Re: 2023 List Management Thread
I’m not sure how we are trading in players with next to no mid range picks at this point. Once we upgrade we will work our backside off getting points for Croft (including Sweet & Khamis for points). That will take most if not all picks.
So unless we are trading others, not yet made public, I’m not sure how we can trade anyone in without trading future picks. How do you propose we upgrade to Watson, pay for Croft and have the types of picks needed to trade for players?Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

Re: 2023 List Management Thread
It's starting to become clear on our plan if what is being said is true (it took a while
). Trade up with GC and the rest of the picks eaten up on Croft bid. 2 picks is looking likely unless we move someone off the list out of left field which doesn't seem likely.

Re: 2023 List Management Thread
Not necessarily hamstrung, we may just need to use future picks to get our trading done. Unless some other players request trades (beyond Buku & Sweet) and we can use their picks. But at this point, Watson & Croft (maybe Lual if he gets passed 40) is our predominant draft hand with maybe a late pick. Which exhausts all our picks. So to trade, we need some more picks this year or next.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

I don't think the trade in strategy works. It needs to be an 80/20 split - 80% draft and 20% trade/free agency.I’m not sure how we are trading in players with next to no mid range picks at this point. Take St.Kilda as an example a few years ago they traded in a bunch of players (D.Howard, Ryder, B.Hill, Z.Jones, Butler who got them the sugar hit and they played finals the year after but they haven't really progressed since.
Only in recent times have they start looking at younger players who are starting to pay dividends - Owens, Wanganeen-Millira, Phillipou, Camaneti.More of an In Bruges guy?Comment

That does kind of feel like the scenario and makes sense when you factor in where a Croft bid might come.BT COME BACK!

It's too much. They've also fluffed quite a few high draft picks (put in Petracca, Naughton and Bont ahead of McCartin, Billings, Clark & Coffield)Western Bulldogs: 2016 PremiersComment

Re: 2023 List Management Thread
I put up the math the other night, it?s exactly the scenario. What we also need to factor in is say 6 main list vacancies to take in enough picks with points. We can do the rookies after the ND, so right now it?s three vacancies (Bruce, Hannan & TOB). Sweet & Khamis takes us to 5. Say we trade in two players and a ruckman. Then we are back to two main list vacancies. Now we have to find four players to go from/all: McLean, Croz, Bedendo & Duryea
If we want to sign one of them, we could look at a ruck via SSP/DFA or state league. Or maybe dropping the Melbourne 4th if the points are slim to none. We could rebalance the list to give us another main list spot. Taking a spot from the rookie list. We will have four vacancies in the rookie list shortly, so that could be an option.
The six vacancies then hopefully look like Watson, Croft, Lual, late pick, rookie upgrade Scott & ? (I?m against doing it, but maybe upgrading McNeil/Roarke). I really don?t want to elevate McNeil and Roarke?s body is shot, but if if we can?t do 5 vacancies, and it?s 6. With Power saying 4 picks at most, that means potentially two rookie upgrades or holding open a space for a later DFA/SSP or similar. But with the amount of games gifted to McNeil this year, I suspect the club might look at him as the best player for the last spot. I?d disagree.
Get excited about maybe Watson & Croft because after that it?s slim pickings. Trades seem to be not huge names and involve probably future picks. In the case of Lohmann, Brisbane would want a future pick for Ashcroft II next year anyway I reckon.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

Re: 2023 List Management Thread
I think there is late talent available - outside of Twomey's mooted top 30 you get names like De La Rue, Lual, McAuliffe, Sanchez, Shoenmaker, Anastopolos (forgive spelling)
That's a fair spread across the ground.Western Bulldogs: 2016 PremiersComment

Re: 2023 List Management Thread
Might be a bit of a 'wait until after trade period' for some guys too. I suspect Buks moves on for more opportunity, Hawks were rumoured to have a little bit of interest in McLean (FA?) and I suspect Crozier looks elsewhere too. Sweet probably attracts interest - WCE at least, and whoever out of Port/Swans/Geelong miss out on GrundyWestern Bulldogs: 2016 PremiersComment
