble. The argument for re-signing them is very different to the argument of what the hell he’ll have we been doing with our list such that it’s the least worst option?

That we have not cut Crozier and allowed him the freedom to go to any club with DFA status is concerning. Being a good club man and taking up a spot next year again are different things.

I have a fear the list (less fringe players who don’t play seniors anyway, Sweet etc) will look much the same, the key footy off field appointments will be the same and our strategy is genuinely to tinker and ‘hope’ for different results. Hope is a good thing (rebellions are built on it) but it’s not really doing it for me.

For a more fulsome explanation. I think we are in genuine no man’s land. If we are apparently a potential top 4 team with tinkering, then go sell our picks for players and win a flag. If we need to rebuild. Then do it properly. I fear that if we merely tinker and in 12 months time we haven’t seen some vast improvement, we will have missed 12 months of rebuilding and wasted another season if our aging stars such that they might not be around for the next tilt. If we go backward next year, well then clearly the club needs to cleaned out completely for failing to see need for real change. Add to that we will try to sign all our bigger name players to whatever price and we are copying the Collingwood playbook that saw them implode.

I hope in a few weeks things look a lot better. But right now, I’m genuinely concerned about us sleep walking off a cliff. Obviously I hope I’m dead wrong. But I’m really struggling with what we are trying to do on and off field.

Yeah, this off-season has a very similar vibe to last. In 2022 we tinkered hoping we were still top 4. We failed dismally. It feels like we're now trying to do the exact same again for just 1 more season in some sort of hope it'll all magically work out. 2023 was the last straw for mine. We've been here before. It hasn't worked. Time for a completely new approach.

I love that the cupboard's so bare that keeping a bloke who's visibly slowing and will be 33 next season remains a priority.
