Taylor Duryea: 2023 - Depends on how he finishes the season.
    Great post Bt and GV
I pretty much agree with the above except:
    - rookie Bedendo
    - give Buku 1 year, are we developing him to be 2nd defender ?

Delist: crozier, VDM ( not convinced his a natural footballer), Keath, Hannan( his lost a spring in his step and not clean marker ) , Toby McLean(injuries and form drop)

Trade out west whilst his got any currency left

We need to keep Duryea as he is like onfield coach when playing

If we have two rookie list spots open, I don?t mind contemplating Bedendo to the RL. Not sure West has currency at this point. But the list spot and if we need some more points for Croft then I can see some merit in looking at it.

To start, I want 8 senior list changes (6 after re-balancing two spots off the rookie list and onto the main list). So that?s 8 new players including rookie upgrade/s. Six retired/delisted. Scott, Roarke & McNeil must be promoted or delisted having served their maximum time.
        From Axe Man's contract thread the following are out of contract this year;

        Josh Bruce: 2023
        Hayden Crozier: 2023
        Bailey Williams: 2023
        Laitham Vandermeer: 2023
        Lachlan McNeil: 2023 (Rookie)
        Anthony Scott: 2023 (Rookie)
        Tim O'Brien: 2023
        Jordon Sweet: 2023
        Roarke Smith: 2023 (Rookie)
        Mitch Hannan: 2023
        Dominic Bedendo: 2023
        Buku Khamis: 2023
        Robbie McComb: 2023 (Rookie)
        Cody Raak: 2023 (Rookie)
        Toby McLean: 2023
        Alex Keath: 2023

        Oskar Baker: 2023 (Rookie)
        James O?Donnell: 2023 (Rookie)

        My views are

        Keepers

Bailey Williams - deserves a decent contract. Playing well in a position of need. Will be 26 going into next season so no doubt will be looking for the best deal he can get. Hope he stays.

Anthony Scott - talk around the traps is there is a 2 year deal in the works. Seems fair enough to me. He's earnt it.

        Younger Group

These players have time on their side but have yet to consolidate

Latham Vandermeer - his injury struggles are a concern. His best position at AFL level is still to be determined. I prefer him in the back half rather than the small forward role he has mostly been played in. Not sure the club knows where his best position is. Needs to get on the paddock and find some form. He does have some tools, speed & a bit of grunt.

Lachlan McNeil - Not sold on McNeil. Another who has been shoe horned into a small forward role. Doesn't hit the scoreboard enough.

Jordan Sweet - at 25 he is still young in ruckman terms. He should be a keeper as we have limited depth in this position but does he have what it takes? He may want to explore his options anyway. If he goes we will need to join the ruck merry go round to find an experienced replacement. I would be adding another youngster in the draft anyway.

Dominic Bedendo - I like him. He was having a good preseason and a chance to be in the R1 team til he got injured. hopefully he finds his way back & plays well in the back half of the year. I'd certainly offer up a 1 year deal at least.

Buku Khamis - He should be a keeper in my view but he can't crack a senior berth. He may also want to explore his options. I'd certainly would try to hold onto him.

Cody Raak - Despite some improvement this year I'm not convinced he has done enough. Needs a big finish to the season.

James O'Donnell - has done well to earn a senior call up. Has plenty of upside to work with. Definitely worth keeping.

        Mid Career/Veterans

I think this is where most of the culling will come from

Josh Bruce - will be 32. Think his best days are behind him. Possibly retained for 1 more year as KP depth. But wouldn't be surprised if he retires or is moved on. Saving salary cap space could be enticing if we are in the player market.

Hayden Crozier - will be 30 for next season. Has made the R1 team last 2 seasons but injury/illness have held him back & struggled to get a look in since. I would retain him.

Tim O'Brien - another to hit 30 next year. Has been in/out since he joined us. Is in now but feel he needs to make the most of it to be retained. Not sold on him.

Roarke Smith - has been on the list for a long time and also been in/out a lot. I think his time is up.

Mitch Hannan - also hits 30 for next season. Looks a fair way off getting a senior call up at the moment. Can't see him being retained

Robbie McComb - 28yo and not getting a game. Don't think he gets another year.

Toby McLean - will be 28 next season and struggling after so much injury. Would like to see him finish the year strongly and get another season but might be up against it.

Alex Keath - same as Bruce. will be 32 next year and looks like his best is behind him. May get another year as insurance. Hard to see us keeping both Keath & Bruce.

Taylor Duryea - will be 33. I think we will see how he finishes the year before deciding on whether he gets another year. Has been terrific for us.

Oscar Baker - has had a solid start. Has made me a bit nervous recently. But think he has shown enough to get another year at least.

I'm happy to cut a bit deeper than we normally do. We have an ageing list and think we should look to bring in some fresh legs and strengthen list gaps. We need a ruckman (2 if Sweet goes) crumbing forward, Half forward, winger, interceptor in defence and a couple of young midfielders.

we have been linked with players like Doedee, Bergman & Lohmann. These would be great additions if we can get any of them.

That’s about 8 changes on a list that’s a lot in my eyes . Just remember it’s no good getting rid of players if you don’t get a better player in return ,some you will get better players but the rest will be extremely low draft picks or players that couldn’t make it at other clubs . Sometimes you have to hang on to players as there are no better than what you have.
I think some will be given one year deals just because there is nothing better this year.
What’s the average change to our list a year ? 5?

8 is a good starting point though and if players perform during the balance the season then they get a deal.
I suspect it will be more like 6 changes but Docs reasonings and observations are sound.

Good list Doc, although I disagree on Crozier. What does he actually offer? Not a great defender, not a rebounder, not a KPP, not a lockdown small defender.

Good clubman but needs to go.

TOB offers much more, even if he is flawed.

Crozier would be the one exception I'd look at downgrading to the rookie list.

His leadership will be required in 2024 if Keath retires and the unknown futures of Duryea and Bruce.

I'd prefer to offer Crozier a Footscray contract and a potential position as development coach, if that is something he has designs on post-footy career. His positive influence remains at the club and we get to open up a list spot without really losing any material value.

He's been a great servant and solid contributor at the club, but I'm not sure he offers much incremental growth on the list in 2024 and beyond.

                        FREE AGENT DOG IN TALKS

THE WESTERN Bulldogs have kickstarted talks with free agent Bailey Williams.
The 25-year-old is an unrestricted free agent and has attracted interest from rival clubs in recent months.
Williams is understood to be keen to remain at the Whitten Oval beyond 2023 and a deal could be finalised in the not too distant future.
The South Australian has played 114 games since being selected with pick No.48 in the 2015 AFL Draft, including the first 10 of this season.
Williams has signed four two-year contracts across his eight years in red, white and blue, most recently in April 2021, but could be rewarded with a longer, more lucrative deal.

Western Bulldogs list manager Sam Power still has plenty of contract decisions to finalise between now and the end of October, but most aren't in the Dogs' 22 at the moment.
Josh Bruce, Taylor Duryea, Alex Keath and Hayden Crozier are all north of 30 ? or turn 30 this year ? and yet to re-sign with the club.
Duryea has signed three one-year deals in a row after moving from Hawthorn on a two-year deal and could go around again, while the other three aren't currently in the team and will be fighting for a spot in the second half of the season.
                        From the AFL site.

He’s going to Adelaide at the bye. To see family, or pick an SA club…

Imagine RS mocking him up in an Crows/Port jumper…

                              Poor Aza.

Reality is I will never know if he does re-sign with us as we have no where on woof where this information is easily accessed.
