How about another barn yard analogy? What comes first - waiting for English to decides where he plays in 2025 or do we invest in a genuine state league ruckman who could lead our ruck division in 2025?

At least when Collingwood moved on Grundy they knew what they had underneath with Cameron and Cox. Unfortunately we do not have that luxury.

Having come to the end of my ramble I don't think we have a choice but to draft a mature ruckman this off season, who has the potential to be a number one ruck
Collingwood have a couple of emerging ruckman on their list in Steene and Begg plus some additional support from Frampton.
We should be looking to add a ruckman but as BT pointed out perhaps we might not see it that way.

Maybe no way, but it is poor planning not to have a developing young ruck on the rookie list - have to think about the future.

I would split the difference. Don't get an almost cooked Lycett type, get an early to mid 20s ruck capable of playing if needed but with hopefully some development left.

It would take a complete change in list strategy for us to add 2 rucks to English, Lobb and Darcy, even if the second 2 are hybrids.

If English leaves there are always at least serviceable rucks available for trade every year. I've heard good things about that Sweet dude from Port... (insert Dude, where's my car? meme)

I like the idea of getting some new players late/rookie supported by our revamped coaching panel.

A ruck (ideally mature who can play AFL and carry the VFL) should be on our list.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Yeah, I can't see us drafting two ruckman even though we probably should consider it but drafting one with some experience but still young enough and with the capacity to improve is a requirement for us.
There are enough ruckman in the various state leagues and a few from the AFL that have been delisted so if we have the mindset to add some additional options we can get it done. With list spots tight at best we might add one ruckman.

Power has already indicated he is looking for a ruckman, so mind set is there

Well he has called the play pretty accurately right through the trade period so I agree there is no real question that we will bring in one.

Pretty sure Power said in an interview a few weeks back we're looking for one. Whether that's a kid or a mature back up for Sweet, who knows.

Could we also move a player or two too the rookie list and have enough spots open to match all the picks/points we need to cover Croft and maybe Lual?
The only one I would be reluctant to lose is Bedendo. Based on talent and potential, though, whereas the real call on him is probably from the medical/fitness staff.

It's a tough one with Bedendo because he is potentially an excellent mark but had a shocking season because of injuries.
Perhaps we could move him to rookie list and hope we can get him fit.

It needs to be a mature player or at least someone who's played at the state level for a couple of years.

I'm not sold on Bedendo and think his unavailability makes him more a tanatalising 'what if' than if we'd seen more of him. A good mark but are the fundamentals there to play a meaningful role on a wing or half back? Not sure they are.

Agree with this. His legend has grown because of eye catching glimpses and an inability to stay on the park. At best he seems a 12 possession per game player at AFL level to me (admittedly I’m basing this off very little).

It's why I'm a position of moving him to the rookie list but also not being too upset if we cut him. He has the intangibles but it doesn't matter if he can't get out there, every game he doesn't play he's more and more of a can't miss talent in the eyes of people that don't really pay attention to the VFL.

The best player on the planet is useless if their body just won't stand up to senior AFL football.
We do tend to underrate role players and overrate 'ceiling' types as fans.
