    Re: 2024 Draft Watch

I just hope that we pick up a genuine small defender who can stop their opponent, not just someone who plays on the flank and runs off of it. Leidler as a late pick could be alright as they do talk about his ability to win one on ones against dangerous smalls along with his run off the flank.

So to hear that we might take 4 or 5 selections this year is encouraging that we rate some players that are likely to fall a bit later in the draft.

I agree that this year we need to again invest in the draft more than looking for players with some experience elsewhere. 4 or 5 picks would be a good outcome for us.
I?m hopeful it?s 5, as that reduces the chance of two DFA/SSP types. Next year looks a similar number at an early guess. That?s three good years hitting the draft with FS and a tighter system to pull us back in 2026. Twomey has been saying 4-5 picks or at least 4 for a while now, so he must have some mail that if the right player is there we will jump. We cleared the decks a little to free up 6 list spots, so hopefully there?s someone we?ve got an eye on that makes it to our fifth pick.

            Boxshall / Jacques / Gross
            Leidler / Ivisic

Draft picks: 17, 25, 35, 48, 83, 90 (likely to use four or five selections)

The Dogs will use as at least four picks across both nights of the draft and there should be some quality options available at their third live pick. Midfielder Hugh Boxshall, who has some Josh Dunkley traits in his size and strength, could be around the mark as will half-back Lachie Jaques, who has been linked to clubs in the second round. Runner Hamish Davis and midfielder/forward Tom Gross are others in that group of possible contenders for the Dogs. Geelong Falcons midfielder Xavier Ivisic and dashing defender Blake Leidler could be worth a look later on in the piece.
One thing with all of these possible selections is that none of them are elite with their kicking skills.
If you assume there are four categories to measure traits and skills against - Elite, Above Average, Average and Below Average I'd say all of these players are more around the 'average' level with their kicking skills ratings.
Ivisic and Leidler might be the better kicks of this group and Gross can be really inconsistent.

We must be valuing some other athletic traits like athleticism and endurance as being slightly more important than brilliant kicking skills. All players, from what we can understand, have good attitudes.

WA player Cody Angove was mentioned in WB BF. He looks quick & skilled, albeit on small side. Anyone think he’d be good for us as a small forward, later on an outside, pacy midfielder? Might take a while to develop. I’m guessing it would be a late round pick or a rookie selection. Presume WA sides will be all over him if he is seen as a promising player.

He's a nice prospect. Good kicking skills, reasonably good agility and endurance and while he's lean now he should fill out okay.
I'd prefer Hayes who has more elite traits but he's a decent recommendation.

I'm not even sure what is the common thread there besides good attitudes and their tank; it's certainly not pace or composure with ball in hand.

                    Twomey’s Late Mail:

No change to Dogs. Hynes & Moraes.

Reid & Berry priorities if somehow still on the board.

I'd probably prefer Robbie Warrell who to me is a GENUINE small forward.

Versatility might be one of the links.
                        Hynes - forward and midfield
                        Moreas - wing and forward
                        Davis - forward and midfield
Boxshall - Athletic forward, mid and even defender
                        Jacques - Back and wing
Gross, Ivisic - forward and midfield
                        Leidler - back and forward.

I agree that the lack of pace across the group is a bit concerning but lets see how it pans out on the night. One change with the picks could balance things out.

Its a big draft for Dom, I have a feeling he is being too conservative with his selections but lets wait and see.
