Is the qualifier for a wasted season anything other than a premiership? Because I suddenly get the feeling I've wasted a lot of my life

Not sure about that but we do need to ensure we finish top 4.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

Depends on where you’re at as a club. Any year we don’t win a flag with a 20-30 year old Bont is wasted, IMO.
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

Really would like us to be more active in recruiting damaging players (i.e. Wingard).

When you look at our forward half, there's some exciting players but who can really turn a game? Naughton yes, Weightman maybe - but still has a way to go. Nobody else is likely to kick 3+ (Bruce is, if we count him).

JJ, Vandermeer, McNeil, Hannan, English etc. offer something different/important but we have room for a Wingard type.

          I agree with the sentiment that given we're so close, it's kind of disappointing we seemingly are happy to go into 2022 with minimal changes when we still have 3 glaring weaknesses;

          1. Ruck
          2. KPD - O'Brien isn't this but he does help
          3. Small forward

If we can't get a ruck, I really want another forward and somebody like Wingard would be worth pursuing.

My concern is Bevo is very loyal to guys like JJ so I can’t see him moving a guy like that against his will.

Surely we have the cap space.
I would take Wingard anytime. Hawks are willing to pay some of his salary, and getting him has nothing to do with JJ. There are other players that need to be moved on - Cavarra, Hayes to name two.

The issue is more, what do they want in return, and how do we get it.

I know for a fact that I've wasted most of my life. The good/bad news is that it had nothing to do with football.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Im not as interested in Wingard - he had his chance to come to us, and I dont know that hes rewarded the Hawks with hugely interested footy. His best is good, but he just doesnt look interested or influential often enough for me.

Is that inferring a season in which you make the grand final was a waste? Tough assessment if so.

I, like many others take issue with this statement but I don't think it's meant literally.

It is not a wasted season if we don't win the flag, but it will be if we go into another season without seriously trying to address the relatively minor deficiencies we have that would greatly assist us to capitalise on the Bont era.

Would it be a wasted year if we don't win? No. Would it be a wasted opportunity? Very much so.

We have removed Jong, Young and Lipinski from the main list. O'Brien goes on.

Martin we assume is going to be downgraded to a rookie, but presumably Sweets extension means he gets upgraded so they effectively swap spots.

Cavarra and Hayes are surely getting delisted but both are rookies so doesn't help open up main list spots.

So we have opened up two list spots, with Wallis the only remaining main listed player remaining out of contract.

We need to use 3 draft picks in the draft, although one can be on Sweet. So we need to cut one player to do that. The other complicating factor is the Darcy bid. We have the picks to match anything really, but the picks only exist if we have a list spot associated with them. So if we manage to find the 3rd list spot we have picks 23, 43 and 44. Which is just short of what Darcy would cost at pick 3 if my calculations are correct. So really we need to find a fourth list spot as well to activate 45.

So where do these two list spots come from?

Does Wallis have to be delisted regardless and we just redraft him?

Can we somehow delay the upgrade of Sweet till after the draft, or maybe he isn't being upgraded at all and is staying a rookie (seems unlikely)?

Does this mean that any player we trade in means someone has to leave hence our reluctance to actually do anything to improve our list beyond O'Brien?

Do we tap someone like Butler or West on the shoulder and ask them to downgrade to rookies or get redrafted by us? Butler only signed an extension a few months ago.

                              Am I missing something?

There's also the story or Roarke Smith, who yet again despite doing everything right and being best 22 in a Grand Final side has yet another list management meeting where we tell him "Thanks mate but we just need you to take this one for the team, but we will look to upgrade you as soon as we can". Imagine having an 8 year AFL career (and not even as a spud tall) and still being no better off financially than most of your school mates.
At the start of the season, our list was : Contracted Players = 42 (35 Primary List, 6 Category A Rookies, 1 Category B Rookie)

Which means we have room on primary list and can just delist rookies.
