We definitely need to get some more talented midfielders to the club though, hopefully starting at this years draft.
Move Naughton back and play forwards as forwards. Why shoehorn Bruce into a backline role? Why not let Darcy flourish in the forward line. Yes the backmen are old (Jones, Keath), but with Croft on the horizon we should have nabbed another quality mid.

Whether you or any of us agree the club does not view Naughton as a backman so that point is moot at this stage. Not taking Busslinger would have left our KPD stocks dangerously thin in 2 years time without a trade(s) to cover.

Obviously it's too early to tell much about the 2022 draft crop but at this very early stage no midfield names jump out in the picks after ours. It would have been madness to ignore a position of need if Busslinger was the best available on our board. Reaching for a player in the first round is very dangerous. Don't forget we bid on Fletcher before we took Bus too. Our first round drafting has been fantastic over a long period so I'm prepared to back the club in here.

You need to remember that this time last season Croft was a long way off and not even certain to even be playing the sport. The decision to take Busslinger was sound then and is still sound now. I do agree that we need to regenerate our mids as soon as we can.

If Croft ends up skyrocketing into the top 10, I have no problem taking him. If we can work things around to get an extra pick in the first round that would be the preference but ultimately if we hit the next 5-10 years with a core group of talls in Naughton, English, Darcy, Marra, Busslinger and Croft then that's a bloody handy position to be in.

can we put croft on a student exchange program somewhere , so his away from other recruiters ? the more matches he plays and does well we are going to have to pay more regardless of discount.

I think this is a flawed plan. One of the best ways to get picked higher short of dominating every single game is to be play a handful of very promising games, including one where you are great, showing a clear upwards trajectory, then be unable to play any more games due to an insignificant niggle or absence. Nakia Cockatoo a great example.

A bit like when we picked up Tiller or Skipper as 17 year olds under the premise that while their results had been encouraging so far, if we let them play more games they would just keep getting better and be likely top 10 picks.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

                    Your probably right.

I reall ywished Tiller and Skipper could make it. Skipper looked like becoming that atheltic ruckman , he kicked 5 goals in a game and had that awful crash that punctured his lungs. He was never the same player

He did play a season with the Hawks after we delisted , so he clearly had the talent.

It wasn't a bad idea to take players later in the draft but a year ahead of when they would more likely be selected but I don't think we back it up with the right sort of development. We also used to spin the comments that they were players that would have gone top 20 the following year and that wasn't accurate.

                        Fox:

Western Bulldogs fans should keep an eye on father-son prospect Jordan Croft – the son of former Dogs defender Matthew Croft. An athletic 200cm key forward, Croft has kicked 11.2 from his past three Coates Talent League games, while his four-goal haul for Vic Metro against the Young Guns in early May caught the eye.

(A key forward that kicks straight!)

Calder has club-tied players galore and Croft may well be the best of the lot, which bodes well for Western Bulldogs fans. The 200cm father-son gun was down on his recent output but still managed to snare three goals from eight touches, and flew for many a mark. Croft’s athleticism was impressive as ever and his finishing proved sharp, including a 50m set shot in term one.

He did quite well down at Port Melbourne.

I didn't think he was one of the better players despite his 3 goals. The ball was so often in the forward half of Metro.

Tiller lived with me the first year . Great kid , had a few good games but I think he never got a real run of it due to ankle/injury issues. If I remember rightly he ended up at Glenelg and was running a gym .
Did play in local league in vic as well .
