Re: Recent CDs bought & your reviews

I recently picked up the latest offering from Cold Chisel, titled "No Plans". After the sad passing of drummer Steve Prestwich at the beginning of the year, I was a bit hesitant (didn't go see them on tour, feeling it wouldn't be the same), but I thought I'd at least give it a shot - and Steve played on some of the tracks before his passing. Overall, a good effort from the Aussie rock legends, still in form. Don Walker's talent as a songwriter is still immense, Barnesy still sings with everything he's got (and judging on recent photo/video, has been in a good paddock ) whilst Mossy's playing and singing is as good as ever. Highlights for mine: the rock 'n' roll "HQ 454 Monroe", ballad "All For You", and a bluesy "Our Old Flame". New drummer Charley Drayton (married to the Pretenders' Chrissie Amphlett) is good too. I can't help feeling it's "not the same" but still, four-fifths of the Chisels is better than none.

Re: Recent CDs bought & your reviews

I just went crazy on ITunes with mainly my Shazam entries.
Some of the stuff is recent
Total Control - any one that likes eddy current suppression ring should like them. Mikey the guitarist of both bands is one of the best going around locally.
      Twerps - another local
I like whar ive heard from the British band Django Django
      Pop Levi
      Hunx and his punx
Mark Lanengan has been around a while but has a great style/voice

      Few others if your interested.

Re: Recent CDs bought & your reviews

Finally got around to it but a little summary on my most recent purchases:

Future of the Left - The Plot Against Common Sense, has taken me a little longer to get into than previous efforts and definitely is a change of pace in some aspects. The bile has been toned down slightly or maybe Falco is just delivering it more subtly. Julia's bass stars on a few songs but it feels a little long and a couple of songs feel a bit more like filler. Still some fine work and nobody will top "Robocop 4 - *!*!*!*! off Robocop" for a song title this year

The Hives - Lex Hives, I'm going to go against Chef here and proclaim my total enjoyment of this album. Have gone back to a fairly traditional Hives sound with some glam rock stomp thrown in after the "Black & White" album saw them spread their wings and fly straight into the sun. Particularly enjoy the mid album combo of Patrolling Days and Take Back the Toys

Japandroids - Celebration Rock, is hands down the best beers in the air, singalong, whoa whoa backing vocals, rock album of the year. 8 songs largely about looking back on the party days of yore with some excellent lyrics thrown in. The 2nd half is particularly awesome. "Continous Thunder" feels like it should be played through a ghetto box held by a teenage John Cusack standing outside your window. As a guitar/drums duo they do a reasonable variety of sounds and also there a bunch of pretty good extras on the album including a cover of Big Black's "Racer-X"

El-P - Cancer4Cure, has probably got the least of my attention so am still partly reserving judgement, but seems pretty strong and single "The Full Retard" is working it's way into my head.

I'm 36, it's not like I'm a spring chicken. There's a whole internet out there full of music that has never been easier to access and while it can be hard to find diamonds in the shit, it can make it all the more fulfilling. It also doesn't change that I've got Kinks albums sitting in my Amazon cart waiting to be bought.

So what you're telling me is that I need to stop listening to 80's classics??

Normally I'd say listen to whatever you enjoy, but in your case I'll just say, yes

I definitely believe there is better music in the alternative than in the mainstream (whatever that is) right now. I respect artists/bands that make money if they keep there musicial integrity in tact and are rewarded for their great talents. If they are just in it for the money and are willing to sacrifice their musical integrity then they are just sellouts and these are the ones we hear about all the time over artists that actually make good music, make money from it and keep their musicial integrity.

Thought I better get the new Shins album given I'm seeing them in a week - probably not quite as good as Wincing the Night Away, though Port of Morrow has some great moments. Really looking forward to seeing them

I bought the new Titus Andronicus album today, "Local Business". Their previous album "The Monitor" was my favourite album of a couple of years at least bordering on an obsession. This one narrows their focus and probably doesn't quite live up to the hopes for it but I'm still digging it, although I can guarantee it won't be for everyone (especially if you can't get past the vocals). Think a Poguesish Replacements if that helps.
This article reviews them way better than I could and is some fine ass rock journalism for those who appreciate that kinda thing.

Here's a couple of vids for songs from the allbum including them playing a song in a local New Jersey business as part a 4 song series for Pitchfork

I've bought a few things lately but I'll get to the rest later.

New Soundgarden album - gets off to a cracking start, then fades through the second half. I'll keep giving the album in full a chance over the coming weeks, but even if the final call is only 7-8 songs I like, that's 7-8 new Soundgarden songs I like.

Very happy they got back together - just brilliant live too

Loving 'My Head is an Animal' by Of Monsters and Men - an indie type of band. If you like your alternative/indie music you will love this Icelandic 6 piece band. They also happen to be touring in Feb at the Palace, which I better organize asap so I don't miss out!
