    Re: 2013 draft watch

I've heard Billy Hartung's name mentioned a fair bit as a possible number 1 pick, never seen him play. Maybe a bit of an unknown as he's been playing school footy.

Someone mentioned Conlon before, I think he has a fair way to go on what I saw last year. Has a bit of Paddy Ryder about him, would be next to ideal as the 2nd ruckman. Has great athleticism for a big man and a good set of hands. Interesting to see what he does this year, looked a little raw last year.

If Lennon can push in the midfield he could go very high. Has all the attributes, athletic, good user, competitive, clean and can play in most positions.

I won't get to watch much U18 footy this year, unfortunately due to other commitments. I don't really have a preference yet, Billings, Aish and Boyd would all be nice at this early stage. Looking forward to reading some reports hopefully.

p.s. I just read the post about Boyd citing Lloyd. If Hogan was available, Boyd would not be number 1. If Martin was available, Hogan would not be number 1. If you don't think Boyd's athleticism is a potential red flag for a lot of clubs then you are not watching the games. That said - at his size - and with the ability to play in the ruck - he is a unique proposition and someone who could very quickly contribute.

Can't make it. The u18 trial is at about five pm at west Adelaide.

Totally agree re Martin and Hogan and yes Boyd will be more Petrie than Buddy. I subscribe to the quality talls win matches philosophy and I'd be suprised if Boyd wasn't taken at 1 if the draft were held tomorrow. Lloyd was just raving about him and from what I've seen its at least somewhat justified. Having said which - there is a long season still ahead of these kids and could still be lots of movement. We aren't missing a Carey opportunity if we don't get him and we need quality disposal all over the ground so I'll just be happy with another quality player in the draft this year. Boyd will be a very good player wherever he goes.

I thought this debate was well reasoned and with passion. Seems to me that the salient point that both sides may agree with and may have actually been arguing, is that it is best to pick the best player, especially if he is clearly the best. Unless of course a side has a very clear shortage of one type. Otherwise if there is not a clearly superior player, then its arguable whether a gun KF is a better option than a gun mid.
FWIW I think there are not as many gun KF as gun mids so get a gun KF if you need both KF and mid preferably but not religiously.
So hopefully we'll have two Boyds next year, although Scorlibo as you argue, if a gun mid outshines Boyd, take him, except if he's an inside mid, sheesh we've got em comin outta all lines; only a fast, goal kicking, penetrative and accurate kick please. Life is too short.

Actually Scorlibo your argument has presented me with an image: Matty Richardson bitching about the lack of good delivery. A great KF can languish with poor delivery of course.

More fool you for thinking some sponsor somewhere wouldn't have branded it!

Knew it was branded i.e 'NAB' just didn't know some marketing guru thought they needed the change to 'Rising Star Program'. That's new, surely !

Interesting I've heard the opposite from a bloke who has seen him live 3-4 times this year. Said he seemed a little disinterested and just wanted to play on his own terms. Thought it was disappointing as he is a talent.

Wouldn't really blame him for feeling disillusioned after what happened last year. What a shame if that talent is wasted.
