DOMINIC SHEED
Height: 183cm
Weight: 82kg
Team/Club: WA/Subiaco
Position: Midfielder
Player Comparison: Simon Black
Range: 6-15
Player Profile
Dominic Sheed took this year’s national championships by storm, before unfortunately breaking his collarbone in the fourth round of the carnival, which saw a premature end to his championships. The classy, prime mover from WA averaged 27.8 disposals in his four outings, eventually taking home the Larke Medal for Division 1′s best player award. Sheed is an incredible talent; and arguably was the best performed and well-rounded midfielder of the champs, who should be rated much higher than some are giving him credit for. Sheed is high production midfielder, easily shakes a tag, has the endurance and football smarts to run all day, and accumulates an elite number of possessions, whilst averaging 13kms a match throughout the championships. Sheed is a well-balanced midfielder; he can play as a ball-winning extractor, burrowed under the packs, laying tackles and clearing the ball from congestion, or as a free-wheeling, offensive midfielder, propelling his team forward. In attack, he kicks goals from all angles, none better than outside 50 off a step or on the run, in defence, he is cool, calm and collect and players the percentages, finding targets with ease – he is an unforgiving footballer. A super elite ball user, Sheed is damaging on either side of his body, and relishes a one on one contest when resting up forward. He’s a fantastic pressure player, makes good decisions when the heat is on, and when the whips are cracking – Sheed is at the forefront, willing his team on. Rarely ever caught with the footy, Sheed is one of – if not the most exciting prospect in this year’s draft.

“It was a disappointing way to finish, especially with only a couple of minutes to go. But I was very happy for us to win after the siren. It’s only a collarbone, so obviously an ACL or something like that would have been a lot worse. After surgery you can get back in four weeks.” – Dom Sheed speaking positively about his injury to AFL reported Callum Twomey.
Strengths:
Elite endurance, fierce tackler and competitior, prolific ball winner, , incredible vision and awareness, composure under pressure, kicks goals from just about anywhere on the ground, wins his own ball, elite at the stoppages where he dominates clearances, strong bodied and is a standout leader, rarely fumbles and is rarely caught, and has a strong influence on the game. Very classy and effective with the ball, damaging, hard to contain and is an elite user of the ball. Very well balanced midfielder who plays inside and outside, is calm and cool under pressure, and runs both ways. When resting up forward, he plays like dominate key forward, able to protect the drop zone and mark above his head, plays tall, and will burn you if allowed too much space. The best, and most consistent midfielder of the championships.
Weaknesses
The only whack on Sheed is his “lack” of pace, in saying that – Sheed rarely gets caught with the football, he knows his limitations.
