    Re: 2023 List Management Thread

Cal Twomey on Gettable says we still have an interest in Lohmann from Brisbane.

But if you listen to him & Riley Bev from around 28.50 I swear they are on speed!

        Re: 2023 List Management Thread

        How?s & Why?s:

        Simple:

        Out: Firsts x 2, later picks, F2, F3

In Draft: Pick 6 (mid), Croft (KPP), two late picks, upgrade Scott
In Trade: Lohmann (small fwd), back up defender, back up ruck

8 players in, 8 players out

        Detailed:

        - 2 x Firsts & F3 to GCS for Pick 6 and unneeded later draft points for Croft / win-win trade (promise no academy bid)
        - Secure top 10 midfielder and 200cm athletic KPP later first round
        - F2 for Lohmann. He?s uncontracted. Was Pick 21. Brisbane need points for Ashcroft next year. Lohmann tops off our forward line
        - Free Agent or 4th rounder for KPD depth (Doedee depth owing to ACL, media reports on Tomlinson) (exit Bruce, Croz, TOB, Khamis)
        - 4th or F4 for depth ruckman (to replace Sweet)

Three rookies to replace Roarke, Scott & McNeil.

        Team Balance: Talls:

KPF: Naughton, JUH, Lobb (2 years)
KPD: Jones (2 years), JOD, Buss, Gardner, Keath (1 year)
Ruck/200cm KPP: English, Darcy, Croft (who knows where Darcy & Croft play next year KPD/KPF), spare ruck

Small forward group: Cody, Clarke, Lohmann & Arty - no longer need to shove mids into the forward line. I think our forward line is set for a decade. One of Clarke & Arty nails a spot and Ballarat live wire Lohmann is the perfect rounding off.

Other backs: Ed, Dale, JJ (1-2 years), Cleary, Gallagher, VDM, depth (Doedee/Tomlinson etc)

Mids older: Bont, Jack, Libba, Adz, Daniel

Mids Younger: Smith, West, Garcia, Pick 6

Wings: Poulter, Scott, Williams if he stays, Baker

Depth: Raak, McComb ?, 3 new rookies

        Summary:

To take the next step in 2024 we will need to develop from within the core group. JUH & Naughton to kick straight, but with a fast, pressure filled smaller forward group.

The mids need to rotate more frequently and get guys like Smith and West into the game.

We need to hope (not great strategy) that JOD & Buss can play some good senior footy and the depth player we grab is a notch above TOB/Croz or Bruce.

The game plan fits the personnel.

But longer term, Lohmann and Clarke are two Pick 21 small forwards in a couple of years. Pick 6 mid and Croft is some younger top 21 talent to add to the younger KPPs in Darcy, JUH, JOD & Buss. The longer term looks good if we re-sign the players we want to re-sign.

We have no shortage of spare salary cap, so I wonder do we still look at Doedee and accept the year out and play the longer game - although reports are Adelaide think he will stay now. There?s no other real FA target this year. Do we save the money for next year and look to a cheap option to cover fringe players like a rumoured interest in Tomlinson? Cover in case our young second year KPDs need support.

(Media Sources: Reports of interest in Doedee & Tomlinson. Ralphy on trading up. Twomey on Lohmann interest)

Ideally we get the suns pick 6. But what if we can't get a pick before a Croft bid?

We simply need to. GCS Pick 6 is for sale. WCE pick from Sydney for Barass might be. Depending on where Richmond & GWS finish, I wonder if GWS might trade the Richmond pick also.

If you’re asking the worst case. We burn a first on Croft and then use the balance of our picks.

Personally, we must have been working in this for a while. It’s been obvious for months that trading up was the only real option. We have the picks to pull it off too. I think we get it done personally and am not losing any sleep over it.

So ultimately, the Dunkley trade that netted us an extra first is really going to come in handy this trade period?

BT also have to consider the scenario should we go deep in September. I don't see why we can't. Its very open this year.

                  I shall consider…

A Brisbane vs Dogs GF is still more draft points than Pick 6. So give them also Pick 36 and F3. That is 750 extra draft points and the F3.

