Re: What are you doing at the moment?

I've just finished working on work stuff, in lieu of having two days off (Friday and Monday) to attend a friend's wedding.

It's just *!*!*!*!ed these days, honestly, you try and take a day or two off but the book ends of those two days are so completely chaotic it's not funny.
    TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

What's a bessa brick ledge? Is it that grey oblong one? Sort of flatter than a standard brick. We just moved into a clinker brick place. Long time since I've lived in a brick house. I forgot how hermetically sealed they are from the outside world and light levels and stuff.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Bessa brick also known as Porta Davis homes, it's the grey long huge bricks a lot of schools are made of.

I know what a besser block is but what's that got to do with Porter Davis (a large home builder - they built my house)? I must be missing something?

I took it to mean that Porta Davis mainly use Bessel bricks? Like Hansen mainly built Californian bungalows.

Re: What are you doing at the moment?

Irrelevant fact: most countries don't use the term Besser Block/Brick, in UK they are known as breezeblocks (as in the Alt-J song) and in US they are known as cinder blocks.

Pretty sure they mostly just build regular old houses no different to say a Metricon or any of the other volume builders.

When I bought this house people saw it and said its a Porta Davis or bessa brick home so I gather that was their style Bessa brick and flat tin roof.

Porter Davis (not Porta) have a strong reputation for building tasteful, high quality homes with nice designs, Ledge! At least as volume builders go!

I think you've mashed breeze-blocks - often used in public toilets (and the WO Mission Elite Learning Centre) or loos with "portaloo" in your mind or something!

There's a thousands of Porter Davis homes around Melbourne. They're even prominent in suburbs like Brighton and Kew!

Mission Elite Learning Centre , that's the same brick exactly, I'm not mashing anything it's what many people have called it over the years either Porta Davis or Bessa brick home, personally Its old (circa 1975) hard to do renos with but the most stable home ever , on a slab and I know no previous owner has punched holes in it.

I understand Ledge, but Porter Davis has only existed since around 2000 and has never built with bessa bricks. I find it strange that such a young Victorian company would have a well known building product originating from the US in the late 1800's named after them. Particularly one that they have never built with.

I know them as breeze blocks (the UK norm), but the Kiwis call them cinder blocks - which is the generic US term. Bessa were just the US company who first marketed them down here in the 50's. I used to call them either "commission" blocks or "dunny" blocks because councils used to love them for toilet blocks. Thus the thought that you or someone you know might've mashed dunnies with porta loos and Porter Davis or something..? But obviously not!
