    Re: 2023 List Management Thread

Rival clubs circle English and Naughton

Western Bulldogs stars Tim English and Aaron Naughton are already drawing interest from up to eight clubs as the Dogs attempt to re-sign them 18 months ahead of their contracts expiring.

With English the long-term ruckman and Naughton the club’s centre half forward, signing the pair will go a long way to shoring up the list’s long-term future.

Both were raised in West Australia, with English a free agent in 2024 and Naughton out of contract in the same year but not yet a free agent.

The Dogs would love to secure them on long-term deals over summer but rivals will come hunting attempting to lure them out of Whitten Oval.

Their manager Andrew McDougall said on Tuesday the players would wait until the end of the season until considering new deals.

“Both boys are reasonably happy but we will wait until the end of the year until picking up discussions.”

They are the 2 words that stuck out to me. What about very happy?

I would say clever language from the manager. He wouldn't want to give the club the impression they are 100% happy and willing to re-sign for unders yesterday. He wants us on edge a little to extract maximum value for his clients. Hell he probably fed the story to the media to get us to up our offers.

It's all about the more they get the more the manager gets.

It’s not that big a deal. Jon Ralph last year said English is on up to $750,000 and Naughton on up to $850,000 a season.

Retaining them needs a generous top up, not a radical huge new premium like $300,000 or something like that.

If they want to stay, they will stay and we will still have a heap of salary cap spare.

We should try to avoid making the mistakes other clubs with their senior players like Collingwood : Grundy and Treloar . Literally they are still paying for them! With 800 K , we could be developing 2 good ruckmen. Remember we have a group of young talls coming through, hopefully they will all make it.

If Ralph figures are accurate , both players know their value vs market value and need to balance that in terms of potential in playing for a team that could make the top 4 and aim for GF ( 2021 is a pretty good indicator!)

I be really surprised if they think they are worth more and walk to another club!

They can always go to a bottom 4 club for more money but never ever every play in a GF ... there are plenty of players who have done that, its a long long list .

its a shame the footscray area does not offer any land banking deals like other clubs....(alledgely)

In short, I’m not thinking they do anything other than re-sign unless there’s a monster contract and so many high draft picks everyone would be crazy not to do it. I think the odds of that are very, very low. So let the media write what they want. But I’d bet the farm they stay.

The bottom 4 stuff is a myth. Lynch went to the Tiges, Dunks went to the Lions, Jackson went to Freo...the top sides seem to have $ to get what they want.

actually your right.. I can't think of many other examples of bottom 4 clubs, I was thinking on certain players going to clubs for the $$$

                      Nathan brown
                      Polec
                      Griffen Logue
                      Gary Ablett

Stranglely wishing plastics become a bottom 4 club when Ward went there.

Forgive me if this question has been asked and answered on this forum earlier but, if so, I've missed it?

What is the knock on Ethan Phillips that deters clubs from drafting him?

                          Interceptor not a defender.

Realistically we just have no way of entertaining an English trade without also targeting a ruckman from somewhere else
Not sure we have a choice when English holds the cards.

The bigger question on English is do we trade him end of this season and maximise our return.

Aaron Naughton is a must keep.

I know you aren't a fan of English, but there is no way he hell we should even consider trading him.

You would have to keep him until Darcy is ready to step into his old mans shoes.
