Where does Mitch Wallis fit into our plans for 2020, even though he has 2 years left on his current deal?
More of an In Bruges guy?

We've been saying this about Mitch since before he debuted. One thing we can be sure of is that Mitch will never stop until he finds a spot in the team.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

You know what Twodogs, you’ve said a lot of things on this forum but none closer to the mark than this.

Was going to post something similar. Particularly if we recruit another mid, say Martin, he’s not a best 22 mid. I think he’d be a good mid sized forward but that’s not where he sees himself. If he stayed as a forward, then what to do with Bailey Dale? He’s at a much higher trade value than two weeks ago. I can’t see why GCS or Lions would be ‘off’ Mitch. Thought provoking.

There is nothing wrong with the side being strong enough to keep good players out. We have tonnes of injuries every season - so I wouldn't be too worried about where every player fits in the '22'.

Plenty of teams out there have fallen short by overloading their 22, or spending huge dollars on their best 8-10, and when injuries come along they drop off severely.

GCS in particular should be throwing everything at Wallis. He is the type of leader and player the club desperately needs.

Well...if they need him don't we need him?

I know there is a bit of an obsession with 'roles' sometimes - but the fact that Wallis can both play solid minutes in the mids and contribute as a forward should be thought of as a GOOD thing!

The thing everyone needs to understand is that the term 'Best 22' is a transitory one - and kind of refers to the 22 who are in form 'right now'. Mitch isn't best 22 right at the moment - but he is battling back from injury. Earlier in the year he was a walk-up selection.

If his leadership is strong (and everyone says it is) and his behaviours are positive (and everyone says they are) then why would we get rid of him? And if we recruit another mid-forward (and the Jack Martin thing has been mentioned) then so what? Jack Martin being on the list only influences one person - Jack Martin. The make-up of the 22 will be determined by the coaches/mc based on who is playing their role/competing hard/living the team trademark.

6-weeks ago if you had said to be Bailey Williams would be back in the VFL and Bailey Dale would be coming off back to back games in the seniors (I mean, how the hell did he get back in after the way he performed earlier this year???) where he kicked 5 goals and 4 goals, well, I would have said you were crazy. But that's what has happened.

The 22 in pretty much every side is going to consist of 12-14 players who are selected 'every week'...and another group of about 15-18 players who are in or out based on form and fitness....if they play well enough for long enough, they can become part of the 12-14 - but even that is USUALLY at the expense of someone who WAS part of the 'core' who is 'pushed out' of that group (even if no-one really realises it has happened).

I think Wallis is important. At worst he is depth - and good teams need that. At best he is a versatile player who can win a stoppage, kick a goal and play a defensive role on an opposition mid. Sounds pretty good to me - sign him up! (And yes, I know he still has 2-years to go).
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

spot on mjp. At worst he is our 25th player. You don't get rid of that player easily.

I love Mitch he gives his all and is up to AFL standard, his problem is he seems to get injured at times when he has cemented his spot in the team.
We have seen him beat players one out in the forward line with his body work, he has great football instinct and wouldn’t be one I would not want to leave.
We have young ones coming up and he is great teacher and role model.
He might not be elite but he is a workhorse, has a very good tank and will get amongst the hard stuff.
                      Underestimated in my opinion.

There's something to be said to showing loyalty to players who re-sign in the face of objectively better offers elsewhere. Trading Wallis would send a horrible message to the rest of the group.

Before Mitch's injury, I thought he was having a very good year. He has changed his body shape and was fit as a fiddle.

NO way we trade out Mitch.

Kerstan? Just parted ways with Freo. Tallish utility, not sure he'd leave WA though.

Isn't he good friends with Hamling? Happy to recruit him to Footscray if he brings Joel back with him.

Concerned about his foot injury, that's often career altering. He's also not very good to begin with anyways.
