The rumours about Adam Treloar heading to Queensland are not true, according to his manager Tim Hazell.

      Re: 2023 List Management Thread

Williams is having the season I expected he would have, and it's got nothing to do with the 2021 GF. He was patchy/ inconsistent before that game, and he still is today.

I'd keep him, he's a good ordinary player who'll have some really good days and some days that are, well, patchy. However, still difficult to replace due to his versatility.

I think some of us are going a bit mad/ being unreasonable over some of our re-signings. Signing the likes of Duryea and O'Brien should be for depth, and we can still improve our list with them on it - the key is to find someone better who can demand a spot in front of them this off season. Letting them go, not replacing them with someone as competent or better is the least favourable outcome.

Regarding Duryea particularly, I think people expect a lot from him in a position that used to be easier back in the day when you could scrag and belt up forward pockets/ small forwards. You can't do that anymore, it's actually really hard to keep them in check.
      TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

I'd like to see Williams go back to what he was - a defender capable of intercept marking and rebounding, who could defend OK when needed.

Has had moments as a winger but I prefer him reading the play behind the ball where you ultimately have a bit more time and the game is in front of you. I think he struggles navigating through heavy traffic with some poor decision making.

I'd like to see him in an Adelaide jumper.

RACE HEATS UP FOR PICK SALE

MELBOURNE, Sydney and the Western Bulldogs all loom as contenders for Gold Coast's prized pick No.4, which is on the trade table.

The Suns are auctioning off their top pick as it will be swallowed up by matching a bid on Academy trio Jed Walter, Ethan Read and Jake Rogers, as well as Will Graham later in the draft.

A bid for Walter could come in the first three picks, which will see the Suns trade the selection for the highest bidder.

Melbourne's hand of picks 15, 24 and 34 after their first pick (No.5, tied to Fremantle) gives it 2439 points, while the Swans currently hold picks 12, 22, 31, 41 and 50 in the first three rounds (3131 points).

The Western Bulldogs' position inside or outside the finals will likely shape their interest for the selection, with the Dogs currently holding two first-round picks (No.10 and 17) that are worth 2420 points.

If the Dogs wanted to ensure they get in a selection before a bid on father-son prospect Jordan Croft, the Suns' pick looms as an option.

Essendon and Adelaide are also expected to be in the market for the Suns' selection.

Sydney list boss Kinnear Beatson last week told Gettable that the Swans were "absolutely" interested in trading for the pick, which would guarantee access to one of the top talents in the draft pool.

"We'll look at all options and we're exploring all of them at the moment. We'll catch up with the Gold Coast boys, Kall Burns and Craig Cameron, and have a bit of a chat about what they're looking for to be able to do that," Beatson said.

"[We can] see if one, we can facilitate it or whether we need to hold those picks for trades or whatever. There's a fair bit to play out in the next month." ? Callum Twomey

                LOL.

Wouldn't the Suns be better off dealing draft capital to the clubs ahead of them as an incentive NOT to bid on Walter versus trading down to avoid having to use that pick?

He should 100% be bid on at pick #1 - but - as we witnessed with Nick Daicos, clubs don't always do what they should do from both a competitive point-of-view AND an competition integrity point of view.

The whole point about the bidding system was to short-cut this scenario where top picks were gifted to clubs - essentially, force them to pay market value for them. Too often it doesn't happen...

Just bid on Walter for goodness sake...You think North Melbourne don't need a gun key forward to play alongside Larkey? For goodness sakes...

By all accounts, quite a few recruiters rate Walter ahead of Reid.
Based on champs vision, I agree with them.

Then again, North passed over Logan McDonald and in a different year North passed on Daicos and bid on Sam Darcy so who knows what they're doing.

Genuine question - do Gold Coast need that many more draft points? On face value, they did a heap of work stockpiling works last year and seem to be fairly well placed already with 9 picks in the draft.

I wonder if they'd be thinking about shifting that first pick for a good player and something else back.

I think that the recruiters who have watched Reid and watched Walter would have Walter 1st.

Reid IS a very nice prospect but ultimately he is a strong bodied mid and I just don't know when the last one of those went from top draft pick to best player in the AFL.

Bont played half-back at the champs in his draft year and Christian Salem was probably Vic Metro's best mid that year...to be fair it might have been Jack Viney I guess? My memory is letting me down. This gun mid at 18 to AFL superstar track is a rocky one (how IS Bailey Smith going these days??) and there just aren't any guarantees it's going to turn out. I agree you can say the same for talls like Walter (I mean, Paddy McCartin that's YOUR music) but it does 'feel' like those dominant talls taken at the top of the draft - given a fair run with injury - become the sort of players you can build around.

