    Re: 2023 List Management Thread

Just watching VFL prelim GC v Boxhill. If we are dealing with GC I would be enquiring about Ned Moyle. His ruck craft looks quite sound and considering Sweet is on the move, I hope we are looking at ruck coverage. He's 21, 206cm and 104kg.
They've done studies you know, 60% of the time, it works every time!

What is your plan for this period?
So the extra challenge for us is it seems like we put a lot of emphasis on making a run in the finals this year with bringing in 2 more experienced guys in Lobb and Jones to what was an already fairly experienced team. With Macrae should some signs that he is struggling with the demands of the game and the age and injury challenge for Treloar and given Liberatore could start to slow down where will it leave us if we again struggle next season?
Yes we could address it next year but then we will likely have to wait until the 2024 draftees have some time to develop or could we get inventive and try and get some players in a year earlier and start to fast track their development?

Could we move up the order to select one of McKercher, Watson or Sanders and if no bid came for Croft by pick 13/14 could we trade back into the draft using a F1 and target the likes of Wilson or Windsor? We then match the bid for Croft using the Brisbane 2nd round pick and whatever we get for Sweet or Khamis etc? We could even then take a flyer on Lual if he was still there or perhaps someone like Nathan Philactides? I'm a big fan of Freijah so I hope he is on our radar.

We don't have a great hand but I'm more comfortable with the 'bring them in now' philosophy than wait and see.

The issue with trading the F1 is if we implode next year. Give up maybe pick 6-7 for 14 this year.

I really hope we manage to trade up the draft board and manage to land McKercher. Then take Croft and two more players later in the draft.
Nothing solid but gut feel Bailey Smith is going to request a trade and then game on with drafting two top ten picks plus Croft.

There is of course a risk but if we implode next year then it's essentially rebuild time and we need to run with it.
We should be looking to get players in now even though Power and Milesi might not want to chance it.

2017 is a bust - with only Naughton and richards long term prospectd
2018 - limited time onfield with Garcia, West and VDM
Covoid may be a factor with player development but the rest oof the comp had same challenges
Our rookies really have not worked out in the last 4 years other than Gardner and Scott.
We need to find a ROOKIE mid like Newcomb somewhere ???

Clarke really does show glimpses of talent, he just needs time (and to echo your sentiments about tank, perhaps 2-3 pre-seasons).
Gallagher will play senior football next year, whether it's a couple of games or more.
Agree with Clarke. He is a footballer not an athlete. Very smart football brain and once he gets a full pre season and some strength and conditioning you will find he will play a lot of 1's.

But he's not freakishly talented enough to have gotten by on that alone to this point. That's not to say he's not super talented, but I reckon he'd have put a fair bit of work in during his later junior years.

He just needs to put in the work.

It's going to be hard for Smith and his manager to request a trade this year as they've come out and denied it but if it did eventuate then I assume Geelongs first round pick and some else perhaps a 3rd rounder or future picks comes into play.
Not ideal but if it eventuates it's draft currency to use in what Power believes is a good draft.
I wouldn't in anyway want to lose him but it could open up some possibilities.

Can you get by in that role just being a footballer and not an athlete in a half forward/forward pocket in modern footy?

In the game last night the high forwards that impacted the game were Bedford (Elite speed), Daniel’s (Elite Speed and Agility) and Rioli (Elite agility and at least looks fast on a footy field - not sure his actually quick though). I really can’t think of any small forwards that don’t have some elite athletic traits, maybe Gryan Miers and Jack Higgins.

I have been incredibly frustrated the last couple of year that we have not tried to trade in one of these types. A creative small forward has been a list hole for longer than we have waited for a developed ruck.

We've tried to draft them - Weightman is more Elliot than small forward, and Cavarra didn't work out.

I don't think it's any secret that we were very keen on Pickett as well but Melbourne trumped us.
Could we even be looking at Nick Watson this year to help fill that role?

Paul Connors is the slipperiest of all the player managers. I really believe he said what he said to quieten all the talk down and he normally gets what his player wants. I hope I’m wrong as Smith will be key cog to rebound in 2024.

I'm stupidly confident that he will just leave at the end of next year, if we don't ship him out this year for top dollar.

But the hope would be that a team comes at us this year with a huge offer, to get ahead of the out of contract feeding frenzy next year.
