Re: Father/Son Watch
This sounds like the drums of doom that we have all been fearing...
Four clubs could get their wish for more access to indigenous players in metropolitan areas under Academy rules
NGA tweak to give SA, WA clubs greater indigenous access
THE SOUTH Australian and West Australian clubs look set to get their wish for greater access to indigenous draft prospects under likely changes to the Next Generation Academy model.
The AFL has been working on tweaks to the NGA system for close to a year, with changes expected to be detailed to clubs imminently.
The League's head of talent, Tristan Salter, addressed club recruiters this week during the under-16s boys and under-18 girls championships on the Gold Coast, which followed a recent meeting of football managers.
Clubs were told it is likely Adelaide, Port Adelaide, West Coast and Fremantle will gain priority access to indigenous prospects in metropolitan regions after pick No.40 of the NAB AFL Draft.
The clubs have so far only had access to indigenous players living in rural and remote areas.
However, the players with multicultural backgrounds who fit the NGA criteria and live in metropolitan areas are available to be developed and selected in their states.
The move would allow more players to be included in the clubs' respective NGA programs.Comment

If we value Ugle-Hagan is a 1st or 2nd rounder. We've got the ability to nab him prior to then.Comment

Re: Father/Son Watch
Seems to be referring to increasing access to metro areas of Adelaide and Perth - and Ugle-Hagan is from a vic rural area originally anyway - so I'm not making a link between this development and any access on our NGA prospects.Comment

Re: Father/Son Watch
I’m fearing an inference that all NGA talent will only be applicable from 40 (in the proposed tweaks) when they allow SA and WA to NGA metro kids.
So if you have a player that someone uses 39 or below on, it’s bad luck. 40 onwards would see normal rules apply.
Why? Well, they probably fear a scenario where a potential Lance Franklin or a player in line to be the #1 pick goes to someone like the Bulldogs for a collection of draft picks in the 20’s and 30’s.
If it wasn’t us getting totally screwed, I would sort of agree with this in principle. Can you imagine, for example, WC or Geelong finishing top 2 (behind us obviously) this year and pulling the #1 kid? Or the Crows getting #1 via Carlton and then a kid who would have been one as an extra for points made from later picks (so essentially #1 and #2). The rest of the competition would rightfully be filthy.Comment

Re: Father/Son Watch
Its a poorly written and ambiguous article. I've read it a few times and have obtained a different reading each time.
On one read it made it sound like indigenous talent taken before pick 40 just subject to the normal draft.
Another read made it sound as if normal academy rules apply up til pick 40 and after that the WA & Sth Aust clubs could bid on any metro academy players from metro areas as well as rural.
If this screws us next year with Ugle-Hagan I hope the club can say they aggressively challenged this and did everything to try and secure a different outcome.Comment

Re: Father/Son Watch
That article is weirdly written - I got nervous reading this
‘The AFL is mindful of protecting the first two rounds of the draft from further compromise.’
But ‘further’ could mean that all existing Vic set ups remain.

Could these collectively mean, clubs retain top 40 NGA, but have to use their 1st or 2nd rounders to get them?Comment

Re: Father/Son Watch
A different but related article in The Age says they're not going to allow clubs to trade 1st round picks to cobble later picks in order to get points to select highly touted Academy players, ala Swans and Nick Blakey.
Could these collectively mean, clubs retain top 40 NGA, but have to use their 1st or 2nd rounders to get them?Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment
