    Re: Father/Son Watch

I have no idea who ‘inner sanctum’ draft watchers are, but they now have Croft at 19 in their rankings/phantom:

    19. Jordan Croft

VIC Metro/Calder Cannons (Western Bulldogs F/S)

    KEY FWD, 200cm, 80kg

    May Ranking: Unranked

After securing Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (pick one) and Sam Darcy (pick two) in 2020 and 2021 respectively, the Dogs look to have another key forward on the horizon this year in the form of father son prospect Croft. The son of defender Matthew, the Cannons product booted three goals from 10 disposals in a best on ground performance for Victoria Metro over South Australia. With three games still remaining for the Metro side, the strong marking target will be looking to cement himself as a first round choice in November.

Some pick after our first rounders, like pick 19, would be ideal.

I think I suggested that players like Croft have tended to go after pick 15 and used Todd Marshall as an example.

Depending on where Brisbane finish and matched bids before then, we might very well need to trade it out. So the question is whether we use it on:

          A player outright
A player for a slight downgrade (Brisbane pick for a player and slide down the order and then split points to make some back)
A points trade (makes little sense)
          A future first rounder
A package with our first trying to get GCS First Rounder

Croft is giving us something to think about if he’s +/- Pick 20.

You certainly did suggest that. I really do hope you are correct but I still have that nagging doubt he will go higher.

Athletic 200cm player who is kicking goals and still has a mountain of upside from a development perspective as he really only committed late to AFL.

My view is that clubs will need to be very patient with him as it will take longer for him to physically develop and ready for senior football.

Rookie Me - June Power Rankings:

Croft slipped backwards from ranked 13 down to 14. That was before the Champs game on the weekend. So could have slipped back again. They reckon Top 15 if he holds his hot form. But some time off and a quiet champs game helps with a small further slide back I’d think.

These guys are the most bullish on Croft that I read.

                  Re: Father/Son Watch

Quote from Vic Metro coach (via star weekly):

Western Bulldogs father-son prospect Jordan Croft from the Calder Cannons is another that has been turning heads.

Son of Matthew, who played 186 games for the Dogs, is 200 centimetres and has been in outstanding form.

Kicking 14.3 from his last four talent league matches as well as a four goal performance for Vic Metro against the Young Guns and a three goal display against South Australia in the champs.

“He’s got a fantastic work rate to get up the ground and reset.. when he gets on the move he’s pretty hard to stop at the size that he is, I really like that part of his game,” Harding said.

                    Re: Father/Son Watch

                    ESPN Power Rankings July:

                    19. Jordan Croft (new entry)

                    Calder Cannons/Vic Metro

                    FWD, 200cm, 80kg

Talent League: 6 games, 11.5 disposals, 2.5 goals

A supreme athlete with his size, speed and agility at ground level, Croft is a Bulldogs father-son prospect to add to their haul of talented talls in the past few drafts. He ripped open a game for Vic Metro against SA with three goals and a beautiful kick into the 50 to set up another. The Dogs would love to see Croft trialled down back with a look towards the future - his leap and strong hands hold him in good stead at either end of the ground.

                    Plays like: Joe Daniher

That’s two or three different rankings that have him at Pick 19 (Rookie me has him at Pick 14). After some matched bids, that’s end of the First Round at Pick 19.

Our last four picks cover that price. So we’d currently have natural picks 12, 16 & 19 with Croft.

AFL Draft 2023 power rankings: The top 30 prospects after national under-18 championships

Croft at 23, Lual not listed.

                        Jordan Croft
                        Calder Cannons/Vic Metro
                        Forward, 200cm
U18 National Championships Averages: 9.3 disposals, 3.3 marks, 1.7 tackles, 6 score involvements, 1.3 goals, 68 ranking points (3 games)

Another year, another talented tall linked to the Western Bulldogs. Croft is the son of former Bulldogs key defender Matthew Croft but is making his name as a marking and goalkicking key forward and is available as a father-son prospect this year. Rival clubs expect a bid on Croft to come within the top-30 picks on draft night following a breakout season from the Calder Cannons product. While still lightly built, Croft is extremely mobile and athletic, leads well and marks the ball at the highest point, which makes him tough for opposition defenders to stop. Croft burst onto the scene with five goals against Northern Territory in Round 4 of the Coates Talent League and carried his form into the national championships, which started with three goals in Vic Metro?s first game against South Australia.

Thanks Axe, I mentioned a while back that I think a bid might come for Croft after pick 15 or so and it's good to read he is rated after pick 20. He's talented but he will need time which is why I think he won't go too early. Interesting that Lual had his best game of the championship but I'm confident that he's a late 30's or more likely a 40's type pick.

                              GCS: Picks 6 & 24 (2,536 DPs)

                              Dogs: Picks 12, 16 & 34 (2,877 DPs)

Would we try to do a mutual draft point trade with GCS. They get a big chunk (extra 341 DPs) for their three academy kids. For us, if Croft was Pick 30 and Lual pick 40+.

We need about a maximum 600 DPs. We have about 200 DP in late picks. Then we need to find about 400 points. We trade Sweet & Buku for points and a few tweaks. There?s enough points.

Then we have picks 6, 24, 30 (Croft), 40+ (Lual), 70, Scott upgraded.

So what would you prefer assuming Croft at 30+:

Picks 12 & 16 (34 goes on Croft after being split), or

                              Picks 6 & 24
