    Re: 2024 Draft Watch

Does anyone have a player or two that hasn't been mentioned much if at all? A smokie or a bolter or someone that might thrive at the next level?

Here are a couple of names that might not have been mentioned:
Blake Leidler - A versatile defender who tested really well at the state combine. Really quick and a long kick. I'm not sure he gets drafted but he gets a lot of praise from his coach and just has a great attitude. Can provide run and carry and be used as a lock down defender. Played forward, back and in the midfield.

Lucca Grego - I think Doc mentioned him but he's a strong midfielder or defender with excellent defensive skills. Really determined type. His agility test was terrific.

I'll add another couple of other names a bit later.

I am probably wrong but I just can't see teams investing top 30 draft capital in a player who gets it 8x per game.

I guess I agree with your statement that he fits our list - he probably fits EVERY list tbh...really does seem to be a 'high floor' type selection - but I really can't see why someone would take him in the top (3x 18 = 54) 54 selections...like - why would you not try and shoot for the stars with a bit more of a creative type and then TEACH them to defend (I know - I've said before this is a bit problematic) that try to get someone to starting coming out of their shell a little...

I think Oliver is a good user btw - just that he is a bit of a ball stopper - and not so much with slow decisions ball in hand, but in terms to slow spread decisions that clog up the lanes...

Leidler reminds me of Nathan Broad - fast and agile, can play on smalls and go up to 3rd tall range and can kick it.

Broad didn't get drafted out of the champs and played 2x years of senior footy in the WAFL before being selected...the fact that Leidler is a combine test (Nominated by 2-3 clubs in their 50) would mean to me he is rookie at best.

To me he is a bit short to play on 3rd talls but his athleticism and speed are real traits that would meet any AFL expectations.
He had a couple of injury challenges this year which won't have given the clubs much of a chance to view him as they would like but as we know it only takes one club. A rookie list spot seems about right but as I look at this draft for us and knowing that a small defender with very good kicking skills could be on our shopping list and he could be worth a punt. His coach also really spoke well about him.

              At the combine
              Height 180.9
              VJ 68cm
              RVJ_R 74cm
              RVJ_L 78am
              5mtr 1.022
              10mtr 1.739
              20mtr 2.887
              Agility 8.150

Our list is crying out for players with some more athletic traits.
Laidler performed well on the likes of Hannaford and Dattoli this season so has some runs on the board in locking down players

He's certainly got some excellent intel. I think the fact that he knows which teams nominated players for the National and State Combines helps him make more informed decisions. Player managers would pass on info as well plus he would know which clubs nominated the top 20 players for night one of the draft but he has the runs on the board year after year.

Apparently clubs now do some additional interviews and tests late in proceedings and subtly let that be known in the industry as a way of masking their genuine interest in other players so for Cal to navigate through all the head fakes is a credit to him.

I mean I almost won't him to get a few wrong just to add to the intrigue.

The wildcard that could mess up his order would be pick trades. If there end up being a few this year on the night.

From a player sliding perspective I cannot get a handle on if it is better for us if North do not trade pick two and they still reach for Taruru or in the end it does not matter.

Well - either way he ( Taruru) goes before our pick so what difference does it make if North take him?

The more challenging prospect is clubs potentially trading back into the first round with Richmond might trade into next year and potentially the Saints looking to split one of their early selections. How clubs prepare for that would be interesting to know.

Generally his intel lines up with at least the first two rounds of the draft so his phantoms are fairly reliable.

I'd give Gilbee a rookie place. Kids got great foot skills and covers the ground well. We Rookie drafted JJ on less.

                              Re: 2024 Draft Watch

Richmond, North and Carlton should be ashamed if they let Ashcroft slide to pick 4.
The GF team over the last 2 years can't get a further discount on Ashcroft.

