Their seven years of rebuilding generated one of the most ordinary preliminary final performances since 2007. They are a fair way off it.TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.Comment

Re: Other clubs delistings/Want out - 2014
1. To be a much better side than they are currently they need to get some elite talent into the club.
The best way to do that is through top 10 draft picks, which they don't have. They could trade for them, but it would cost a lot and break up what they think is a strong squad atm, and would be unlikely to deliver results until the draftee develops. Free agency could theoretically net them a star, but they have already recruited the best free agent that wasn't Buddy from the last two years in Dal Santo. Trading for elite talent would cost them too much. Their first pick has no value so if they wanted someone like Dangerfield they would need to give up two very good players at least.
So they can't improve through elite talent.
2. Realise what everyone else has already, that they aren't good enough, and focus all their efforts on the rebuild to end all rebuilds.
This would involve trading everyone that won't be near their peak in 4-5 years time and doesn't hold any value as a developer of young teammates. This means putting guys like Petrie, Thomas, Wells, Goldstein, Grima, Dal Santo and Thompson up for trade and trying to cash in like Hawthorn did with Hay, Thompson etc. Get as many top 20 draft picks as possible, pump games into them for the next 3 years and hope they have a better core to rise again with.
This does however mean they have to front up to their delusional supporters and tell them that:
-Yes we made the Prelim but that's as far as we think we can go with this group so we are restarting (or is that refreshing?)
-Many of the players you have loved and who have starred for us will be ruthlessly cut from our list because they aren't good enough
-Brent Harvey, North Melbourne Hero, can choose to play a couple more seasons with a struggling side or just retire now.
-North Melbourne, who never bottom out, are going to bottom out.
-Brad Scott, "best coach in the AFL", has failed to develop the list as well as hoped but he is still the greatest coach (this is if he is still employed after doing this)
So they look like idiots and alienate all their supporters if they admit that everyone else is right.
3. Continue with the current good squad, and try and enhance it by picking up good players from other clubs that should slightly improve you
This means taking advantage of the players they can get through free agency, like Higgins and Waite, and using them to try and keep the squad as strong as possible. Keep telling themselves that they can beat anybody on their day, because they have proven it, and sweep the fact that the group is mentally weak and prone to dropping easy games under the carpet. Besides, they were one match away from the Grand Final, so they are clearly in the best 4 sides no?
There only chance with this tactic is if they run into some good form at the end of the year, and the best sides like Sydney, Hawthorn, Fremantle, Port Adelaide etc. either cop lots of injuries, drop off unexpectedly or choke in the big finals, hopefully against North.
So they look like idiots to everyone else, but keep feeding the delusion to themselves.
You can see why option 3 is the one they are running with. Their best chance for short term success imo is continue option 3, and then try and secure someone like Dangerfield as a free agent. Even then I think they are no chance, but they are going to drop right off in 2-3 years anyway when their key players retire so they might as well have a red hot go before then.I should leave it alone but you're not rightComment
