Re: ASADA issues show-cause notices to Essendon players

So what are people's gut feelings?

It will be most interesting to see what fresh information WADA puts on the table, surely it will be far more comprehensive than the AFL's efforts (no witnesses called!). I will be surprised if they have gone through this process without something fairly substantial to show.

On the other hand, given time already out of the game, presumed lack of conclusive evidence for every individual player and mitigating circumstances (players being lied to etc), the full 2 years will almost certainly not be applied.

If I had to guess, I'll go for 6 months, which would see the players return in July.

I'm not sure what the punishment should be, but I'm really hoping the bastards are found guilty.
I couldn't stand to see Hird walking around with a ten ton halo.

No matter what happens Tuesday, his halo has long gone.

I'm not sure James believes that though. Nor does Lindsay Tanner it would seem

I think 12 weeks of the Home and Away season could be an option

I haven't looked into this closely, but I suspect the international court won't look at it in terms of AFL weeks, they'll use a world-wide model that will be based on months banned, probably 6, 12, 18 or 24, less time already sat out.

Can Essendon appeal WADA's decision? I truly hope this is the end of it.

                My preferred outcome:-
The 34 rubbed out for 10 matches
Hird banned from coaching at any level
                Watson loses Brownlow
                AFL cited for mis-management

No, there is no avenue for appeal. This SHOULD be the end of it. Agree with your summation too.

It will be the CAS's decision, WADA being the "prosecutor" rather than the judge. CAS's decision can be appealed in the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland, although usually only on procedural grounds. It's very unlikely (close to 0 chance) that either party would appeal this decision.

Re: ASADA issues show-cause notices to Essendon players

I have a feeling WADA is eager on these proceedings to give the AFL a bit of a smack, mostly because the latter devised its own illicit drug policy contradicting the prescriptions of WADA. Whether the CAS is sympathetic to WADA or the AFL is anyone's guess.

My gut says the CAS would have been completely put off by the AFL prosecuted first round on the basis of the incompetent ASADA investigative and legal work, and will view things very much more harshly as a result.

I'm not holding my breath Crameri will be playing before July.

Yep. I'd go along with this. Even though losing Crammers for 10 weeks will hurt. I'd still be happy with this outcome.

Agreed. And closing comments by CAS suggest no leniency if they are found guilty.

So I reckon they will either get off, or they will get a 2 year suspension.

Same. Don't understand all the half a season comments
If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.

The players all sat out 6 months, so (on precedent) that'll almost certainly be subtracted from any ban. I really can't see anyone effectively missing any more than 1 full season.

Cronulla players were found guilty under the ASADA prosecution and given a 12 month ban but, after deductions, missed 3 weeks.

The scenarios are not identical, but I just can't see a full 2 years, no deductions, happening.
