Re: BT's very, very, very, very early list management thread 2019-2020
We must have a player in mind in the draft or another trade brewingDogs have rejected Adelaide offer of Keath + one of their 2nd rounders 23 or 28. We will not be trading our 1st round pick 13 according to this report

It looks like a package of 3rd rounders for the injured KeathWestern Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

"adamant it will be turned into a Bulldogs player" is weird wording isn't it?- I'm a visionary - Only here to confirm my biases -Comment

Re: BT's very, very, very, very early list management thread 2019-2020
It is stupid wording. Whether you trade it or make a draft selection with it, the outcome of pick 13 is going to be a Bulldogs player. What should I tell her? She's going to ask.Comment

Attached to the bulldogs as in 'the player the bulldogs could have taken with the perfect 20/20 hind sight that my fellow journos and I all share in common" certainly.
But the wording is too specific to be a typo or a brain fart. Whatever it is, it isn't a mistake or lazy use of language. They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.Comment

Just opens the door as far as I'm concerned.

Re: BT's very, very, very, very early list management thread 2019-2020
You heard it here first, in mid May this year!I did one of my favourite things and went through a few other clubs lists looking for a left field KPD idea that isn't on the media landscape (so no free agents, out of contract types). This is left field, so I will explain it a fair bit...
We showed Boyd could leave after one year. We showed we could get a same year contracted Schache because of home sickness. WCE tried to get Kelly after one year too. Going after a first year player isn't uncommon I guess I'm leading towards.
Last year we did a medical on Ben King, presumably if Smith went earlier. Maybe he was 'plan a or b'. King also made comments hoping to get to the Dogs. Didn't happen with King going at pick 5. Obviously, he has a twin at St Kilda and family back here he'd maybe like to get to. He hasn't played yet.
Lots of 'if's'...
If we have something like pick 5-9 this year. If Ben is homesick. If we still rate him highly. If he still wants to play with us. If we have something else, a second round pick (draft points trade two 3rds into a ok 2nd, around 30's) (help them with a high academy pick) or a fringe player they might like, they've previously pursued Jong hard (Dale?). Offer him a 3 year deal (his second year with an effective 2 year extension). Offer them up our first rounder (a high pick) and the extra bit, and see what happens from there.
It's expensive in terms of what's needed to pry him out, but the flip side there's still plenty of cap left to go after a quality free agent this year or next. But it would probably lock away our tall stocks and spine for a long time with Ugle-Hagan next year a strong possibility unless the AFEL screw us.
I'm not betting on this happening, not with my money or even anyone else's money. It's as left field as I could come up with to get a talented young KPD not on the media landscape to contrast the options either recruit free agents vs out of contracted KPDs. But I wonder if it's worth seeing if any of those 'if's' are in play as he looks to be a player. An athletic 202cm KPD would be perfect with Young & Cordy that bit smaller.
If they retain Sam Day with Thompson re-signing, there's not a blind refusal factor and I'd expect them to listen to offers, probably from St Kilda if they think of it. But if Sam Day leaves, then there's about less than zero chance King leaves under any circumstances I'd guess. If Martin or Wright leaves that could make things interesting again. But they're actually signing some so far this year which is a good sign for them.
In all, just a thought bubble or discussion point.
Not sure how, but it would be met easily. Maybe a Tom Boyd contract...Last edited by bulldogtragic; 11-10-2019, 08:07 PM.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

Intrigued by Ben Sokol. Still putting up crazy numbers as a WAFL forward, haven't seen him play though. 186cm medium forward, 23 years old. His last month reads:
Rd 17:
7 goals, 13 marks
Rd 18:
6 goals, 12 marks
Rd 19:
6 goals, 11 marks
Rd 20:
6 goals, 13 marks
Given our stated desire to 'get more mature' I wouldn't be surprised if he's the type on our radar if we miss out on our trade targets.
Bio on AFEL.com.au in his draft year:
He is the number one endurance athlete in the WA U18s squad this season. Normally plays high half-forward but can roll through the midfield due to his running capability. Strong overhead and a good lead-up target for his size. A penetrating kick on his preferred right foot, he averaged a goal per game for WA at the National Championships and kicked 28 goals in 12 WAFL Colts matches this year, captaining South Fremantle.
Apparently at the recent WA testing he performed very well in testing, specifically the yo-yo test (endurance). 23 years old. 186cm, 86kg. I wonder if he's a shot with a third round draft selection of ours. Either as the smaller pressure forward &/or a replacement in the short term next year for Dickson & maybe Gowers (impact), Greene (injuries), Cavarra (injuries).
As of Next Year's draft:
Backs: JT, Keath, Le Young, Cordy (4)
Half backs: Wood, Crozier, JJ, Suckling, La Young, Williams, Duryea, Khamis, Raak, Lynch, Vandermeer (11)
Mids: Bontempelli, Macrae, Dunkley, Lippa, Libba, Daniel, Hunter, Wallis, B. Smith, Richards McLean, West, Hayes, MacPherson, Stevens, Porter, Jong (16)
Rucks: English, Sweet (2)
Half forwards: Dale, Lloyd, Cavarra (del?), Greene (del?), Gowers (del?) (5 with Dickson retired)
Forwards: Naughton, Schache, Bruce, Ugle-Hagan (4)
When Dickson retires this year or next, and Gowers, Greene or Cavarra don't make their chance count, looking at the breakdown maybe a Sokol type might be needed as a genuine player or to cover injuries or put pressure on Dale & Lloyd for spots. I'd suggest another ruck, but that's not happening.
So Pick 13 best available, maybe Sokol/this type of player and upgrade La Young. Then one or two rookie draft picks.
There's still a matter of $700,000 in salary cap sitting there for next year if it goes unused to look at a trade (going into significant points deficit) or a free agent.
Edit: There's five possible options for a free agent. Grundy (unlikely), Heppell (unlikely), Whitfield (apparently will sign), Cameron (not for us), Zac Williams. I'd have Williams in a heartbeat, even more as a free agent.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

Surely we sign up Dicko now & take 3 picks to the draft incl upgrades.
Would there be any DFA'S we would consider ahead of him?Listening to Brahm's 3rd RacketComment

Yep. Dicko signed unless something good comes up. It might be that a fair few fringe players get cut and turn into DFAs now.
Harley Bennell's manager was spruiking today that several clubs are interested in him...?...Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment
