Of the other clubs involved in Next Gen, we've got one of the smallest contingents.
I wonder if that is as a result of the draft rule changes impacting our commitment, or just the luck of the draw?

Pretty sure nga and father son guys are attached for two years hence why Ryan is eligible. Although I guess that should mean McPherson is too so who knows.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

Pretty sure i read something last week that had Ewan Macpherson still listed as a Father son prospect for us in 2021.
        Hope this is the case.

Cody Raak had 31 touches and 9 marks playing in defence for the Jets in their win yesterday. A draft watcher on BF said he was likely BOG, kicking the ball nicely (29 kicks) and lots of intercepts.
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

NAB League 2021: Western Jets beat Calder Cannons as Cody Raak fires

Western Jets survived a fightback from Calder Cannons to register a narrow victory in a tense NAB League season opener on Saturday with top prospect Cody Raak delivering a standout display.

The Jets led by 23 points at the main break after booting five goals to one in the first half at Craigieburn’s Highgate Reserve.

The visitors were restricted to one major in the second half, but prevailed by three points, 6.6 (42) to 5.9 (39) in the first official match since 2019 in the state’s elite underage competition.

“I thought our first half was terrific. The boys looked slick, looked on and put into practice a lot of things that they’d be training,” Jets talent manager Luke Williams said.

“I was really happy for them that they clicked from the start of the game.

“Obviously to Calder’s credit, they regrouped and made it the game we expected. There were no surprises there with their comeback.

“Still plenty of things to work on, but all in all it was a good day for the club and the league.”

Next Generation Academy member Raak, who trained with the Western Bulldogs this year, was best afield.

The 18-year-old Caroline Springs product racked up 31 disposals in defence, showcasing his ability to intercept mark and read the play.

“He was very reliable in defence,” Williams said.

“Cody and the defenders as a whole took it upon themselves to back themselves in, read the play and play with a bit more flair.

“He typified that with having that many disposals and intercept marks.

“It was a fantastic performance, and he used the ball really well by foot as well. It was great for him to show all of his attributes in the first game.”

Raak has relished his move to the backline as he looks to stake his claim for a spot at AFL level.

Williams said the 192cm Raak was earning the rewards of his hard labour.

“He played forward for Vic Metro as a 16-year-old and started as a forward with us,” he said.

“But that defensive post he’s playing now seems quite natural to him from when we moved him there in the middle of the 2019 season.”

So, with the new ruling, do we still get access to Raak?

Not if he's selected in the first 20 picks.

So, he gets past pick number twenty and we can then have priority? If this is the case, do we tell him to fake an injury now and not play the rest of the season and we take him with our first pick after twenty? (Obviously this is based on the fact that he is that good ... I don't know, I've never seen him play)

Given the fact not a single team wanted him last draft period, even for the rookie list, it seems unlikely that he would suddenly rocket into top 20 considerations, especially playing as a over age player.

That is aside from the fact that doing what you are suggesting is draft tampering and not at all in the best interests of the player or the club.

I totally get that, but we would not be the first (or last) team to tamper with the draft.

                        Via AFL Draft Central

                        #26 Cody Raak

Considered unlucky not to win a spot with the Western Bulldogs as a Next Generation Academy (NGA) member, Raak was sensational in a best on ground performance down back, playing a similar role to Essendon’s Jordan Ridley in taking some great intercept marks and hurting the opposition with his vision and kicking out of defence. Raak led a well drilled backline for Western who proved hard to get through for the day, conceding under 40 points. Raak had a big say on the result as Calder struggled to get the ball past him. A cool head and efficient with the ball, Raak finished the game with 31 disposals, nine marks and 11 rebound 50s as he stakes his claim for an AFL spot in the mid-season draft.
Don't want to get too excited but a Jordan Ridley type would be nice...

The mid season draft could be a worry if he continues to impress. We will look silly if he is snapped up by someone else and turns out to be a player when we had the opportunity to add him as a category B rookie.

Yeah, we might need to have a word with the kid and take the Lachie Hunter approach with him.

The risk Cody has is winding up at a basket case (ie North) or going interstate. Moreover, most mid season draftees faded into nothing.

I’d think for his development, the best thing for him is to try to dominate this year as an overage kid and not an undersized KPD in the VFL. Not nominating for the MSD. Plus he probably doesn’t go top 20, and we maybe get dibs on him in that case and he stays close to family at a club in a premiership window. We could also be a little generous with his contract.

All that said, he’s an overage kid who has extensively trained with an AFL club, he should be dominating.

Blake Scott is a small forward with the Rebels and part of the Bulldogs NGA. Kicked 2 goals and was very lively in their win on Thursday night.

A draft watcher on BF was impressed:

Blake Scott from the Bulldogs NGA was a real surprise, his bursts of speed in the forward line made him stand out and he really took on the contest and looked great with ball in hand, 2 goals really helped him stand out too
