BT's very, very, very, very early list management thread 2019-2020

Grain of salt, online. I assume we're one of the six.
I'm actually not bothered by the off field stuff - being delisted surely frightens him straight. I simply don't think he can get on the paddock. I'd take an ACL ahead of a guy with multiple, cronic, calf injuries.
OT, but I suspect this is Suckling's last season for the same reason.

Simple now. Is Dickson or a particular DFA the better bet next year and beyond, we will soon find out.

I'd be leaning towards one more year for Dickson. He'll play some games, knows our structures, and we will look to move a few players on for list spots next year anyway. Halfway through the season I wouldn't have said so, but he finished well.

With AFEL.com.au reporting Webb, Roberts & Roarke not offered a contract (as of today) and Gardner now completely redundant. And surely a preference to elevate La Young than use Pick 89. If that's all correct:
That only leaves the question of Dicko vs any DFA. Sweet & Khamis as rookies for next year. That affords us two rookie draft picks (12 & 30 - or one pick 12 & one SSP option) with our two national draft picks (13 & 53). Fresh blood with the maturity of Bruce & Keath.

Is there maybe more logic to keeping Young for next year? We might need list spots open to use draft picks for points with the FS/academy kids (lets say 5 as a spitball) and once the 3/4 of them are bid on any pick left will be super late so maybe Young could be a good upgrade then? Much of a muchness I suppose if 89 does end up being our 3rd pick.

Not for me. Say Dicko plays on and retires with Suckling (2). Then Lynch, Porter, Jong, Gowers, Greene (if injuries occur again), Cavarra (ditto) (6) are in the frame as a total pool (8 in the frame as outs). That's probably 6 list movements out next year without any bigger names requesting a trade out. Of those 6 spots, four come from JUH, Macca, Stevens & Raak. If I had my way, Zac Williams as a free agent is the fifth. That gives us 5 picks to take in and running a deficit into 2021. Then it's just one spot to potentially fill with a state leaguer, a kid or upgrade Buku Khamis or another rookie.
One thing the afl regulations don't make crystal clear is the impact of upgrading rookies on list spots as they count towards draft points. That is there's the rule about list spots and draft picks you can take in to avoid 'hidden picks'. But you have to advise the AFEL in advance of the draft of the intent to upgrade a rookie. Do they then immediately remove that last pick and what if it has points? I read and re-read the regulations and it's not painfully clear to me. Assuming our fifth pick had no points, then we can upgrade Khamis which I'd do. But if we split our first next year into say 2 X 2nds, then our fifth pick would be a fourth rounder and we'd lose the points maybe? If anyone knows the actual answer please let me know. I've given up on it.
Back to pick 89, unless there's something we really like and we don't think they'll get through to the rookie draft pick 12, I'd prefer to put La Young into that list spot. Rather than tie up two years of a list spot into a statistical outsider to make it.

Looking at AFEL.com.au , they have the current unsigned names. In the small forwards category:
Jacob Townend - 28.9 across 15 games in 2017 & 2018. Premiership player, 26yo, just one game this year for Richmond.
Cody Hirst - Swans mid season rookie draftee. They're saying with Taylor coming in does he go? A talented 19yo kid, athletic freak and good goal sense. Feel because of injury in his draft year.
Sam Gray - much known. Good career numbers.
All three above, like Tippa & Papley, were rookie draft selections. Maybe we should rookie draft a small forward or two.

Not so much a forward but Ben Keays is unsigned. Wonder if we are still interested in him, as from memory we did bid on him prior to bidding on Josh Dunkley. Another sliding doors moment.

averaged 3 goals a game in the NEAFL this year incl 4 in the GF. So he has probably changed his game a bit from his earlier days.

AFEL.com.au reporting our club is having a post trade period list management meeting on Monday (hopefully we find out soon after). Assuming for decisions on:
Whether to upgrade La Young at the national draft
Main listers uncontracted: Dickson, Roberts, Webb (at least two need to go)
Rookie listers uncontracted: Roarke & Gardner

I was interested in Keays earlier this year but he got given a chance in the AFL as a small forward twice this year and looked a million miles off it both times.

Tory is a proven goalscorer, I would love to see one more season from him working with our 3 pronged talls. I just reckon he could be the ingredient that makes it hard for opposition defenses to collectively match up and contain our entire forward line options.
I wonder if the Naughton, Bruce, Schache set up allows Tory to even extend his career beyond just next season.
