Of all the talk about intercepting defenders, I'm really not sure what Richards has to do to convince people he's that player...he IS that player.
Intercept marks stats are hard to find, but in July:

    44 - Liam Jones
    39 - Tim English
    24 - Ed Richards
    23 - Alex Keath
    19 - Taylor Duryea

Liam Jones just scrapes into the top 20. Richards doesn't.

I haven't seen much of him, where does he fit?

I?m not on board with that. If you mean we give a couple of players roles as inside or outside run-with players with the whole ?break glass in case of emergency? type mindset, great. But these players need to get into the team with this as ONE of the arrows in their quiver, not their main identify as a player.
I am suggesting that we look to draft a mid who has the capabilities to play that role as we need it. We are talking a defensively minded, unrelenting, selfless player who has the tenacity and concentration to take another player out of the game.

Who do we currently have that can play that role? It would be fantastic if we could develop someone into that, but that just hasn?t happened.

We all saw the ?21 GF (and I am guessing like me you saw it live)- I have nightmares watching that ball come straight out the front of the stoppage. Surely we would fix that straight away, right?

So here we are two years later and it?s more of the same. In the last two years only NM and WC have had more runs of 5+ goals kicked against them. Locking down players that are on fire is something we just don?t have the capacity to do.

So, yeah- if that means we go after a player whose main identity is a tagger I am down with that. I am not saying spend a prized pick on them, but we need a Finn Maginness, Ben Keays, Liam Picken type who can be moved onto a N Daicos as he starts to take the game away from us rather than watching the slow motion car wreck. Maybe it doesn?t always work- but at least we would have tried.

                  Thanks.

I just filtered for average... TOB was second!

                  AFL-wide:
                  Liam Jones 16th
                  TOB 40th
Alex Keath and Ed Richards equal 63rd

I still think it's a weakness for us and it has to be a contributing factor to us being 16th in transitioning the ball from defence into attack.

                    WESTERN BULLDOGS

                    Players that could leave

Out-of-contract ruckman Jordon Sweet has requested a trade to Port Adelaide, but will a deal get done? The Power have little in terms of draft capital after giving up their early picks in last year’s blockbuster period to secure Jason Horne-Francis and Willie Rioli. The Dogs have stated they were “keen to retain” Sweet, with a contract on the table for the “majority of the year”. Hayden Crozier is another player who could depart after falling out of favour, with the Blues showing some interest but that may be as a delisted free agent. Another player struggling for senior game time is Buku Khamis, following last’s off-season arrival of Rory Lobb, but he has opted to re-sign on a one-year deal rather than take up rival interest.

                    Players that could arrive

The Bulldogs need another defender – that was painfully obvious when Liam Jones went down with injury late in the season. Someone like Crow Tom Doedee could’ve slid straight into the starting line-up, but he picked Brisbane. Former top 10 pick Nick Coffield is also in the mix, with the 23-year-old keen to play for the Dogs next season. Brisbane’s Kai Lohmann has re-signed after being on the Dogs’ radar. They’re one of several clubs interested in Melbourne’s James Harmes. Realistically the biggest potential Bulldogs arrival could be the Suns’ Pick 4, with rival clubs believing they were the frontrunner as of last month, using picks 10 and 17 plus potentially their future first (while getting something else back). Having targeted talls with their recent first-round picks the Dogs have been linked to star Tasmanian midfielder Colby McKercher and electric Eastern Ranges small forward Nick Watson.

                    Who’s already gone

Josh Bruce (retired), Tim O’Brien (delisted), Cody Raak (delisted), Robbie McComb (delisted), Mitch Hannan (delisted)

                    Draft picks

                    10, 17, 37, 64, 67, 70

Well, it's now being speculated that we will receive 2 or more x 3rd round picks back that will be used to cover the Croft bid.
That makes a lot more sense. It would probably mean we have an improved but an outside chance of drafting Lual.

God it's still so much to pay for a kid that hasn't played a senior game.

I’ve been trying to work out how we get the points for Croft and that would make sense. I’d still much prefer a F2 as well. That’s still a very high price, but if we got our trade targets and a top 5 & top 15 kid and maybe Lual then that’s ok for this year. Just looking at this year.

Outside the box. Do we think there’s a chance Smith or English leave next year so we will still have a first rounder.

The F1 then essentially becomes Croft. Still a high price is we stink it up next year.

Coughing up a F1 is still a high price to pay.

I wonder if there's something bigger at play.

                                Dogs give: 10, 17, F1
GC give: Pick 4, x2 Third Round Picks

                                Dogs give: Bailey Smith
                                Geel give: Pick 7 + F1

I wonder if there's a way we would trade Bailey to get a F1 back? All under the assumption he's happy to go.
