I think there used to be a rule banning straight draft picks swaps. I'm not sure why it was banned but quite a few draft pick swaps have been made in recent years so I don't know why they are invoking it all of a sudden and in this particular case.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

You can swap one draft pick for another unless a player is involved. You can swap multiple picks

I think I read something about the AFL not allowing draft pick swaps if the point differential is too great (more than 200 from memory, but don't quote me). That would explain why Bird had to be thrown into the deal.

The Giants would then pass on that Carlton traded pick to Collingwood - along with Treloar - for the Magpies' first round picks this year and next year.

That's a lot of players for a 2nd round pick
Four players for one second rounder? Sounds like a bargain, especially considering Plowman was a pick #3 (2012), Lamb was pick #21 (2010), Sumner was pick #10 (2011), and Phillips is a 202cm Ruck/forward with a few years in the system (who is a bit of an unknown quantity and could be anything if he can get his hammies sorted).

I think these boys have probably been casualties of playing in a team with 300 first round draft picks and we probably haven't had a good look at them yet. Is there anyone there that we should have looked at? Lamb and Sumner are probably too similar to the abundance of small players we have, but I think Plowman would have been worth a shot at.

Looks like they are indicating it's 2 x 2nd round picks to get the 4 players.
I think Plowman is worth 1 of those picks himself

Any chance we are pushing to get Lobbe now that Dixon is headed to Port?

Richmond sniffing around with pick 12? Is he worth pick 11?

I think we could be interested but to me pick 11 is playing overs. He has a long term contract as well that I would imagine is an expensive one. The question is around if Lobbe would fit into Bevo's plans? He is a vastly different ruckman to Martin which was our preferred option.

This whole academy bidding system is making a farce of trade week and the value of draft picks.

and they haven't got much left to Trade for Talia. Maybe pick 44?

A bit of confusion with this trade. Some outlets are reporting that Sydney get 24 and 25 (not 44), and that St Kilda are getting 14 and 44 (as well as Carlisle). The above looks too inequitable for Sydney and too beneficial for Essendon.

They've overreacted because of pressure from the likes of Eddie McGuire because of the perception that Sydney was cleaning up with their academy players but in reality it would have evened out over time.
