Especially when you listen to Tom Boyd who probably has a similar mindset to a lot of potential recruits when he said he didn't even realise WO was over the West Gate. Then when he did he hated driving over it.

I mean Melbourne players have to drive out to Crimebourne and Essendon train at an airport (admittedly with soft floors), surely the location of Whitten Oval isn't that bad?

Haha very good.

Dees train in Melbourne so it's a good incentive not to get dropped!

Essendon can sell that facility which I think we can do now too and it's a lot closer to the city.

-Dogs are in the hunt for Barrass, as are Sydney, he is gettable for the right price, WCE want first round picks and are happy to sell the farm to get them.
-Dogs showing interest in Jack Ginnivan, disgruntled with lack of opp at Collingwood since Bobby came in.
-Dogs showing interest in Sam Flanders, wants more midfield opportunity, GCS need points and list spots.
-Liam Henry 90% coming to us, turns out we've been in his ear since the start of the season.

Doedee is all but signed with Geelong at this point, waiting for season to be over to make it official, don't be surprised if his the first trade of the trade period.

We either need to start playing Cleary in the Duryea role or we need to find another developed and season small lockdown defender, cannot go into next season with just Duryea in that role.

No from me for Ginnivan, his very much maligned by some of the Collingwood supporters I speak with. Does not do the 1% , bit like a Stephenson. We should be trying to persist with McNeil and West as fwd with some chop out in the midfield at some stage. I see West replacing Libba eventually in the midfield.

Why are we recruiting Liam Henry ? if its on the wing, Since we have Barker, Scott, Poulter( new recruit) and potentially Clearly or Bedendo on the wing. I don't get it. How will he perform in Melbourne with Wet, crap soggy grounds ?

No from me for Ginnivan, his very much maligned by some of the Collingwood supporters I speak with. Does not do the 1% , bit like a Stephenson. We should be trying to persist with McNeil and West as fwd with some chop out in the midfield at some stage. I see West replacing Libba eventually in the midfield.

That reads to me as 'why recruit a best 22 player when we have like 4 fringe players'. Kind of brings me back to the days when sport games were just starting and people would take their knowledge from them to suggest trading Jade Rawlings, Peter Street, Cameron Faulkner and Adam Morgan for young Nick Riewoldt or something.

Not that you're suggesting anything as strange as that to be clear.

High doubts on Baker, Scott is a meh for me, Henry was better on Saturday got the ball at least.
Poulter and Bendendo have hardly played, Cleary never in the afl as a winger.

Tom Barrass trade call will be ultimate test of West Coast‘s rebuilding plans

The concept of trading star defender Tom Barrass to Sydney is unthinkable for some West Coast fans. MARK DUFFIELD unpacks the case for and against.

West Coast’s reigning best and fairest Tom Barrass is on the trade table – at the right price.

This is unofficial of course. No club admits it will consider trading one of its best until it knows the trade can be done.

But in what might become one of the best examples in AFL history that few are untradeable, speculation is building that the Eagles would be prepared to shift the 2022 John Worsfold Medallist, provided someone is prepared to pay enough.

And the someone is almost certainly Sydney. Will the Swans, desperate to find a tall defender, be prepared to part with a 2023 top 10 draft pick to get one?

That, sources say, is the price the Eagles are likely to put on Barsass’s head. They might ask for a player as well. That will really test how keen the Swans are.

It sounds counterintuitive. The aim of a rebuild is to get more very good players in. It seems that you are making it harder to do if you trade a proven very good player out.

And it also sounds unlikely: Barrass, after fielding interest from Sydney at the end of 2021, penned a lucrative five year contract extension to keep him at the Eagles long term. In March this year he and his partner Nadia Rosa bought a $3.15 million nome in Peppermint Grove – the plushest suburb in Perth.

Unlikely perhaps, but now very possible. The interest from Sydney is strong. The Eagles might not eventually do it. But they won’t be walking away from the idea just yet.

For the Swans the rationale is simple. Their 2022 grand final team had the McCartin brothers as the two tall defenders and their current team has only just regained one.

Paddy, who has suffered a recurrence of concussion issues, is no certainty to ever play again. Tom has had his own concussion issues this year, playing just seven games after returning to face Richmond in the Swans loss to the Tigers at the MCG.

The Swans have been unable to replicate their 2022 form and the lack of power defenders has been a big part of the problem. They recently re-signed 33-year old defender Dane Rampe for a further two years in an attempt to shore up their defensive stocks.

The other aim in a rebuild – apart from just getting more talent in, is to get a critical mass of talent around the same age so the players develop, improve and bond together and they all peak at around the same time.

This is what makes this rebuild challenging for the Eagles. There is a gaping hole in the middle of their list which means their best shot at having that critical mass of talent peak at the same time lies with their youngest players.

Their oldest players, like Nic Naitanui, Luke Shuey, Shannon Hurn, Andrew Gaff and even Jeremy McGovern, have reached a point where their trade value is virtually nil.

So the Eagles have a decision to make on the next group down – who of them are still likely to be around when they next contend?

Elliot Yeo is three years older than Barrass but also four years on from the last time he powered through a season fully fit. He would be a major gamble for any interested club which would significantly lower the trade price. Oscar Allen is three years younger, a power forward and the one “proven” youngster the Eagles have at the club. If there is such a thing as untradeable at West Coast, Allen is it.

Not top 10. Depending what our first is. If we do under Bevo the normal (ex. 16 & 21) then we have pick 11 or 12. If a medical says he’s got 5 years in him for example. There’s also a Draft Point trade opportunity with WCE too (assuming their port picks are above Lions).

Something like (currently):

Dogs: Barass, Pick 37, Pick 55
WCE: Pick 11/12, Pick 34, Pick 64

Its possible end of second round FA compo could extend that gap between 34 & 37 to more like 34 & 40.

They could ask to swap Pick 19 for the Lions current Pick 16 as a sweetener (assuming it stays there). If Croft is expected to go top 15 maybe we do that if they give us points to completely cover the shuffle down. Then trade out 19 for another player and grab Croft first round, with a later couple of picks.

A lot of moving parts.


It’s a WA article, so I expect an ambit claim from them. No way Sydney offer their pick 7 or whatever. But our picks and their picks, and both our needs are well positioned.

WA surely have a truckload of cap space - if they want a high pick too surely we get them to make a contract contribution?

I’m sure we ask. If it’s a good deal for them with a draft point component raising their second/third rounder, a little cash won’t impact them if they see the return at the ND. Or hopefully they’ve front loaded him already. Either way, it’s an interesting space to watch.

Edit: Also note with our picks, with at least Cadman going before our first, our Pick 11/12 will shuffle down too. So we’re not giving up quite as much.

West coast should try yo get as many picks this and next year to rebuild their list , they recognize its time to bottom out . See Hawthorn as example . There be a few years of pain.


Barass should be in his prime now , so he fits profile for us as we are trying to get as many good players in our premiership contention window