Walter looks the goods. Bid on him. If you miss him, well...who's the 'NEXT' key forward in the draft? If you miss Reid, there are another 7-8 mids I would happily welcome into the fold.

TBH I think the bigger outlier is Clayton Oliver missing selection at the champs, then going at pick 4, now he's in the conversation of best Demons player in history.
IIRC Macrae played a lot of HF in his draft year too.

I certainly don't get the 'generational' hype around Reid (he's good and play anywhere, no doubt) when you've got McKercher whose spread from the contest was superior and Nick Watson whose kicking was a class above all of his teammates and is probably the best small forward at half of the clubs in the AFL come round 1 next year.

Then there's the way Hawthorn rate Duursma...

He's no slouch when the ball hits the ground either which these days is a non-negotiable for a KPF.
I seem to recall one passage of play he was running away from the goal and leading at the ball carrier, a scrubber of a kick comes in, he gathered and kicked is just about the same motion to score the goal. It was beautiful.

                                Re: 2023 List Management Thread

Could Melbourne make an audacious play for the No.1 pick to secure Harley Reid by securing Gold Coast?s No.4 draft selection to add to their own No.5 pick?

North Melbourne?s victory over the Suns and Fremantle?s victory over Melbourne ensured the Eagles won the wooden spoon and meant the Suns? first pick remained at No.4.

The Suns will trade out that no.4 overall pick to secure maximum points for their trio of academy picks.

Melbourne, Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs are all suitors to trade up to No.4.

The Demons not only have their own first-rounder, they have the Dockers first rounder (pick 5) and second-rounder (pick 22) courtesy of the Luke Jackson trade.

The Demons could offer their own first-rounder (currently pick 15), the Dockers second-rounder (23) and their own second-rounder (33) for the Suns for pick four.

It would arm them with picks four and five to trade to the Eagles for pick one, and give the Suns an extra 460 draft points to secure their academy players.

The Demons might ask for a later pick back from the Eagles, but it would allow West Coast two absolutely elite draft picks and the Demons could secure Reid.

North Melbourne still believes it is a chance to trade up to the No.1 pick given it has pick two and seems destined to secure pick 3 as compensation for the departing Ben McKay.

Their advantage is the Eagles would retain pick 2 and could secure the second-best kid in the land, which would allow them to secure local kid Daniel Curtin or one of midfielders Zane Duursma, Colby McKercher or small forward Nick Watson.

The Dogs could offer up their picks 9 and 17 (from the Josh Dunkley trade) for pick 4, which would be an identical amount of points as the Demons range of picks.

Adelaide has pick 10 and two second-rounders linked to Gold Coast and North Melbourne so also has an excellent hand to get up to pick 4 overall.

                                TOBY TOSS-UP

Western Bulldogs? playmaker Toby McLean faces an uncertain future at the kennel as he looks for more opportunity.

McLean, 27, is keen to stay in red, white and blue but has managed only six senior games this season on the back of a second knee reconstruction.

The premiership ballwinner has some exciting traits in the forward half but he remains without a deal for next season.

McLean was recalled for the win over Geelong on Saturday night but his hopes of a big September were extinguished when the GWS Giants upset Carlton to steal the Dogs? spot in the eight.

The goal kicker, who was a regular between 2016-2019, is eager to continue his career but it remains to be seen whether his best chance is with the Dogs.

McLean, who had 15 touches and six tackles against the Cats, is set to face a nervous few weeks as the Dogs finalise their list.

He could attract some interest from rivals but would have to pass checks on his knee after a pair of heartbreaking ACL injuries.

                                DOG CLOSES ON NEW DEAL

Bailey Williams is closing in on a deal of three or four seasons at the Western Bulldogs as he signs away his free agency status.

Williams is loyal to the club and while he is keen for some security in his contract the 25-year-old South Australian has no plans to return to his home state.

The Dogs? poor finish to the year has raised hopes from rivals that contracted stars Aaron Naughton and Tim English might consider overtures.

But the firm friends, both WA products, are certain to see out their contracts for 2024.

Neither are likely to jump on early contract extensions, and by the time the CBA goes up they could easily attract million dollar offers.

But they seem relatively happy at the Dog despite murmurings of discontent and have no plans to look around.

The Dogs are absolutely certain father-son Jordan Croft will commit to them ahead of November 20?s draft as the son of former defender Matthew.

The challenge will be attempting to secure an early pick by trading up with their two first-rounders (they have the Lions pick).

But they would love to take an elite young midfielder with an early pick before clubs bid on exciting forward Croft in the mid-teens.
