I don’t understand that offer from Essendon. We traded up from 35 & 48. They think we’d then trade down to 37 & 39. That’s pretty much a nil all draw for us. They’d surely have to make it worth our while. I don’t see that apparent offer as a serious offer considering we could’ve not traded with Brisbane and had similar picks.

But I do like the rumours as hopefully others with closer picks to ours (ie 31 and Saints 32) and a good KPP on the board might still get us the player we want and a bonus later pick. I think Sam Power will be pretty popular today.

North had to offer a F1 which is going to be an early pick next year to trade back into a late first rounder this year. Yes they also got a F2 coming back to them.
Just a few spots later we would need to get something very decent in return.
29 for 37, 39 and a F2 might be something worth considering.

North had to offer a F1 which is going to be an early pick next year to trade back into a late first rounder this year. Yes they also got a F2 coming back to them.
Just a few spots later we would need to get something very decent in return.
29 for 37, 39 and a F2 might be something worth considering.

To me it’s got to be negligible. Like a one pick downgrade for a later pick (ie 31 for Saints 32 & 51 assuming they won’t pick the player we want).

I can’t see Essendon doing a F1 (theirs or Dees) for our F2. But that’s where I’d start to consider it. But we are doing a great job on rebuilding on the run and we need to keep momentum through this years draft.

If we could trade a future something for a pick in the early 40's it might be worth considering later in the night if there is still a player or two we rate still available.

Brisbane have three picks in the 40’s because the bids were so late. That’s what I’d target. An F3 is the best we could offer realistically. Unless we are insanely in love with the kid, really in love.

Daicos Discount, meet Lowball Levi.

One year after clubs spat chips about Gold Coast snagging four academy players in the first round, four clubs sat on their hands in front of the player some rate as the best in the draft, Levi Ashcroft.

The father-son gun reads as close to a sure thing as you can get but Richmond ? as expected ? didn?t make a bid on Ashcroft when choosing Sam Lalor first.

North Melbourne (Finn O?Sullivan), Carlton (Jagga Smith) and Adelaide (Sid Draper) did the same with the next three choices.

It took Melbourne to finally land a bid on Ashcroft, which was matched quickly, allowing Levi to join Norm Smith medallist brother Will in Brisbane.

Just three years ago eyes rolled when clubs let Nick Daicos ? as close to a sure thing as you could get ? slide down to No.4.

That meant it only cost four picks in the 40s for the Lions to match lingering Levi.

Four picks in the 40s doesn?t read like fair price for young Ashcroft, but that is partly in thanks to the four clubs who didn?t raise their paddle when he was still on the board.

Even Levi was surprised he was left on the board for so long but he vowed to ?let the footy do the talking? for the next 15 years.

If Ashcroft delivers on his promise, like Daicos clearly has, it will be a bargain and a sign the bidding system in its first era hasn?t worked.

The AFL will change up the price clubs have to pay through draft points for father-sons and academy players next year but the Lions snuck in a second Ashcroft son before the bar was raised, with Will bid on at No.2 two drafts ago.

You wonder what Andrew Bassat was thinking as he sat in St Kilda?s draft room, after leading what has publicly been a one-man crusade demanding clubs pay a fair price for top talent.

At least his club put it on the line in bidding for Gold Coast academy prospect Leo Lombard at No.9.

The Saints were the only club to really go early on a bid, with Essendon?s Isaac Kako sliding into the teens and Brisbane?s Sam Marshall waiting until pick 25 for Sydney to make a bid.

That was the ninth time the Swans have placed an unsuccessful bid over the past nine years.

Brad Scott was the last coach to arrive on Wednesday night at 7.06pm and it took another 90 minutes for his club to land its academy target.

Essendon drew a blast from Fox Footy expert Mick Ablett for trading out what became pick 11 when Isaac Kako?s bid slid to 13, where Richmond staked a claim.

But the Bombers will be comfortable in their return for that pick and now hold two firsts next year.

Who are we likely to select tonight?

Davis- can see us taking him and would like him
Moreas- not really a fan but can see it
Alger- Can see it happening but don't think he's something that we really need
Whitlock- Don't see us taking him but I see a club wanting to trade with us to guarantee him
Shanahan- Same as Whitlock, not taking but a tool to get extra picks
Dodson- Could happen but I'd prefer Molier later
Boxshall- Big bodied tackler with a big tank, can see us liking him especially if we ended up splitting 29
Champion- Got a lot of traits we'd like but I don't think we bid on him sadly
Mraz- we'd probably be looking for a younger key defender who will be ready once Busslinger is developed so I can see us taking him especially since he seems like a traditional stopper instead of the third man floating across the front.
Ough- I think he's probably a little too close to Hynes in attributes
Hayes- Can see it happening especially if we split 29, fast offensively minded wing.

Also reportedly Essendon are trying to trade with us or Richmond for our first pick in the second round. If we can turn 29 and like our F3 into 37 & 39 with something else coming back our way then that would be a win as it'd give us another crack in the top 40. By the time you reach pick 30 then the players that you really want are usually only on one or two other teams boards anyways.

Drilling/breaking that down from where we started:

Originally we had 35 & 48. Those picks would?ve been +/- 33 & 35 before bids.

So accepting that offer it?s keeping the (before bids) 27 from Brisbane. Or what we had with an upgrade of 48 into 33 and and upgrade of around 20 picks next year.

Mid range 15 pick upgrade this year & mid range 20 pick upgrade next year.



From where we are today:

Pick 29 drops to 37.
For that we get Pick 39 and a 20 pick upgrade next year.



Still not sure it?s a huge offer, unless we expect circa Pick 30 to be great next year.
