    Re: 2023 Draft Watch

If we don’t trade up, would love to see us using our 1st pick on Wilson. We were reportedly keen on Hollands last year, and he’s similar in some ways so can definitely see us targeting his type. Would them look to trade out the Brisbane pick with a view to trading back in after the Croft bid to pick up Lual

He was OK in the game vs WA that I was at.

I'm not sure he's much more than a late/rookie selection though...competitive, kicks it OK I guess. Was playing half-back and (I guess) he played on his man.

The game was close but the standard was poor - the venue (WACA) and time (dew time) were not really suited to high quality footy though so it was hard to say exactly what he *could* have done in better conditions.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

I have a neighbor who has something to do junior football and he recently told me that Lual has some admirers but until recently most clubs saw him more as a late pick or rookie but he did say it only needs a couple of clubs to be interested. He said we might not have the picks to match a bid for him

Thanks for the info. If he only just slides passed Pick 40, after 20% discount it’s only a fourth rounder to match the bid (he’s actually free from pick 56 onward if his admirers let him slide to that, can you get your neighbour to start some injury rumours). You’d think if we rated him highly enough, we’d do a live trade of a future pick to get the points if we had no points at all. In that event, then we will really know what the club thinks about him as a prospect if we need to live trade.

Going to interesting to see where he goes, but it sounds like some clubs are thinking he’s top 40 material as they’d have to think we’d pick him up passed 40 for bugger all. So maybe he might be off the board on this info.

Lachie Charleson kicked a lazy 8 goals for the GWV Rebels on the weekend. With 22 touches too.
            Small forward/mid.

No nation or state combine invite (yet). Might be a late draft option. We do love a smoky. Every chance we take 2-3 late picks to fill list spots post-Croft bid.

A few possible later options here (note: we did have a 2 hour meeting with Kade De La Rue a few weeks ago, projects as a wing at AFL level)

MATURE age trio Josh Chatfield, Mutaz El Nour and Bailey Van De Heuvel are among another 35 prospects to be invited to test at the AFL's state Draft Combines in October.

                  Re: 2023 Draft Watch

Charlie Edwards at Sandy Dragons seems to be getting attention. I saw him play alongside Ryley Sanders in an APS game, and even though Sanders got 40 touches, Edwards was a clear standout and created all the play. Seems like he was laying across half back for Sandy earlier in the season.

                  MIDFIELDER ON DRAFT RISE

SANDRINGHAM Dragons prospect Charlie Edwards has clubs watching him as the big-bodied midfielder makes a late dash up the draft board.

Edwards played for the Dragons at the start of the year but had limited pre-season given his strong cricket talents, however, he has taken the eye of scouts in recent weeks.

The Bendigo product is a boarder at Melbourne Grammar, where he played this season alongside top-10 chance Ryley Sanders, and has had a number of club interviews recently.

The 190cm prospect had a standout game for the Dragons against Dandenong last month, gathering 29 disposals, six tackles, six clearances and 10 inside 50s and will feature for Sandringham on Saturday in the Coates Talent League.

"He had that breakout game against Dandenong and he just controlled the ball. He can play as inside and outside midfielder and is a very good athlete," said Mark Wheeler, Sandringham's talent manager.

"He was a bit underdone at the start of the season after his cricket season but his form has been really good and he's getting interest from clubs." – Callum Twomey
"I'll give him a hug before the first bounce and then I'll run into my pack and give them orders to rip him apart."

TBH I think it depends on who is left. I'm still firmly in the 'best available' camp as the only player we won't have access to (Jed Walter) is a KPF.
So many players rated around our pick would help us - I'm guessing WCE take Curtain at pick 2 and Hawks will apparently pull the lever on Duursma at pick 3.
Obviously North go for Reid at pick 1 and there is a small chance that the AFL hand North the pick 2 compo for McKay and there's every chance they pick McKercher or trade down for O'Sullivan.

If we somehow managed to get GC's pick, that leaves us with Watson or Sanders in our range and I'd love either - and he's not as highly rated by draft watchers but I just love Darcy Wilson's game as well. I haven't seen the last few weeks of games after the champs so take anything I say with a grain of salt. More outside and might end up a full time wing at AFL level but there's a bit of
Ollie Hollands to his game and we know how good he's been for Carlton this year.

I still think that in the back end of round 2 there are contested types that would look good on our list. Kane McAuliffe from SA is dropping down the rankings but has a neat sidestep for his size, can win the contested ball and kick it in space so I think he has traits that would transfer to an AFL environment. I also think Ollie Murphy ends up as good as O'Sullivan, although he'll take longer because he's skinny but he really did show a lot of potential at the champs.

I really hope that we have Caleb Windsor in the mix for our first selection. He's a versatile winger type but capable of playing an inside or outside role and he has plenty of pace and tackles well plus he's a good kick.
He's currently not rated that highly in a lot of the phantom drafts but that could change.
Darcy Wilson is the Ollie Hollands of this years draft and has plenty of pace and a terrific endurance level. He's another that could be in the mix for us.

Sounds like the type of player we are looking for. Wings have been a big issue this year.

We interviewed Kade de la Rue who is a bona fide wingman so wings are certainly on our radar.

Wilson is a bit more versatile IMO - has played HF and has had a few CBAs as well. I like him a bit more than the more ardent draft watchers so perhaps I've just seen his better games.

This is a very good suggestion.
It's his ability to perfectly weight kicks into the forward line when given some space that is particularly impressive. Good athletic type as well.
Nice to hear we've done some work with him. He was very impressive in one of the games against WA.

Harry De Mattia probably also fits the bill for us as a speedy winger.
