    3. Kids who cannot afford to go to elite schools a reasonable standard of education , which i think is most important
I see footy becoming more and more for the private school kids , let’s face it, a lot of players aren’t exactly smart at any other areas and probably wouldn’t get in to private schools . I worry for the public school kids with talent to burn who will miss out . Eg would Doug Hawkins even get a look in nowadays he was never ever going to be a private school kid.
Lots of examples of the lesser academics making a living of footy before this private school recruiting started, I see so much talent falling into the abyss.

great point @ledge, I think your concern is valid here, on how private schools are taking the talent.

I don't know much about recruitment. I just read on how some kids get drafted.

But the stories from kids who non-private schools should be published, regardless if they make it or not. Some come to mind :
      1. Brad Ellis
      2. Ash Johnson
      3. Max Gawn
      4. Shane Mumford
      5. MacKenzie

they could provide inspiration to the public school kids.

I wonder if afl does have programs for kids with potential to be able to be able to coached who cant reach the under 18 comp teams?

there is a good reddit thread here:

good quote here : "You look at players like Oscar Brownless, there's at least 100 kids who were/are playing in country leagues with more talent than him but they'd require actual work like driving long distances, smoothing out rough edges etc. Clubs just can't be bothered putting the time in to those guys when they can grab a father son of questionable talent but who went to the right school, knows the right people, and carries himself in the right way.

You've got to be an exceptional talent to make it from outside the private school system these days."

I can't comment on Oscar brownless as have not seen him play.

It's an ongoing problem, but it does happen - we took Charlie Clarke last year. Jack Higgins quit school before year 12. Dusty was driving forklifts as a 16 year old.

Dusty driving forklifts at 16 wouldn’t that be illegal unless he was in SA . I know my work place won’t touch you in any thing mechanically driven unless your 18 and have a fork licence .

A big chance for the Allies to win the U'18's title today for the first time. They play Vic Country. Won't be easy but they will start favourites given their dominance so far in the series. Be great to see them win it.

Here is an article in the Age about the Allies

              A few Tassie boys I'm keen to see that have gone under the media spotlight;

Arie Schoenmaker - 194cm defender but also played up forward and wing

Heath Ollington - 190 cm half forward or 3rd tall

James Leake - 188cm utility, mainly 3rd tall defender but has been thrown forward to great effect

IIRC Clayton Oliver didn't even play champs and still went at pick 4.

I talked to someone who had something to do with recruiting that year and it was apparently the way he performed in the last 6 games that caught the eye of multiple teams.

Those in the know... Would you use a first rounder on him if a bid came?
Are there decent mids around our picks?

With our list profile I feel that unless he's a stand out I really don't want to burn a first rounder on him.

We wouldn’t burn a first. Our last four picks - in draft points - can secure him for the price of a first rounder (inclusive of 20% discount). We need to have our firsts ahead of the bid or traded out. We can secure him at the consensus range (Pick 19) for the mammoth price of a late second rounder and 3 x late fourth rounders. That’s a bargain for an end of first round matched bid.

I'll say yes outside the top 10 - the discount means whatever the bid on him, we're getting a bargain.
Don't forget there's live trading too so we can trade our next pick out to match the bid (points surplus) then trade back in a few picks later and potentially still gain a pick next year in the process.