But GCS have more picks than probable spots open. So in return if the picks 18, 19 & 36 - they hand back:

                  - Round three pick (tied to Adel)
                  - Round three pick (tied to Coll)
                  - Round four pick (tied to Adel)
                  - Round four pick (tied to StK)

Added to our points in Round 4.

GCS then hold say: Picks 18, 19, 28, 29, 36, 42 & 60 for - Draft Points: circa 4,500 enough to get all the top kids without deficit (could give them back 70 & 73 also if we thought we could spare the say 40 points and they wanted them)

Dogs hold say: (Pick 6) 45, 47, 62, 63, 66 & 70 - for - Draft Points circa 940 - Roughly Croft at Pick 13 without deficit. But with hoping some marginal points for Sweet & Khamis, or Williams if he takes up FA, we would make the bid much more easily. In Williams case, that could save us trading the F3. Or keeping Pick 35, trading the Williams compo with the firsts and using the F3 to soak up some later points to get out matched bid done.

(Also with three to four matched bids before ours soaking up mid range picks - our picks will shuffle up the order and be worth maybe 200 draft points more absolutely securing Croft at say Pick 13)

So even in Dogs vs Lions GF, I can see a trade where the dogs and suns can help each other secure their draft needs. The two firsts to me have us in pole position. Then it?s a math problem to solve, but I think it can be solved. The catch would be having enough list spots open depending on how many picks with points we think we need to use.

So the Doc fairy tale is:

                    Dogs get to GF
                    Dogs play Brisbane
                    Dogs beat Brisbane for flag
Dogs watch Dunkley cry and collect his tears in the premiership cup
                    Dogs take Lohmann from Lions
Dogs get higher pick for Dunkley than ours
Dogs after winning the flag get pick 6 from QLD rival (owing to Bris picks)
Dogs get 200cm athletic KPP for chump change in first round - likened to Daniher but will hopefully be more consistent and durable

                    Nice story Doc.

You forgot the bit where Vandermeer the player we ultimately got for Marcus Adams does a goose step on Dunkley and snaps a goal from the boundary line to put it beyond doubt!

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan will hit the jackpot on his next contract but how will the Dogs get it done when a number of other young stars are up for new deals?

                            DOGS’ SALARY CAP SQUEEZE COMING

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan will hit the jackpot on his next contract as the Western Bulldogs attempt a difficult balancing act next season.

The brilliant forward’s star is on the rise in his third season with the No.1 draft pick booting 31 goals and 33 behinds from 20 matches so far this season.

He has had only three fewer scoring shots than spearhead Aaron Naughton, who has been more accurate in front of goal, snaring 40.27 in 2023.

The breakout third season is certain to land Ugle-Hagan a significant pay rise when talks ramp up on a new deal next year.

His current contract expires next season, when Ugle-Hagan could be eyeing a deal worth in excess of $700,000 a year including the CBA increase to clubs’ salary caps.

But it may not be straightforward task for the Dogs, who are facing a massive year juggling a salary cap squeeze and new deals for Naughton, Tim English, Bailey Smith and Ugle-Hagan.

The four stars are all out of contract at the end of 2024, meaning there is strong incentive for the Bulldogs to start locking away some of them early rather than waiting on all of their signatures late next year.

A late rush for their signatures would put pressure on the club’s list management team to close the deals after losing star ballwinner and best-and-fairest winner Josh Dunkley last year.

The Bulldogs will ideally have more clarity on the out-of-contract quartet’s intentions over summer.

It is expected there will be league-wide interest in Naughton (who won’t be a free agent next year) and English (who will be a free agent next year).

Clubs with cash to spend next year include West Coast, Essendon, Hawthorn and North Melbourne, while Sydney has history of making a big splash on big names.

Collingwood and GWS Giants also have their salary caps in order after shedding big name players last year.

Captain Marcus Bontempelli is on $1 million a season as the new favourite for the Brownlow Medal. Bontempelli’s deal expires at the end of 2025 season.

The skipper is in the mix to be considered the club’s greatest-ever players as he continues his sizzling form through 2023.

Pretty lazy reporting by the Hun. Really lazy in fact.

If the players want to stay on a fair but increased salary they will all stay. And there will be enough money to spare. Hence why we were into Doedee on good money before his ACL.
