What if holding Tim for the extra contract year brought us the 2024 Flag or letting him go effectively cost that flag?

Plus the entire landscape might change before the end of 2024.

We need to negotiate for our best position and I believe we are capable of winning the flag in 2023 and 2024 with the right coaching/team selection/game plan.

    We must hold firm.
Sorry, there's always a but......and the but is we'd need to have a contingency or recovery plan in place immediately.

I'm guessing that if Tim's out the door we already know it and would be planning for it accordingly. I am one of the posters who think his disadvantages/ limitations around here are a bit overblown and that he's extremely valuable to us and can be a matchwinner.
    TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

He might possibly win the B and F and get AA.

Has any club lost their B and F two years in a row?

It would certainly call Luke Beveridge's coaching into question if you asked Corn Kanes.

Honestly, they'll go at him like wolves if it happens, and completely ignore the wild cash upgrade.

Unfair comment when we all know that most big guys mature later. He is now one of the premier ruckman

There are cases of players staying despite better offers.
            Probably the majority.
Guess it depends on how much the deal is, and what our counter looks like.
If they're close.... Maybe it's warranted.
Not Bevo, but the club should have questions asked.

I remember Jordan Roughead taking that mark from the kick-in after the disallowed JJ goal. That was a matchwinning mark. Tim is absolutely capable of that.
That's a great moment. A matchwinning moment. So was the wall of Biggs. Neither had to be the most talented or highest paid player on the field. I guess the question with Tim is does he have those moments in him in big matches, does he have enough to justify what he's asking for and will he even beat his opponent on the day?

I'm not a Tim English hater but... I do still have doubts. He's 25 now. It's clear he'll never really be great at the physical stuff. It's not clear he'll be good enough to not get bullied like he was in the final last year.

I look at it this way.

Over the last 20 years name one team that had a stand out dominant ruckman who won them the GF?
Gawn is probably the closest you'd get, going back further, Dean Cox, all the dynasty teams of the last 20 years (Geelong, Hawks, Richmond) had serviceable but not great ruckman, certainly not million-dollar-men like English will be.

I'd rather that money spent on the midfield.

I don't want to lose English, don't get me wrong, but if push comes to shove and his wanting money, I'd rather us spend it on midfield / retaining Naughton/JUH than I would on retaining a ruck.

CATS REACH OUT TO DOGS ON BAILEY...

Geelong Cats have made contact with Western Bulldogs to assure the club is not pursuing gun playmaker Bailey Smith.

The Herald Sun understands a senior official at Geelong reached out to a colleague at the kennel to ease any fears the Dogs had about a rumoured approach from the Cats.

There was a report the Cats were actively discussing Smith but Geelong has denied it is in the midst of making a play for the star midfielder-forward.

Smith, 22, is contracted at the Bulldogs for another season and played well in the crushing win over Essendon at Marvel Stadium on Friday night amid some debate about his best position.

Smith, who again spent time on the forward flank, gathered 25 possessions and was highlighted by coach Luke Beveridge for his selfless team play helping disrupt Essendon’s intercept game across half back.

The No. 7 pick in the 2018 draft will play his 100th senior match against GWS Giants in Ballarat on Saturday afternoon.

That’s good news if they’ve got Pick 7 from Sydney.

Makes trading Pick 1 a little more palatable.
