Gave up trying to save for a deposit in Australia. Came to China. Saving about three times a month what I could in Geelong. There are some cons, but mostly pluses.

Are you saving to buy in Australia or China.?
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Australia. The part of China I am in is more expensive than Aus. When you buy a place here, all you get is a concrete box. No light fittings, taps, tiles nothing. The price of fitting it out is equal to the price of your mortgage.

GD, I've read you talking about living in China a few times. Can you elaborate a bit more on what you're doing and what your daily life is like? Seems very interesting.

On another note I went to masters today bought 24sq metres of Vinyl clip lock floor boards cost $900 10% discount and I'm a Woolworths employee another 10% off again ended up paying $720.
I layed click system floorboards about 15 years ago, it wasnt appropriate for wet areas back then, but now it's vinyl and looks like floorboards it's perfect for them areas and so easy to lay and cut just using a Stanley knife. Totally recommend them.

I'm with you. We're about to renovate our place and have been looking at these. They look really good when laid and are really hard wearing. Post some pics when you're done.

I am odds in to have been doing something illegal at least one of the times I've seen those plates.

I live in West Footscray. Congrats on the house mate. I remember when I bought mine being pretty happy with myself. It's gone now and I am back renting but such is life.

Re: What are you doing at the moment?

Just finished cleaning up after a bit of a two on two dinner with a couple that have excellent taste in wine. Started on whites, some sweeter stuff and nice cheeses, and then hit up some Angus sirloin cooked on gidgee charcoal Eisenhower style which is something I've never tried before - and was an experience or massive learning curve.

Essentially, that style of grilling (if you could call it that) relies on you preparing the charcoal to a point where it's very very hot, and chucking massive hunks of meat right on it. We had a spice rub that was a bit heavy on the oil for half of it, and resulted in a bit too much smoke, whilst we also had a simple light olive oil, salt and pepper rub on the other half. That half turned out a lot better. After about nine minutes on the charcoal, all but one piece (which was smaller) required a whirl in the oven for five or so minutes.

Good result. Next time I'll use a dry rub at most if I decide to go beyond the normal seasoning with a touch of olive oil. The outcome is a nice crust and smokey flavour (ours was over smoked in bits and pieces due to the oily rub and ensuing flames) and slices of beef that melt in your mouth, but also have that outdoor style. Coupled with the pumpkin and roquette salad with balsamic glaze my salad master partner put together and the perfect match of heavy and light was on the plate.

Matched with Exile 2009 Barossa, and Cape Metelle 2012 Margaret River shiraz's and it was heaven.

Finished off with some nice Pedro Ximenez, Stanton and Killeen Topaque - and 16 y.o. Lagavulin single malt and it's been a very good night.

                    Yep, I'm a bit of a wanker.

Jeemak the trick to charcoal cooking is no flames. I must admit I haven't mastered it myself. My father was very good at charcoal BBQ (it's in the blood, being of Turkish decent). He says the best wood was from Olive trees. I just use crummy old Red Head charcoal. If anyone knows where to get the best charcoal, I would love to know. Where do you buy the Gidgee from, I have never tried it.

PS: Sounds like a great dinner.

Agree wholeheartedly on the flames, and I'm normally OK. It just happened to be the type of rub I used that made the flaming and smoke over the top.

BBQ's plus on Graham Street near the corner of Williamstown Road in Port Melbourne has a couple of different types of charcoal for around $50 each for about 20kg's. They seem to know their stuff there.

You can make your own charcoal. All you need is 48 hours a pile of wood and a match. And something to keep you awake to stoke the wood pile regularly.

That's where I bought all my bbq equipment from and found them good to deal with. They seemed a lot more genuine than the guys at BBQPlus Highpoint who lied to me a few times when I was researching just to try to sell me what they had in stock rather than having to order.

Essentially my father chopped up some olive tree branches, threw them on the BBQ and let it burn down to charcoal and cooked over the top ( on a grill).
