We are not overly surprised are we?! Always felt We were only a chance if they didn’t increase his contract.
I was really torn on him, I thinks Butts is a better fit in terms of needs just due to the size difference. However we are desperate for leadership down back and he would have provided that in.
It is a bummer missing out on Wilkie but was he ever a realistic chance? VC of his club maybe Captain. Seems loyal. Two years left on a contract. Once the Saints up the ante he was always going to stay.
sure we can all be doom and gloom but at the end of the day we need to look at other options. Let’s wait and see what the trade period brings
Saints are a destination club as they are offering crazy sums to good players whereas we are much more measured focusing primarily on areas of need.
Looking forward to pumping Saints again next year and Wilkie asking himself why he gave up a mill to play for them again
They have improved their list, have we yet? We pump them by twice in 2026 with no significant strengthening in areas we are poor, it will be a miracle.
How much time have we wasted on this Wilkie pipe dream?
The trade period is still a week away from actually starting. Are you serious with this post?
We threw a big punch at a proper elite defender in his prime, who was not even in the frame to be leaving his club 3 weeks ago. We narowely missed but we didn't die wondering - that's exactly the relentless proactivity want our club to be showing to improve and get better. This is nothing like the Silvagni issue, who was a free agent and whose old man works at his destination club.
I'm quite sure Sam Power has capacity in his brain to be working on more than one thing at once.
Who’s left? Young and Blight from Tigers. Really don’t want May or Frost, think I’d prefer Serong from Hawks than them
Butts is by far the best and really only option who could improve us dramatically. May is 33 and washed, Frost 32 and meh, Butts is 25 and entering his prime, just doesn't seem like he wants to move at all which is a bit concerning for me since he was overlooked and we have a clear spot for him. I know the trade period hasn't started but it's getting worse for us by the day. I think most of us agree if we don't get in a lockdown fullback 2026 won't be too different to 2025. Surely list management is cooking up something in the background...
Wilkie was definitely a long shot, if anything it's great that we made the Saints pony up and pay him more of what he actually deserves and puts more of a dent in their cap. He's obviously very loyal which I admire and only didn't come across because they had to pay up, otherwise I reckon we would have got him.
As others have mentioned, we won a Premiership with Fletch and Hamling as our keys down back, Wilkie could have covered say one of Freo's defenders had we had him in that last game, yet they still would have separated their forwards to give them that advantage given our holes all over the ground, fix that and we shouldn't have as much of an issue, structure up with a more defensive mindset, separate our forwards and we should be ok.