Brisbane hopeful Levi Ashcroft slides down order to avoid going into points deficit

Brisbane will be hopeful of a Nick Daicos-style slide down the draft order for Levi Ashcroft as it seeks to take a third draft selection on Wednesday behind the much-hyped father-son and academy mid Sam Marshall.

Richmond, North Melbourne and Carlton have the first three picks in the national draft and are all adamant that they will make a bid for Ashcroft where they have him in their draft order despite his certain move to Brisbane.

Adelaide might end up moving up to the No.2 draft pick but has already shown it will bid on elite talent after the Dogs matched its bid for Jamarra Ugle-Hagan as the No.1 pick in the 2020 national draft.

The league has already warned clubs against any side deals in trades which would see them overlooking players like Ashcroft in the draft in return for preferable treatment in other deals to come.

But there is every chance Ashcroft slides out of the top three selections given the exceptional evenness of that group of midfielders, which has No.1 draft contender Finn O’Sullivan still a chance to slip out of the top eight.

In the 2021 national draft Collingwood was able to use picks 38, 40, 42, and 44 for Daicos after the draft’s most dominant player slid to pick four, where the Suns bid on him.

Instead of having to secure 2400 draft points (pick one is worth 3000 points, plus a 20 per cent father-son deduction), the Pies needed to find only 1627 points for a player who already looks a generational talent.

The Magpies had enough points left over to take Arlo Draper (pick 45), Cooper Murley (pick 49) and Harvey Harrison (pick 52).

Brisbane’s current draft hand is 27, 34, 42, 43, 49, 58, and is cumulatively worth 2650 points in a system where individual draft picks have a points value assigned to them.

A Richmond bid at No.1 for Levi Ashcroft would all but wipe out that draft hand after the Lions matched the selection.

A bid at four or later would still give the Lions enough points to match a second bid on Coates League Grand Final best-afield Sam Marshall, who could be selected in the early 20s.

Brisbane is keen to take a third selection later in the draft, and also has a spot available on its list for delisted free agent Sam Day later in the summer.

The Herald Sun revealed during the trade period he was the club’s first preference to replace the retiring Joe Daniher given his capacity to crash packs up forward and also play second ruck.

Brisbane is only allowed to have as many draft selections as it has open list spots entering draft night under AFL rules.

But it is allowed to make further trades again on draft night so could trade 27 or 34 for multiple later picks to continue accumulating its tally of draft points to match bids on Ashcroft and Marshall.

Trading pick 20 for Richmond’s 32,42,43 and 45 meant it handed over a pick worth 912 points for selections worth 1704 points.

                                Re: 2024 Draft Watch

                                From Code Sports.

Every club’s targets and potential pick swaps ahead of Wednesday night

Blake Leidler who MJP and I have just discussed gets mentioned.

It is unsurprising that the Bulldogs are after smaller types with their first pick given they are well stocked for talls at both ends. The Dogs are in a good spot with three picks in a strong region of the draft, but they are open to moving up the order or sliding back and will likely take four selections.

They have been linked to forward-midfielders Cooper Hynes and Jesse Dattoli – Hynes possessing power and Dattoli a creative ball user – and both could slot in next year for Luke Beveride’s side. Sandringham Dragons duo Murphy Reid and Taj Hotton, and Murray Bushrangers goalsneak Joe Berry would also be right in their thinking if they are still on the board. Reid would add some class to the Bulldogs midfield in time, while Hotton would give their forward-half a point of difference with his electric speed and lateral movement.

Late season bolter Ollie Hannaford, a quick small forward, is another they have shown interest in, but this could be for their selection at 25. They have also done late work on 194cm interceptor Luke Trainor, who could be available at their second pick despite him being in top-10 calculations earlier in the season.

Geelong Falcons co-captain Lachie Jaques, a rebounding defender, is an option for their third pick, while they have also shown interest in his teammate Xavier Ivisic, a smart midfielder-forward, and lightning quick defender Blake Leidler, who could come into their thinking at the back-end.
