Re: Dogs Keen on Jack Martin in Mini Draft
Is this a serious concern?
We took Cooney and Griffen from SA...that has worked out fine. We took Ward from Spotswood and he went to GWS.
I hate this mentality. If the club does everything right then why would the players want to leave? Particularly with Martin who would be moving from Broome via Geraldton...it is not like Perth is home for him.
Ward as an exception purely because the GWS offer was extraordinary. In the main our track record of keeping interstate players from all over the country is heathy - obviously Cooney and Griffen already mentioned. Here's a few to keep the faith:
1. Hargreaves (WA)
2. Hahn (QLD)
3. Minson (SA)
4. Lake (SA)
5. Darcy (SA)
6. Southern (WA)Comment

Re: Dogs Keen on Jack Martin in Mini Draft
I do, especially with indigenous players. I know that's a bit of a generalisation, but just last year we lost Hill, Stack, and before that Harbrow because they wanted to be close to family. If Martin is from the North of Australia, he may have to be managed exceptionally well. I believe Skinner has had homesickness.FFC: Established 1883

FIrst off, Harbrow left for $ - pure and simple. He has received a free pass with the whole 'I want to be close to family' stuff, but he is from FNQ. It is the difference between a 2 hour and 4 hour plane trip...it is not as if he can drive back home on his day off because he is playing with the Suns.
Secondly, Hill and Stack left under the "Cannot play" rule - one traded to West Coast and one other who has spent time playing reserves for Perth (8th on the ladder) in the WAFL this year...it wasn't as if we had Jimmy and Phil Krackouer running around.
Third - Martin is incredibly well adjusted and will have no trouble fitting in wherever he goes. What should I tell her? She's going to ask.Comment

Re: Dogs Keen on Jack Martin in Mini Draft
I don't want to spend a 1st and second round pick in a "superdraft" year drafting a WA player who may well choose to go home at a later date. Happy to take the two best available with picks 5 and 6. We need to rebuild quickly and I'm sick of trying to be clever based on the failure of our drafting since the 1999 draft which was awe-sooome. Can we just get some more quality midfielder in the mould of Wallis and Dahlhaus? Keep it simple - lets not muck around. Alternately I'm happy to trade one of those for a mini draft slot but that's about it.Comment

I can't agree with that stuff.

JARROD Harbrow will not have to wait long to learn if Western Bulldogs fans are a forgiving lot.
Gold Coast is scheduled to play the Bulldogs in its second game next season and Harbrow needs no reminding.
blah blah blah:
He was particularly peeved about reports he was heading to the Suns because of the massive pay rise on offer.
"It got blown out too much in the paper. It was definitely not about the money ... far from it," he said.
"These things happen all the time. Players move for all sorts of reasons and my reason was pretty legit, I thought I wanted to come back to Queensland to be closer to family and I wanted to be part of a new club."
"The players were supportive. They know what's most important for themselves.
"Looking at my position, they thought going back to Queensland and being close to family was fair enough. They wished me all the best."
Harbrow has moved into a home in Mermaid Beach, south of Surfers Paradise, with his girlfriend Emma, who was based in Brisbane.
After enduring a long-distance relationship, moving closer to her and his parents in Cairns was a factor in Harbrow's decision.

Re: Dogs Keen on Jack Martin in Mini Draft
So why wasn't the cash strapped Brisbane Lions ever in the mix for his services?
I don't doubt for one minute that he wanted to go back to QLD but in reality there was only one team he was prepared to play for and it happened to be they one that could pay the most.Western Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

I wouldnt worry too much about waiting a year until Martin could play. Chances are, unless we get Toumpas or another kid who is already playing against men, any skinny first year kid is going to spend most of his time in the seconds anyway. Certainly not going to be the difference between us challenging for the flag next yearAs long as we can convince him to actually come over and train with us and play for the seconds rather than staying home in WA for the whole year.
Still hoping for a Toumpas / Martin double draft this year. Somebody up there make it happen, we deserve it!Comment

Re: Dogs Keen on Jack Martin in Mini Draft
What do the stats say about aboriginal players wanting to return to their home state? I think its an extra risk but I would have no clue as to how big a risk it is. Particualrly for Jack Martin himself. Probably the more skilled the kid, the less likely he is to struggle to make an impact, and the less likely he is to want to go home.
