Might actually be a golden opportunity. Say the next pick of ours should be clearly a KPF. Another club wants to trade up slightly to that pick to get them. If they make us a great offer to slide back to where we can get a good mid, but something very sweet like a R2 pick. Or if we don’t trade our R2 (BRIS), getting that upgraded significantly for a pick or two downgrade.

Plus there’s still GCS potentially splitting their first (depending on where they finish).

I suspect Sam Power will have a LOT of different scenarios lined up. It should be a really fun time, if you like this kind of thing.

No I don't know for a fact, all I know is that is what recruiters always say.

However, no doubt if it is hard to split some players with later picks, and there is a choice between a few players, we would pick for needs.

I can see us going hard on Lohmann, and offering Brisbane their second round pick (which we currently hold).
Unsigned and being chased by a number of Victorian clubs. Genuine position of need. It makes sense.

It’s too early to bet… But I’d just about put large money on Lohmann to us.

Especially makes even more sense to trade it if Croft might exhaust the R2 pick.

Circa 8, 14, Lohmann (was pick 20) and Croft possible second round (but in late picks/points), cash and future picks it could be fun to be us!

            I know zilch about Lohmann.

            What is the attraction?

Live wire small forward. From Ballarat. Went Pick 20, 18 months ago. Good kid. We’ve been watching him since AusKick. Rumours his name was specifically raised by us in the Dunkley trade. Reported he isn’t close to signing at Brisbane.

Assuming Power & Bevo made a pitch to him and his manager about how we’ve always rated him and he can be playing at Ballarat with exciting young forwards… maybe that’s why he’s not re-signing while playing seconds at Brisbane behind gun small forwards.

I’d quite like him. Speed, pressure and goal sense. Nice addition to the forward line.

Absolutely - and think we're well placed with a pragmatic operator like Power to hold the whip hand in those deals.

Slightly different direction - Paddy Dow racked up another 41 in the VFL on the weekend. I rate him more highly than most, but he's a good age for our list profile, should be a cheap pick-up and would help the transition from Libba/Macrae/Treloar to the next-gen midfield (if he can make it at AFL level).

I think he has heaps of upside and would add another genuine midfielder to the list - wouldn't mind us having a chat. Think it's a bit of a Lipinski situation where he just hasn't had the midfield minutes he needs to cement a place.

Interesting suggestion. Why has he stalled under Voss?

Dow is really undersized, a limited athlete with poor skills and is just generally bland as hell. I don’t see the attraction at all.

Lipinski got midfield minutes with us... he just shit the bed when he did.

If Dow was good enough he would've cemented a spot... no thanks.

Think he's a centre-square mid who hasn't played there. I like his work in the phone box, he's a good tackler and accumulates the footy at VFL level - from what I've seen he's been shifted out to the wing or a flank where his lack of pace has been exposed and his kicking lacks hurt factor.

I can see why he's not rated but I like him as a budget option that fills a need.

Should have been more prescriptive - inside mid. Looking at some centre bounce attendance numbers - Lipinksi attended 14 total in 2020 (13 games) and 9 total in 2021 (11 games, 4 as sub) - he attended 192 in his first season at Collingwood. Think the extra responsibility has been why he's flourished.

Interestingly when Dow has played in the last few years, he has played inside mid and has attended a strong percentage of centre bounces. Might just be one of those players stuck between the levels - has never been able to replicate his ability to accumulate at the top level.

Anyway, enough derailing this thread with chat about a fringe Carlton mid

He has been ok with Collingwood, but he still wouldn't get a game with us.

When we smoked Collingwood last year Lipinski played as an inside mid and had 1 clearance for the match whilst our mids ran riot... he's a ''nice'' player and has found a role at Collingwood (well he had pre-injury, does he get back in?), but the flaws in his game (lack of hardness and pace) are still there.

I'm just not sure a slow, accumulating mid is what we need. He's unlikely to get midfield minutes in the next couple of years with the players we have and realistically we need to start investing draft picks in mids with upside to take over. Just feels like Dow's ceiling is very good VFL footballer.
