The average age of selected players by club.
No one would be surprised by Geelong being the oldest and I think Richmond being number 3 wouldn't surprise many but we also missed out on finals despite playing an older and presumably a more experienced team most weeks.
Geelong 27.4 Collingwood 27.2
Richmond 26.7
Bulldogs 26.5
Brisbane 26.1
Melbourne 26.1
Carlton 25.8
Port 25.6
GWS 25.5

Gold Coast 25.3 St Kilda 25.2
Essendon 25.2
West Coast 25.2
North 25.1
Adelaide 24.8
Fremantle 24.6
Hawthorn 24.3
We've got some work to do to bring in some younger players and start developing them into senior players.

Not a great spot to be mid range and such an old list profile compared to teams outside of the eight.
Fingers crossed we can rectify this over the next 24 months otherwise it could be a painful 3-5 years.
Yeah it'll go one of two ways. Either we effectively sort out our issues and bounce back big ala Richmond 2017. Or we we hit rock bottom for a few years.

It highlighted a couple of things about our mindset leading into the 2023 season.
1) We genuinely rated our chances to be a top 4 or at worst 5 side which is why we chased 2 very experienced players.
2) We selected older players through the year which indicates we don't have enough youngsters stepping up.
Looking for the positives the good part is we have invested games into O'Donnell and Poulter plus Marra announced his arrival as a very exciting key forward prospect and Weightman is a dangerous forward. Busslinger was able to bank games in the VFL and build up his endurance and strength and we should get a lot more from Darcy next year. Gallagher and Clarke had interrupted seasons and should be good to go next year.
We need to cut deep into this list and bring in some younger types unless we are really confident of a quick bounce.
If some don't measure up that's okay but we can't stick with marginal talent.
I see us as the land of opportunity for some younger players next year.

If we are to hit rock bottom, it better not be in the period of Tassie coming in, otherwise it could be 5-7 years of absolute heartache.
Hey BT, to save me scrolling needlessly, have you posted any trade scenario's that might enable us to trade for pick one?
If yes, I'll do some scrolling to find.
Thanks.

English or Naughton.
No other way of getting around it. We?d need to give up our firsts to get Pick 4 from GCS. I?m not thinking Pick 4 & F1 gets us pick 1, sure it doesn?t.
If Smith landed at Hawthorn for say a F1 (them an F3) and exchange of Pick 3 for Pick 10. Then maybe we could try to convince WCE that they can get Curtin with Pick 3. And get say pick 17 and a future swap maybe. But I?m not sure that?s likely either. We really need a top 5 pick like Melbourne have plus the later firsts/early seconds they have. I just don?t see, baring a good player being traded, we can offer enough.
If we want pick one we will have to do it the old fashioned way. Bottom out or have our Captain walk out!

I don't believe there have been any genuine scenario's for pick 1 and BT's focus has been on getting GC early pick and if achieved it presumably puts us into the discussion for McKercher, Watson and Curtin.
Perhaps our 2 x 1st rounders and a F1 could get us into the discussion or pick 4 and a F1.
West Coast will want Reid or Curtin and there is no guarantee Curtin would be available at 4.

If WCE thought we were bottom 6 material maybe they think about it. But pick 1 has to be worth more than 10, 17 and 10 (assuming 9th again next year). I would be filthy if we were WCE and did that trade. For us, burning three first rounders for Harley Reid when we need some depth doesn’t seem the best move for us.
If it were to happen a gun player needs to be involved somehow. I’m open to exploring that as a concept, but Pick 1 is a huge prize. When GWS were selling it off they wanted Griffen & Pick 4 (Bontempelli). If I had to bet, I’d say North is they can get Pick 3 as compo or Melbourne are best placed to get it if WCE want to deal.
Which player would we give up to get pick 1?

I am actually quite buoyed by the fact that each of our younger players have all shown improvement during the second half of the year.
Busslinger, Gallagaher, Clarke all had very interrupted pre seasons and injuries battles during the year. All three should be aiming for ten plus games in 2024.
ODonnell and Poulter were not even part of the afl pre season program and definitely should consider themselves best 22 and aiming to play 26 games in 2024.
Combined with a couple of top end kids and a diamond or two in the rough in this years draft , suddenly our younger players pushing through are not looking so bad.

The preference would always be to see early picks debut in their first season but given the delays Busslinger, Clarke and Gallagher experienced this year they'll be better placed to all be pushing for spots next year. Assuming we add a couple of ready to go midfielders at the draft this year we could see a number of players pushing to debut throughout 2024.

With the likely departure of Sweet how much of a focus should be of adding a ruck at the draft or via a trade?
Do we go for an established ruckman from another club, draft a more mature one from the state league like we did with Sweet or do we draft a younger kid?

I also think this pre season you will see new enthusiasm with not having to go to Skinners Reserve and better facilities. The change of environment by just having showers and a first class surface and gym equipment. A great environment for the younger guys and for moral as well. Less injuries too.
